Sources: John Dennis won't return to WEEI

WEEI’s MIA morning man John Dennis is scheduled to return to the airwaves Monday and his boss says he expects him back, but word from our station spies is that the longtime jock talker actually quit his gig two weeks ago because he has had it with on-air partner Kirk Minihane.

Entercom Boston boss Phil Zachary told the Trackyesterday that “Dino is happily enjoying his vacation” and that he is “scheduled to be back next week.”

But station sources say Dennis has made it clear he will not return and all that’s left to
negotiate is the terms of his departure.

“(He’s) all done
doing sports talk in Boston. Twenty years. Dino out,” said our spy.
Edit: Gayle Fee is the author; I'd put good money on Dennis being the "spy" quoted. Replace the he with I'm

I love how for a couple hours he retweets people bashing Kirk and Tanguay and the show sucks now. Then says it's a medical issue. If that's true then why spend time retweeting shit about your ex-coworkers?

Not that it matters, but one of my first real jobs was at the New Balance building. I know a lot of people didn't like him, but JD was always nice and gracious to me, and for that I'll miss him in Boston sports radio.

WEEI announces John Dennis is stepping down for health reasons.

Maybe he really is sick maybe Kirk is giving him heart failure either way he gone. The only way the show could get worse is if they announce Tanguay as his replacement. I therefore expect that is exactly what will happen.

The producers after Curtis seemed to be an improvement, I'm not sure why he's considered an upgrade but oh well.
On a weird note, when I clicked on the "I'm back" twitter link above it says that he's blocked me. Odd, since I'm a passive reader of twitter and haven't ever tweeted at him.

Callahan and Minihane featuring Archand starting in October!!!
Who's reporting that? Don't see it anywhere.

The morning shows in Bostonhave always been outliers when it comes to the prominence of their producers. Curtis and Adolfo never were entertaining on-the-air, but it's hard for a listener to know how else they contributed.

Well Adolfo did do a lot of the field work at first, although Rich did his share as well. It seems like Rich was doing a lot of the editing and production on the work, but Adolfo was generating content. But listening to other shows, it seems like their producers do the editing and production prior to and during the show. At least on the Sportshub.

Good point, when T&R first came out with the Ask a Pink Hat segment, I thought it was great radio, and Adolfo probably deserves more credit than I gave him. WEEI has far less pre-packaged bits, so the producer roles are vastly different at each show.

I don't think the producer on T&R does much of that. Rich seems to do all of it I am sure Lockhart does a lot of stuff but Rich produces most of the bits and does the montages.

However Hardy as producer does a ton since he doesn't have Rich to do it for him.

As long as the regular 3rd voice isn't Tanguay, this show will be an improvement and maybe even regularly listenable.
I just can't listen to anything with Minihane. He's the worst thing to sports / talk radio in a long time. His act is so pathetic. They could put Jesus Christ in the 3rd chair and I wouldn't tune in.

JC has some HOT TAKEZ, man. You'd love what he says about the DH, Deflategate and mooching war widows. He makes Callahan sound like Buddha.

Much like JC, Minihane is a trust fund baby. What'd JC ever earn for himself? He just lived off his father's reputation.

Edit: On another note i think it was Sean McAdam who was a guest on T&R today and started out the call with "Hey Fred, sorry to hear you're leaving the show with a fake medical condition because you hate your co-workers" Fred and Rich were dying to say something but they took the high road and just laughed and moved on.

Nice. McAdam is definitely not one to take shots. He must HATE JD.

He wouldn't be popular here. He really likes sacrificing.

Maria Stephanos interviewed John Dennis about his departure from EEI. He is sticking to he was sick of getting up early and being tired all the time, it comes across as less than believable to me.
He didn't say anything nice about Kirk but he didn't rip him either, though he will be with them next week for the Jimmy Fund telethon so maybe he didn't want to come across as (too much of) a dick to him in public before then.

I get why Dennis is denying it. It obviously is embarrassing for him to admit the real reasons. What I don't get is why The Most Honest Man in Radio Kirk Minihane is doing the same thing, pretending that it's just a coincidence that Dennis quit literally hours after EEI released a podcast wherein Kirk aired their dirty laundry and talked shit about him. Not to mention ripping him on twitter.

