I'm sure he's hurting (most players are this time of year), but he clearly needs a break and calling up Velazquez on the night of a Fister start makes this just too much of a coincidence

DD eliminated Barnes as an option for Manager John.
Of course, because the front office regularly moves players to the DL without the knowledge of the manager or coaching staff

You don't get it. Manager John went to Barnes to start the 8th last night, when any other option he had would have been clearly better against the four RH hitters coming up.

yeah this is a phantom DL. but a well-needed one

Velazquez being able to piggyback a Fister blow-up is also valuable

Almost every time Barnes sets up, he does a back-stretch thing. I've never known if this is his routine or if he actually has back issues.

Clearly one of his routines is not throwing strikes on days he's Bad Barnes. It's almost as if you can tell from the first pitch, even if he gets lucky with outs.

Good Barnes is damn good.

Why would they phantom DL a player with options? If they option him and someone else gets injured and goes on the DL, they could bring him back sooner than 10 days.

Is this the thread to have passive aggressive beef over Farrell's bullpen usage? Just sayin' it's kinda game thready in here.

But doesn't that burn his last option? Maybe they'll need it next year if (dreaming here) Carson Smith, Tyler Thornburg, and Robbie Ross all come back strong.

No, he has 2 left, was added to 40 man Sept 2014, optioned in spring of 2015, called up about a month into the season, and been on the major league roster since.

There are a lot of shitty posters here who aren't capable of adding content but still insist on posting on the Main Board.

Like this post by me.
Since you have the grit and moxie to simply ask straight up for likes, I'm sorry that there's no "like" button or I would honor your request.

Most of his control issues lately have been wild high with the four seamer. It could be a stiff back is impeding his ability to "finish" the delivery - thus leaving the ball up.

Barnes has some nice quotes in the Globe today about just how uninjured he is. Are we sure the league is OK with this?
Probably not, but there is little there to believe they are actually going to do anything about it. I think I even recall Farrell being the league source somewhere speculating about the "in the spirit of rules" factor with the changes this past spring, which makes it even more laughable.

Not that we'd have much of a case to be outraged if they did ever though, mind you.

If it weren't so game-thready, I would totally use a smile emoji to express my appreciation of this post.
I considered a thumbs-up in lieu of like, but repented of my frivolity.

Barnes was missing high with the fastball, but he was also off line and off the plate with the curve. He really has looked awful over the last two appearances.

Game-thready or not, pretty effin' funny. Except that Bad Barnes is no joke.

Why is Barnes so terrible on the road? If a stiff back is the problem, is he struggling with hotel beds and travel, therefore his back stiffens up on the road? Does he eat poorly, drink too much, or hurt his back doing extracurricular activities?

There must be a solution for this...

Barnes leads the bullpen crew in innings pitched (60) and appearances (59). Ten days resting his backache (oooh! ow!) is fine with me.

Velazquez has pitched great all year except for his first inning in the major leagues. I wonder if he'll be given any chances to move higher on the depth chart than the Pawrucket shuttle.

This is where I am as well. I think the guy is worn out. The Home/Road split is odd, but I don't see much harm in getting him 10 days off to rest up and work on a few things on the side.
