Oh well, that sucks but it was a good move nonetheless just to afford us some options.

I'll be interested to see if we keep him and his $6.4M cap hit next year. I can't see any way we keep both him and Allen ($5M), but we could cut ties with both.

There is no possible way they will keep either player. No dead money on the cap and cap savings of over $11 million if they get rid of both.
I think Allen is a goner but I could see them keeping Marty if they're bullish on his recovery. He is basically on a 2/13 deal, which isn't bad if he can get back to full health.

Edit: I think the Pats will also have a good amount of cap latitude next offseason now that they don't need to sign Jimmy. Miguel thinks the cap goes up to $178M and there are some obvious veteran cuts (Branch, Allen, McClellin, Gillislee, Harris) that together could save them around $19M. We could be looking at an adjusted cap number around $180M and going into the year with about 40 players signed (including Marty) for about $140-145M. They have to deal with Butler, maybe Cooks, etc so its not all roses. But if they want to keep Marty, it should be very doable.

Seems like Marty played two games on sheer emotion, maybe playing a small part in helping the offense get its mojo back. Another example of BB getting more out of a player than his peers.

Thanks Marty; hope we see you again next year!

We'll never get to enjoy healthy Gronk/Unicorn! Oh well, ring will be in the mail, Martellus.

Curious on the impact he had on Allen. Allen certainly seems to have more confidence in his game since The Unicorn returned. Interested to see if Allen takes this opportunity and runs with it now that Marty's not a threat to eat into his snaps.

Get well soon Marty. Hopefully he’s got enough strength to wave some pom poms on February 4th around 930pm.

Marty was an unexpected and almost dirty pleasure this season given his messy exit from GB and the fact that he was apparently headed to IR weeks ago. I'll miss him both for his playing ability and highly unusual personality for these Stepford Patriots. And yes, here's to his brief presence in NE this season providing a continued kick in the pants to Allen. In the nightmare scenario in particular, they might one day really need 83 to contribute.

Bennett has stated his desire to retire after this year. Which made his Green Bay to NE decision much easier to understand. This injury probably further cements him being done in the league

so he suffered a hamstring tear while playing for us? Guy just broke down finally.

hopefully Allen can be good enough as the #2 TE...

Curious... Pats owed him $420k for the delta of the season after picking him up. Do they have to pay him all of that given his injury? My nfl salary rules knowledge is a little light
