He's 28 and in AA so not a prospect by any means, but Jeremy Barfield is hitting .376/.409/.806 in his last 107 PA. 25 games, 12 HRs. In his last 13 games, he has a ridiculous 9 HRs in 56 PA.

Ockimey over his last 15 games and 66PA: .309/.409/.509 with 10bb/20k.

Lorenzo Cedrola has been hitting for a little more power lately, hopefully a sign of things to come and not SSS. Over his last 19 games and 80 PA: .316/.350/.461 with 5 doubles and 2 HRs. 0bb/9k though.

Cole Brannen is off to a mixed start, hitting .290/.457/.290 in his first 82 PA. The no extra base hits is alarming but he also has 17bb/13k, probably not getting much to swing at.

I wish they would just convert Ball to the outfield. His hitting looked as good or better than his pitching.
You know why they don't? Here's the list of lefties averaging over 92 mph with more than 100 IP this year:

James Paxton (95.7)
Chris Sale (94.6)
Robbie Ray (94.1)
Martin Perez (93.6)
Clayton Kershaw (92.9)
Danny Duffy (92.9)
Patrick Corbin (92.5)
Kyle Freeland (92.2)
Ariel Miranda (92.1)

That's it. If you want to drop it some, here's the next best:

Matt Moore (92.0)
Sean Manaea (92.0)
Jose Quintana (92.0)
Jordan Montgomery (92.0)
Wade Miley (91.6)
Drew Pomeranz (91.5)
Jon Lester (91.4)
Derrick Holland (91.3)
Jamie Garcia (90.9)

Doing a quick check, for others with fewer than 105 IP, there are Daniel Norris of the Tigers is (93.3 in 85 innings); EdRod (93.3 in 75.2 IP); Adalberto Mejia (92.6 in 79.2 IP); J.A. Happ (92.6 in 78 IP); Mike Montgomery (92.5 in 83.1 IP); Francisco Liriano (92.5 in 82.2 IP); Matt Boyd (92.1 in 74.2 IP); and Cole Hamels (91.9 in 70.1 IP).

Trey Ball has thrown approximately 463 innings in the minors and Airzona Fall League. Plus he's a 6'6" lefty who had to remake his body completely. He touches 94. Do you really think the Red Sox are going to do anything but let him throw as many pitches as possible to figure out whether a light can come on?

Sure it would have been nice if Ball has unlocked his potential by now but I think it was unrealistic to think of someone who had thrown (if I recall correctly) like 90 innings in high school to do anything but what he has done.

Mata and Shawaryn tonight on a light schedule.

Also noticed Williams Jerez has been pretty good lately. Last 14 games, 23.0 ip, 17h, 2er, 5bb/25k. 0.78 era, .205/.258/.229. Season to date, he has a 3.16 ERA in 51.1ip with 47k/17bb. That includes a 1.1ip, 7h, 8er performance. Take that one performance out and he has an era of 1.80 over 50 innings this year.

Don't know if Shawaryn got scratched or they just gave us bad info, but he isn't pitching tonight.

Mata thru 3ip, 2h, 0bb/7k. Finished with 3.2ip, 5h, 4er, 2bb/7k and a hbp. Still responsible for 2 runners. Hopefully he just fell apart and it's not something more ominous.

Portland
Per Chris Hatfield - Ockimey to Portland.

"Wow. Didn't see this coming. Ockimey to Portland. Looked in June like he was headed for another 2nd half swoon, but recovered in July some."

Does this mean Chavis to AAA soon? The other thread had him starting to learn first base. Odd to promote Ockimey if they keep Chavis in Portland.

Just noticed Williams Jerez was promoted to Pawtucket and pitched yesterday. Good chance we see him in Boston at some point next year.

Jake Cosart continues to pitch well, pitching 2 clean innings with 3k last night. Last 9 games: 13.2ip, 8h, 1er, 4bb/17k.

Groome with a gem. 6ip, 1h, 1bb/8k. 91 pitches, 61 strikes. Bobby Dalbec hits HR #7. If nothing else, he's hitting a lot of HRs lately.

Castillo extends his hitting streak to 12 games and hits HR #12 in the process. 2/3 so far tonight.

Groome's game does a lot to make you forget his ERA is 7.90. That type of domination suggests that the stuff really is as special as the hype.

And you have to hand it to Castillo this year. He could have sulked and collected his money. But he went out there and made himself a better ball player. Lately, even the BB are picking up a little. But for his contract, there has to be some team that would give him a shot. I wonder if there's any escape from his purgatory.

Brentz really should be a September call up. How do they get him back on the 40 man?

Overall Castillo has a 3.1% walk rate this year. He's not the extreme groundball hitter he was at the beginning, so his average and power have improved a lot, but I have doubts about his overall approach translating if he can't draw walks at all.

Chavis just hit another home run. So, to tally it up, he is a 21 year old former first round pick who now leads the minors in home runs at AA, where he is nearly 3 years younger than the rest of the league.

My point is that I'm starting to feel he is vastly underrated on most listings.

Agreed, If he has even a decent finish to the year, he's got to be a top 50 guy at the end of the season. Looking at his numbers over his 3+ years (including 2016 being a dud of a short year for him), the Ks and BBs are going in the right direction, even as he's moved from Greenville to Salem to Portland. Assuming Devers is the Sox 2018 third baseman, they may be looking at finding Chavis a new or another position next year in AAA.

He's extremely underrated. He's a top 25-50 prospect and will probably be rated in the 70-100 range. And does he have the most HR in the minors combined? It's disingenuous to say he leads AA in HRs.

Just a wording thing. He leads combined. My point was that he's currently in AA and just not that far from the bigs.

I think that's about accurate. Willie Calhoun is another bat first guy without a real position (5'9'' too) and he was ranked 75th from Baseball America at the mid point. He has slashed .298/.357/.574 in AAA but is a year older.

Bobby Poyner's stats with Portland are insane. What do we have there?
Sox Prospects did a Scouting Scratch article on him a few days ago. He has little pedigree having been drafted after his senior year in the 14th round, so he's fighting an uphill battle to prove that he's legit. Sounds like none of his pitches really overwhelm hitters, but throws a lot of strikes with a deceptive delivery that results in an overall effective package.

25th HR for Brentz tonight, would be nice if there is a way to get him another look. he's not on 40 man roster, but I'd imagine Selsky could be DFAd if need be (sorry Selsky)
