Fucking Sox blow another one. Stanton going to the yanks sews up the division for the yanks for many years now. They blew it
I know, right? What the fuck is Dombrowski spending all that money on if not to build a time machine to go back and prevent Stanton from negotiating a no trade clause into his contact?

Jeter isn't driving the bus, at least as far as Stanton is concerned. Stanton is going where ever he wants to go, provided there's mutual interest. Thus far, all signs are he has no interest in coming to Boston (and it isn't likely to change), but if he suddenly decided that it was Boston or nothing, Jeter would do the deal without hesitation.

Also, what the Yankees do should have zero bearing on who the Red Sox target and/or sign. Arms races never work out for the team trying to "keep up".
Jeter is CEO, he has a lot of say. You dont erase 20 years of memories and relationships , plus there is his upcoming retirement day facing fans as the guy who gave Boston Stanton. We agree Boston is not happening regardless, so its a moot point.

Another word for trying to keep up is being competitive, and besides the necessity of improving the offense even w/o Stanton and a LHP heavy starting rotation having to face Judge, Sanchez and Stanton, then JDM or equivalent better be in the lineup or its back to 1998. WC nowhere near as attractive as it once was.

So all of that deeply sucks for Sox fans, but on topic, NY is not going after Stanton or JDM. Feel free to mock me later if they do, but they will not, they don't need to.
Not mocking you but....obviously no shocker here.

It'll be interesting to see how DD responds if Stanton to the Yankees does indeed go through. I'd really like to believe it wouldn't matter, but my fear in the possibility that he makes a "splashy" reach on Hosmer after SF goes bonkers to sign JDM just went up a notch.

Yeah, I didn't expect that his price would drop so low that NY had to consider it, it's not a perfect fit (both he and Judge have only ever played RF in the bigs) and it's not done yet, but if it does happen, the most surprising NY offseason acquisition since Teixeira.

I never listen to Kay, but this popped up while searching youtube for news stories on Stanton

Reminds me of Costanza when he said they could get Bonds and Griffey without giving up much :).

there are rumors out there the Sox were just not interested and it wasn’t that Stanton wouldn’t waive his no trade to come here.

It's not a perfect fit, but with the LT concern squared away Stanton was always the biggest potential upgrade on the table for you guys imo.

I fully expect to wake up tomorrow and start the gagging process over how light the return ends up being.

There were also stories that the Sox were engaged in discussions at least through the GM meetings in mid-November, and that they were among three teams getting that far into the process (Giants and Cardinals being the others). Supposedly they dropped out because Stanton favored the west coast and they saw themselves as the third option of the three.

Given that Stanton just said no to those two, and among all the stories in the last 48 hours naming teams he prefers there has been no mention of the Red Sox, I'm going to go ahead and assume that the Sox never had a chance no matter how much desire they have to get him.

Stanton to Boston has always been nothing more than a fan fantasy and that's all it will ever be.

Rodriguez, Giambi, Matsui, Sheffield, Damon, Ellsbury, Teixeira, McCann, Clemens, Mussina, Brown, Wetteland, Sabathia, Tanaka, & Chapman.......what else is new? This has been going on forever. One championship since 2000. The Sox will survive and so will we.

The price for JDM did not go down.

Optimistically, it’s maybe only a 2-3 upgrade over Gardner, and effectively negates some of the value of Hicks or Frazier (or Ellsbury) going forward. I wanna say it reduces their odds on Harper, but why would it?

Whatever. There’s a reason why everyone hates the rich kid.

Hope DD gets some sleep this weekend. Gonna be a long week.

I did feel an urgency to get both JDM and Abreu.....

Benintendi
Betts
JDM
Abreu
Devers
Hanley
X
Pedroia/ Lin
Vazquez

Sorry.... that lineup easily competes against the stacked Yankees lineup.

Don’t forget the Sox have their ticket bonanza next Saturday.
They usually sign someone before that, now with the Stanton news there is no doubt the Red Sox will be signing someone in the next 5-6 days

In the same vein, is it ridiculous to start to wonder if this, along with the massive popularity the Celtics and of course the Patriots have, motivate the Redsox to try to make some sort of significant splash just to keep fans as interested? A poster upthread pointed out that moves to compete with another teams moves never work out for the second team, but at some point, does this line of thinking go to the weighside and the Redsox do ahead and do something “risky and crazy”?

