Portland
nm - Beeks promotion already mentioned upthread.

Sharwyn may get bumped to Portland, since they still need a roster move.

Umm, why? Do you really think they would skip him over Salem all together? I can't see him going from Greenville to Portland but I can definitely see him getting promoted to Salem.

The back of your computer
Shawaryn promoted to Salem, Buttrey promoted to Pawtucket this morning. Shawaryn to start game 2 of Salem's DH.

Portland rained out, they signed an indy league pitcher to fill the open spot.

What?
Or, leave him where he is through July in the hope that a continued power surge turns him into a significant trade chip? Rather than take the chance that a rough post-promotion adjustment would reduce his value?

With Devers in the system and Mooreland a short term fix, I wouldn't be surprised to see Chavis start getting reps at some point.

Ya - he has 47 errors in 180 career games. Sucks since he has a plus arm and is fast.
I wouldn't read much into minor league error totals in the minors, especially at the A level. A lot of it is field quality. I haven't really seen many reports about his defense though.

We may be talking about Bryan Mata a lot more really soon. 6ip, 4h, 1er, 1bb/6k tonight for Greenville. 80 pitches, 53 strikes.

I believe when he signed he was 6'3 130 pounds so his fastball had some room for growth. He was throwing 89-92 with late movement last year but has 3 potential average to plus pitches. I guess he is now up to 160 pounds. A lot if it depends on how he develops. He seems like he would slot somewhere between Espinoza and Raudes. And yes, that is a huge range. Interestingly enough, Soxprospects already has him ranked 13th, higher than Raudes.

Darwinzon Hernandez pulled after 1 inning. He did have 33 pitches so maybe it's just standard affair. 1ip, 2h, 2er, 2bb, 1k. edit: Derp, he actually came off the DL and this was his first action since.

In the same game, Tyler Hill stays hot and is currently 3/4 with a double. Lorenzo Cedrola left yesterdays game after 1 bat, ending his 12 game hitting streak and is not in today's lineup. Possible injury.

Henry Owens went 4.1ip, 4h, 3er, 1bb, 2k/1bb. He somehow threw 103 pitches, 56 for strikes.

double edit: Cedrola was pulled from the game yesterday for not running out a grounder. That's why he was also benched today.

Lin with a monster game today. He is 3/3 with 2 doubles, a HR and 2 walks so far. He just tied the game in the bottom of the 8th with a 3 run blast.

Cedrola returned to action last night after sitting out the last few for disciplinary reasons. He lost his 12 game hitting streak because of the discipline, being pulled out of game after his first ab. He has a hit in 19 of his last 21 games, including the 0/1 game.

Shawaryn made his 2nd start in Salem last night too: 3.2ip, 5h, 4er, 2bb/5k.

Rusney Castillo has been hot of late and his slash line is at .282/.320/.462 for the season with 7 HRs and 9/1 SB/CS. Sam Travis went 0/3 with a walk and 2/4 with a double since returning to AAA.

Lin had another 2/4 game with a double, bringing his line to .308/.394/.483 in 138 PA with 16bb/21k and 6/1 SB/CS. He already has 12 xbh (7 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR) this year in 138 PA. Last year he had 17 (10, 5, 2 ) in 411. In 2014 and 2015, he was at 24 in 467 (22, 1, 1 ) and 25 (17, 6, 2) in 501. He had 6 career HRs coming into the year. He may match that total by July if he keeps it up. Still just 23 with the ability to play 2b/SS and the 3 OF positions, plus speed and a decent eye, it looks like he could possibly regain prospect status and have a major league career of some sort. It's also possible he just falls off the map again because 138 PA is a really small sample size compared to the rest of his career. Maybe it all clicked.

Trey Ball went 5.1ip, 6h, 2 er, 1hr, 4bb/4k yesterday.

I guess at this point they will hold off promoting Chavis and Devers until after the all star break which is about a month away.
Give them both a chance in the showcase and then promote them.

So is Chavis officially the #3 prospect in the system right now? Devers, Groom, and ...

Chavis is officially(well as official as SoxProspects is anyway) still #7 but I assume he'll bump up to at least #4 behind Travis if not #3 the next time that gets updated.
As a guess Houck would slot in right behind Chavis.

Travis > Chavis.

I'm not trying to poop on Chavis, but you really can't tell how good a hitter is until they face AA pitching. Night and day.

It's probably time to try Henry Owens as a MR and see if his mechanics hold up better over an inning instead of 5. He doesn't offer much value as a starter if he can't even make it through 5 on 100 pitches. He has 4 games this season where he made it less than 5 with over 100 pitches thrown, including his last 2 and 3 of his last 5 (excluding his 06/02 start).

On 4/20, he went 4.2ip, 4h, 2er, 4bb/8k on 107 pitches, 64 for strikes.
On 5/16, he went 4.2ip, 6h, 5er, 7bb/5k on 104 pitches, 54 for strikes.
On 6/02, he went 0.2ip, 6h, 6er, 2bb/1k on 40 pitches, 28 for strikes.
On 6/07, he went 4.1ip, 2h, 1er, 3bb/3k on 103 pitches, 56 for strikes.
On 6/14, he went 4.2ip, 4h, 1er, 8bb/2k on 110 pitches, 54 for strikes.

Over his last 3 starts, thats 9.2ip of work on 253 pitches. That is an efficient 26.2 pitches per inning. Yeesh.

I think he may even be successful as a MR. He doesn't give up very many hits and can still strike guys out. It's a matter of limiting the free passes. Maybe his control will improve in small bursts. He doesn't turn 25 until July and he has that "tall left handers take forever to figure it out" myth going for him but this is his 4th year in Pawtucket and he's actually regressed.

Not to familiar with Hildemaro Requena even though he's been in the system since 2013. He doesn't turn 20 until July but is currently at 17 games, 36.1ip, 39k/10bb and a .99 WHIP in Greenville. Hitters are slashing .210/.288/.306 off him. Last year, he struck out 52 and walked 6 in 65 innings. The year before, he had 35ks/11bb in 52.2. Scouting reports are limited on him but it looks like he had advanced control for his age and that his fastball sat around 90. It looks like a really dated scouting report though and given his age, who knows.

Devers is currently 2/2 with a 2b, his 11th HR and a BB. Lin is 1/2 with a 2b and a walk. I want to start taking him seriously. His batted ball profile is completely different.

edit: Those 11 HRs tie his career high. He hit 11 in both 2015 and 2016. In 2015, it took him 508 PA, 2016 546. In 2017, it took him 231... as a 20 year old in AA. It was also his first HR vs a lefty since like August of 2015.

For Devers, his rate of doubles is about the same as in Salem and Greenville, but his HR/FB rate has just about doubled. His in-game power has arrived.

Beeks with another solid outing in AAA. 6.2ip, 5h, 2er, 1bb/4k 1HRA

Rusney Castillo went 3/4 with 2 HRs and a double. That gives him 17 doubles and 9 HRs for the year. He is now OPSing north of .800.

Anyone have a feel for who we should be watching on the DSL team? Rayniel Moreno is an 18 year old left handed pitcher who is off to a good start.
They went with only 1 team this year instead of 2 because of their signing restrictions the last 2 years. I tend not to pay too much attention to the DSL but this year the team is especially terrible. It's made up mostly guys in their 2nd or 3rd seasons and somewhat old for the league.

With that said, Rafael Rincones is still just 17 and had a solid season as a 16 year old last year. Reinaldo Ugueto is oldish but may be worth keeping an eye on. Neither one of them really instill much confidence though. The pitching side isn't much better.

Honestly, there isn't anyone you should be watching. Maybe someone will emerge, though.