My only idea is that he's been told by management to lay off while Dennis is still technically employed by the station/can affect their relationship with sponsors.

The Jimmy Fund Drive is this week, which is probably why they are playing this game.

Of course WEEI is having on air auditions with Mutt, Tanguay and some other retreads. Instead of running WEEI like a business and picking someone they're doing this crap.

Mutt is milquetoast, and Tanguay should have been brought behind the barn after his spectacular flame-out as the Sports Hub's original midday pairing with Zolak. How he keeps getting gigs, when he sucks so very, very much, is one of life's great mysteries.

For as despicable as these guys can be for 363 days of the year, they do treat the Jimmy Fund days with the reverence and enthusiasm that they deserve. That doesn't make up for what happens the rest of the year. but got to give credit where credit is due and they do apply themselves in a positive and helpful way for a great cause during the telethon.

With Dennis' contribution to the Jimmy Fund Radiothon over, the rebranding of the show seems to have already begun. The show's twitter handle is now @KirkandCallahan instead of @DandCShow.

It was funny how they previously photo shopped Minihane into the picture and now have photo shopped Dennis out of the picture.

No, you see Minihane is the "liberal lefty voice" so that's where he belongs. Callahan is the "strong right-winged conservative guy" so that's where he stays.

No need to bring any of your graphic design "rules" into this argument. This is a man's station and we don't kowtow to that fairy bullshit.

Got in the car this morning. EEI was on from listening to yesterday's game. Heard Tanguay talking about having sex on an airplane. Immediately turned the radio off. I'll take a disengaged John Dennis over Tanguay. I'd even prefer Mike Adams.

It's amazing how painful this show is. It's like a car wreck. I often spend 2+ hours in the car from 6-10 so I'll turn it on during 98.5 commercials and usually I end up switching it to commercials instead of the show. The topics i heard today were:

-Does brady have a toupee
-Has he had plastic surgery? If not, will he
-Everyone hates Tanguay
-Hillary is Satan
-Trump is worth Callahan's vote
-The US will not be in existence in 8 years if Trump doesn't win.

That was a total of probably 4 minutes of listening. I get people hate T&R, but at least their show has a format. It has time slots on when "experts" will be on, planned segments, etc. The WEEI show, I don't even know what to call it is just the drunk assholes at the bar shouting for 4 hours with some commercial breaks. It's like the baseball etiquette thread. If those 2-3 were sitting in front of you, I'd just go find an open seat somewhere else at Fenway to watch the game.

I flipped over for a minute this morning, when NPR had something depressing, and 98.5's bench was unlistenable.

There was some caller arguing, I forget, some conspiracy theory of Kirk's about Brady wanting Jimmy G to do badly because of his ego or something, and the whole thing sounded staged. Like the caller would say something like "are you saying Brady wants his team to do badly when he's not playing?" And Kirk was like "YES! YES! THAT'S WHAT I'M SAYING!" and the caller is like "OH MY GOD YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING" and Kirk is like "IT'S EGO, IT'S PURE EGO" and Callahan is trying to play mediator and getting steamrolled, and it all just sounded like WWE RAW. Just, staged.

Then the next caller comes on. Thick New England accent, right out of the gate stating that everyone says Belichick is a genius, but really the Patriots are a bunch of "posers" because something something Garoppolo taking a knee, with a bunch of detailed anyalsis. Immediate feud over whether BB is a genius or the pats are frauds. Facts and figures flying. Minihane inexplicably starts yelling: "DO YOU HAVE KIDS? DO YOU HAVE KIDS, ANSWER MY QUESTION!" Caller goes silent. Everything is awkward. Then the caller, thick new England accent, knowledgeable football fan, starts in again on how the pats are posers and how can BB be a genius when such and such happened in a pre-season game...

I am pretty sure that both of these calls were staged.

Is Tanguay REALLY being considered for the permanent 3rd slot? I can't imagine a more insane business decision.

For me, there's no less interesting person in all of the media than Gary Tanguay. He is spectacularly dumb, insincere and utterly talentless. Anytime I see or hear him, in any medium, it is an automatic click to somewhere else. How do others not see this? What is the defense of hiring him? Is it because he's cheap? Is he a nice guy that management wants to give an other chance?