If JDM’s asking $200M with 3-4 teams in, I hope DD pivots toward the Tigers. I’d seriously rather spend $192M on six years of Cabrera with Castellanos and/or Fulmer thrown in than be in a bidding war for JDM around 7/$210M, or six figures on Hosmer.

Nick Castellanos is one of the only hitters available with batted ball rates comparable to JDM, Judge, and Stanton. Despite everything, Miggy’s were great last year too.

He’s not my first choice, but maybe a Sox/Yanks rivalry was Miggy’s destiny all along.

I'd be pushing hard for Yelich. Relatively expensive for the Marlins, but very reasonable for the Sox. He's got 4/$43.25 with a $15 option for 2022.

Let's do a side by side...

1. Benintendi/Gardner
2. Betts/Bird
3. JDM/Judge
4. Abreu/Stanton
5. Devers/Sanchez
6. Hanley/Gregorius
7. Bogaerts/Hicks
8. Pedroia/Headley
9. Vazquez/Torreyes

I'd say there are two spots the Red Sox are clearly better (1 and 2 in the lineup), two spots where they might be better (6 and 7) and two spots where they could be about even (5 and 8). Can it compete? Yeah, I suppose it could. Is it equal or better? Certainly not.

And this assumes the Red Sox go out and get both Martinez and Abreu which is incredibly unlikely. Looking at the rest of the rosters, the Red Sox should have a slight advantage in the rotation while the Yankees will have a significantly better pen. A third straight division crown is going to be a big uphill climb even if Dombrowski goes absolutely nuts.

I agree that a big move like JDM + Abreu is likely now. The Red Sox have dropped to third-place in fan interest behind the Pats and C's and the gap is widening. Eric Hosmer isn't moving the needle and no one wants to hear about them sticking to a budget anymore.

If Yelich is on the trade market I'd imagine the Marlins will be getting a pretty nice prospect package that will be better than what we can offer.

Stanton going the Yanks sucks and all but I really, really, really do not want the Sox to give JdM the money he's asking for.

And last I read Abreu getting traded was unlikely, did that change? Or is it wishful thinking?

Really?

This chicken little shit is going to get old.
Oh yes because Money is going to stop the Yankees from getting Harper. Most people projected they would have enough with the contracts coming off to get Harper and Machado. Probably takes the place of Manny if anything. Harper is still very much a Yankee after free agency.

I mean hell try for Harper/Machado next year and don’t load up this year. Rather do that than settle for JD.

If the Miser didn’t own the Bruins still the Sox would be in last. Everyone knows plenty of Bruins fans who would come back if Jacobs sold the team or people who just can’t afford the tickets. Sox will always be my favorite no matter what it I can see that. The ownership won 3 titles I dont think they will do anything like the 2003-2004 Red Sox to reignite the rivalry.

Where does Harper even play? I would imagine they go after SP and machado. Regardless, the Sox are definitely a distant second for al east now. We need big breakout seasons from devers and benintendi, strong seasons from JBJ and Xander, and a great season from price to be competitive.

This team can’t afford to pay 30 mil to a pitcher that is not a front line starter. If price isn’t a 1b next year, our chances are not great. If he is, we might have a shot. Maybe Porcello bounces back?

Probably just posturing by the White Sox. Unlike what Jeter did, they would actually like to try to drive the price up, not down.

Dombrowski is a "good" GM, but when the Yankees made these moves circa the 2000s, I felt like in Theo we trust. He would make moves not as splashy but close to the same significance to his team's success. Not sure Dombo will make the right move as opposed to the flashy move in response.

Buuut...contrary to Theo's era, Larry is not around to try and bully the front office into making ANY move in response. Just hope DD doesn't share Larry's past thinking, and we aren't putting out another $200 million plus contract to hamstring the team in the years to come.

Or they just bank on an extremely consistent player remaining so, wait out an already flooded market, and look more towards making that move in-season when he's likely to fetch more out of some team viewing Abreu as the best available impact bat that better solidifies their already visible playoff hopes.

As much as I believe that DD would love to push them off that stance, we simply don't have the needle pushing prospects to do it imo. Hence why were were all reaching at the Bradley swap speculation last week, which outside WAR fueled paper theory Chicago probably has little interest in to begin with.

