A couple West Brom players were in the box a step early on the pen, would have been even more ridiculous if review would have given him another chance.

Yeah, this is just weird, even though it's helping Liverpool.

One bright spot on an otherwise crummy day...

Mo Salah scored his 25th goal. He's only the 4th Liverpool player this century to score 25 in a season (Owen, Torres, Suarez). And it's January.

I just went through the coaching list on the off chance that, like the goalkeeper coach, there was somebody in charge of defensive work that was carrying over from previous regimes. The answer is no.

I’ve been beating up Achterberg for years and I’m sure folks are sick of it. I won’t rehash again. As disastrous as he seems to be with the goalkeepers, I’d be hard pressed on my most cynical day to link something he’s doing to the constant lapses of the back line. Karius and Mignolet aren’t telling TAA or Gomez to switch off.

What causes two different groups of defenders to have similar lapses under two management regimes? The only thing that seems to be left is coincidence.

It’s decision making, concentration, awareness, and commitment. I don’t think this team has had any type of strong, intelligent leadership in the back since Agger or, maybe more likely, Carragher. While it would be great to have a goalkeeper that truly marshaled the defense like a Buffon, those guys don’t exactly grow on trees. I get the sense VVD, for all his individual talent, is intended to fill that role. I’m hoping this was the major intent of his signing- Klopp identified a lack of second by second organizational ability with his guys that VVD brought to Southampton. The guy hasn’t been here a month yet- I’ll hope to see some progress with this over the coming weeks.

If not... Fuck these guys.

Looks like West Brom & Newcastle are in for Sturridge on loan, which seem like a much better options for him as he looks to get back in the England set up. Inter never made much sense for Sturridge - why change leagues to sit behind Icardi? Sevilla would have been interesting, but staying in the EPL always made the most sense. Here's hoping for good health and a dozen goals so that 'Pool can move him this summer (before the inevitable injury during World Cup training).

Also, while skimming the list of 2019 expiring contracts...Moreno is down to his last 18 months. Haven't heard a peep about trying to resign him, but there's got to be a reckoning soon. The others expiring after next season are all likely to be transferred or released: Sturridge, Klavan, Markovic, Bogdan, Flanagan, & Milner.

The latest has Sturridge off to West Brom .. which sounds sensible as he should get lots of playing time. I was rather hoping for Newcastle but West Brom probably doesn't require much of a re-location.

As for Moreno .. IMO he's been very good this year - with a couple of notable exceptions. But if they think Roberstson is THE GUY then they may let him go. I think its too early to be making that kind decision until we see a full year of Robertson. Personally I think the Scot has impressed enough to be considered joint favourites at this point.

Rumours have Markovic off to Swansea or Wolfsburg ., probably for a bag of balls at this point.

The long term future of the fullbacks seems quite bright - but short term is still rather a mess. TAA was awful in the FA cup game and Gomez has had several high profile gaffes of late. Clyne cant come back soon enough. But I will be surprised if they see him before March.

And Klopp has re-iterated no more incomings this window. Hell of a gamble if you ask me. If one of Salah/Firmino/Mane go down for an extended time they are pretty much toast for a top 4 finish.

What a strike by Emre Can

Lowe literally bear-hugging Salah to prevent a break, not even a sniff of a caution from the ref

Not to be lost in the Spurs Penalty Bonanza is Salah’s performance, particularly outstanding effort on the second goal. He’s at peak Suarez levels of dominance.

Disappointed not to get 3 points given the circus at the end of the match, but I’ll take 4th after this match week. Gotta hope Watford can nick points off Chelsea given the state they’re in.

Also not to be lost... Karius. He’s going to earn a lot on his penalty save, but it shouldn’t distract from the fact he played horribly. His sweeper-keeping clearances were terrible. Wanyama will get the praise for his incredible shot, but Karius weakly slapped a ball into his path. Any other keeper worth his salt comfortably catches that cross.

Can someone tell me how the ref gave two penalties to Spurs when one was offside and the other Lamela ran infront of Van Dijk who was going for the ball. Awful officiating, the EPL should look into those refs and put VAR into play because if it was Liverpool would have won and we would be neck and neck with United.

Conspiracy? Care to elaborate? They got some shit calls by shit referees. It sucks, but that's the state of EPL refereeing.

All refereeing around all the leagues are awful at the moment, its a disgrace to the game because now refs want the spotlight to be on them and not the game itself.

Moss admits he didn't see whether Lovren touched the ball, which is what the linesman was asking about to negate Kane being offside. He then (improperly) asks the 4th official if he can see anything from a TV replay. Yet, he decides to give the penalty anyways.

There's something wrong with the offside rule the way it's interpreted here. Kane shouldn't be onside if it goes off of Lovren, because the only reason he tried to play it was because Kane was behind him in an offside position. I get it if the original pass was meant for someone else, Lovren shanks it, and it goes to Kane, but in this case, the original pass was meant for an offside Kane. Expecting a defender to realize that he needs to let the ball go to get the offside call is dumb and against every instinct a player has.

Citing Lovren's shanked touch as grounds for putting Kane back onside is not a correct interpretation of the rule. He is both in an offside position and active in the play. That's it- flag up, whistle blown. If you're offside when a a shot is taken, the goalkeeper saves it but spills the rebound and you put it in, you're offside. That's the correct interpretation here.

PGMOL going out of their way to exonerate Moss is no different than when the NFL would defend absolutely inexplicable refereeing decisions on Monday morning.

From the laws of the game:

Interfering with an opponent
  • preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
  • challenging an opponent for the ball or
  • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close to them when this action impacts on an opponent or
  • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball"
Gaining an advantage by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent when it has
  • rebounded or been deflected off the goalpost, crossbar, match official or an opponent
  • been deliberately saved by any opponent

Despite the headline of Kane dismissing Van Dijk's accusation of diving, Kane admits he dove

"He (Karius) has dived, he got in the way and I'm a player, I'm not going to jump out of the way because it's football," said Kane. "I definitely felt contact and I went down."

From the Echo, Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois speaks:

"I think we all know these kind of players," Courtois told Sky Sports.

"It happens everywhere in the world, this type of striker sees the goalkeeper coming for the ball.

"I make myself as small as possible with my belly on the ground and he manufactures the contact. I'm sorry but I don't think it's a penalty.

"Yesterday (in Liverpool and Tottenham's 2-2 draw) we saw when the goalkeeper comes out and is late you make yourself small but the striker puts his foot there and it's a penalty, every time this will happen.

"He left his foot and dives, it's not a penalty.

Late to the party, but how the hell does the linesman make that call on the Lamela penalty? Or better yet, why does the ref stop play after the ball was already halfway down the pitch to run back and confer with the linesman on a call that the ref himself refused to make? I’ve just never seen a linesman deferred to on a penalty call after the fact. Bizarre.

And it happened twice in the same day. The linesman did the same thing in the early game. If it was the NFL, you'd think "Linesman calling penalty" was a point of focus.

Here's an interview with Poch. If the article is accurate, he considers diving a "minimal detail." His football mind is far beyond mine, but it seems like that minimal detail was the difference between Spurs splitting points and not.
