WIth that and Hossa's LTIR, Chicago somehow squeezes out of their hopeless cap crunch again. Their backend is looking a bit mehhh though.

Well, that's.... interesting. I would rather see a time limit between the offsides and the goal, something like if a goal is scored after 20 or 30 seconds after the alleged offside it can't be challenged. Or the rule altogether getting axed, but at lest they did something.
According to the Puck Daddy article I just read, about 2/3 of the challenged goals are scored more than 5 seconds after zone entry, which is annoying that it will continue.

Woah, bomb's dropping. That Chicago trade is insane. Also, who plays center for the Rangers?

Yeah this makes absolutely 0 sense for Chicago.
In two years, there would have been no way to re-sign Hammer or Breadman. Saad and Murphy are signed for 4 & 5 years, respectively. It seems Chicago's decided their $10 million Captain can't produce without a $5 million + wing, while their $10 million wing should still be able to produce with less expensive talent. And the anchor of a contract they gave Seabrook left them with only two high-priced guys who could be moved -- and they moved them. That's the pessimist in me.

The optimist says Saad for Panarin is a pretty even trade -- Panarin doesn't come close to Saad defensively, so on the 'Hawks, he has added value to close the offensive gap. And he's got an extra two years on his contract, he's younger, and Chicago got their cheap back-up goalie. (Motte helps even up the value for Columbus.) It also permits Toews to again match up with the other teams best line -- without Hossa, the Hawks top line didn't match up nearly as well, and maybe deBrincat can deliver goals in the NHL. But all that makes it about 2019-2020, when Toews/Keith/Seabrook will be worse players than they are now.

The Arizona deal is a bit of a headscratcher, but I don't know much about Murphy or Dauphin. It seemed Hjalmarsson was destined to be moved, and maybe at 30, getting younger and (slightly) cheaper, for three extra years, helps. Maybe the Hawks believed he was slipping a bit, but I'm not sure how much value they got back.

Hjalmarsson has a lot of miles on him too given his style of play and the sheer amount of games he's played, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a Seidenberg-like career trajectory as he grows older where he falls off a cliff.

God what a horrific contract that is unless he magically can maintain that 23.1% shooting percentage from last year.

Andreychuk scored a shit load of goals. 640, 14th all time. All time leader in power play goals. Longevity was there, 1600+ career games.

Kariya probably falls into the Forsberg/Neely category. Awesome peak, but career shortened by injuries. He put up some ridiculous numbers during the peak clutch-n-grab era, but was on a lot of bad teams. The lasting memory of Kariya is him getting leveled by Scott Stevens in the Finals though.

I still marvel at Kariya's 92-93 season at Maine. 25 goals, 75 assists in 39 games.

You forgot the second part of that memory. "Off the floor, on the board, Paul Kariya!" Still one of my all time favorite hockey playoff moments. Also it makes me miss Gary Thorne calling hockey games.

I was a freshman at Merrimack College in 1992-93 and even though I was sick as a dog, I remember Kariya just destroying MC in their weekend series at North Andover. It was akin to watching a really skilled NHL 93 player using Gretzky against the Senators, only they were real people. I've never seen such utter dominance so close.

That whole UMaine team was a beast, but Kariya was a notch above them all.

I think I'd prefer Vanek, but if he's too pricey, Hartnell could be a good fit. It looks like he's still got something left in the tank. Torts cut Hartnell's ice time by over 3 minutes and dropped him to the 4th line this year, but Hartnell still produced at a decent clip.

Full trade includes MIN sending a 4th to BUF for a 3rd rounder.

Hate to say it but looks pretty good for the Sabres... only a $2.5-$3m savings for Minnesota once Foligno signs

Curious to see how the Shattenkirk market unfolds now. He was most linked to Tampa, Buffalo, NJ and NYR. Buffalo seems to have gone in a different direction with Beaulieu and Scandella, NYR seem intent on being frugle this year, and Shattenkirk turned down a contract from Tampa in the season.

I guess that leaves the Devils?

Today's buyouts...

Lance Bouma and Ryan Murphy (CAL)
Jussi Jokinen (FLA)
Devante Smith-Pelley and Mike Cammalleri (NJD)
Mark Stuart (WPG)

Cammalleri and Jokinen join Hartnell as intriguing options for the B's.