That seems to be coming from a lens focused way too heavily on a glass half full reality that sees NY stay 100% healthy and completely avoid any offensive regression they otherwise have coming. If anything Stanton (and I'm guessing the follow up trade for another cost controlled starter) ultimately just slants the expected dogfight odds into their favor more so then it writes us off.

Although on the other hand it's also strengthening my belief that any non-JDM offseason plan should really have a better "get back under the LT next winter" exit hope/strategy built into it then simply adding another significant and non-tradeable contract on a league average 1B bat is going to leave us with.

I still like the idea of making a play on Grandal if/when LA shops him and then gambling on the upside play at 1B that doesn't marry us to anything. Digging up a more reliable offensive upgrade to Bradley in the OF that also doesn't cost a ton or marry us to anything would be more ideal as well.

Any chance we can get a guy like Anthony Swarzak to a 2 year deal as insurance on Smith's durability and Thornsburg's ability to come back from the injury? Guy had a really nice year last year between the White Sox and Brewers. 31 years old, wonder if he'd sign for 2/10?

Have RH arms coming out of the pen against the Yankees right handed mashers of the following:

Kimbrel
Swarzak
Smith/Thornburg (I have a feeling at least one of these guys is gonna hit the DL at some point next year).
Maddox
Barnes

Sign J.D. Martinez - if you trade Bradley have him play LF - if not, have him DH and spell Hanley at 1B, Benintendi in LF or Bradley in CF (With Beni moving to Cf).

Yelich is good and you want good players, sure. But I'm not sure he's what this team needs - he's basically Benintendi but more expensive (especially when you factor in the acquisition cost). He's not the slugger the Sox are after. If you want to opportunistically raid the Marlins, Ozuna or Bour might make more sense for this team.

Supposedly Jeter and his boys were asking for the moon when DD checked in (entire contract plus quality prospects) and ends up taking a decent but not great 2B man with 3 yrs control and a couple of low level prospects and eating 30 million from the Yankees. Not that Stanton showed any inclination to approve a deal to Boston

Getting another power bat or two was essential anyways. Its even more of a need. I agree 200 million for JDM is silly but if the price drops to 150-160 he should be signed

Also, IMO the rotation is too LH heavy in a division with so many great RHBers , I'd like to fix that.

Hi, my first post here and I agree that the Red Sox have dropped to third in interest.
As a sportscard collector I have to admit the Yankees will be fun to watch in that having both Stanton and Judge in the homerun race to sixty will be something to watch every season and bring up the values of both their rookie cards.

Yankees have the two homeruns kings, while Red Sox were last in homeruns.
Homeruns create interest.
I think the Red Sox have to sign JD now.

Sox wouldn’t be able to afford Yelich or Ozuna. Prospect pool is too weak. Bour however could make sense and it probably would only cost the Sox a package of Travis and a lesser prospect.

I texted my brother today that I fear Dombrowski will respond to the Stanton move by trading for Miggy. He might be the best hitter I've ever seen, and I think he'll rebound from last year in the short term, but the contract DD signed him to is insane.

Is the goal winning games or being interesting?

Edit: on Cabrera it's all a matter of the money Detroit would eat, isn't it?

Edit2: BMHH has been saying it's going to be Miggy all along.

I do think Rafael Devers will be the big homerun guy and make it interesting. He became my favorite Red Sox player last year.
Why? He hit homeruns.

I’d take Miggy if Detroit picked up most of the contract and the most they would ask in return is a lotto ticket single A prospect. I’d rather take a chance on him than sign JD to the ridiculous contract I know that DD can’t wait to put in front of him.

As I've mentioned before, I would be shocked if it is anywhere near that. That's basically the initial asking price.

Upton who was really freaking good last year is making 21 per over 5. Regardless of whether he went to the open market or not and made a bit more, teams will use that as push back to Boras.

Is Martinez really worth close to 100 million more when he can barely play the field?

Why exactly would Detroit trade Cabrera if they’re picking up most of the tab and getting nothing prospects? I would absolutely take a subsidized Miggy as long as there are no medical concerns. Not buying that he’s entered the Pujols phase of his career just yet.
