Ellsbury has a new hip issue and will be shut down for a few days, so much for getting him back Thursday.

Aaron Hicks, on the other hand, is hitting off a tee and throwing today. He no longer feels pain and is seemingly a good shot to be back Monday when he is eligible.

Meanwhile, the reason NY signed Oliver Perez and traded (back) for Daniel Camarena in recent days is because both Heller and Gallegos (on the 40 man, not on the 25 man) are hurt currently, so they needed to add some healthy options in AAA if needed.

Bryan Hoch: "Clint Frazier is “hopefully very close” to getting into games, Aaron Boone said. He’s been running the bases and tracking pitches."

Didn't the Yankees just claim Klay Thompson's brother Trayce off waivers? If he's not outfield help, maybe he can join Stanton and Judge on the Yankees' Winter basketball team.

The Drury one is concerning, migraines and vision problems and they have no idea why, but at least Andujar is getting the chance we all hoped he would.

Ben Heller had Tommy John surgery, obviously out for the season.

Injured Yankees first baseman Greg Bird will have the stitches taken out tomorrow from the right ankle surgery he had a couple weeks ago. The rehab process will begin. He's still targeting a return by sometime in May, although that timeline also depends on how long he'll play in a rehab assignment. Dr. Martin O'Malley, who performed the procedure to remove a bone spur, told Bird to remember: "You have a great ankle."

Gallegos just came into relief in the AAA game, so I guess he's not hurt anymore.

Gallegos is back on the AAA DL, Acevedo too with a blister (AA in his case, but both are 40 man options not available currently).

Ellsbury has his third injury of the year already, now dealing with plantar fasciitis too.

In better news, Greg Bird was on the field playing catch today, and Drury is maybe on the mend.

"Yankees 3B Brandon Drury says he's not scared of what's going on the migraine/blurred vision issue he's had. He's "excited" to finally know what's been going on. The many tests he went through on his brain and body have him energized thinking the issue may finally get fixed. When he's walked to the plate the past few years he's experienced the blurred vision "all the time." He's currently on anti-inflammatories as the results from his tests keep tricking in. He'll take some BP and a few ground balls today for the first time since going on the DL."

Did they insure Ellsbury's contract? Sure seems like his body is preventing him from working anymore.

"Aaron Boone says injured Yankees 1B Greg Bird (foot/ankle) is doing well with his rehab. The Yankees still don’t know exactly when Bird will be back, but they are optimistic his return will be “on the shorter side” of his 6-8-week scheduled recovery."

It's been three weeks already, so maybe the second week in May? That would be quite welcome.

CC is back tomorrow, but right now NY has 13 guys on their 40 man roster hurt (12 after CC is activated).

Thairo Estrada (on the 40 man) activated for the first time this year after being shot in the thigh while being robbed this offseason. He will start at Tampa, maybe he'll go to AAA once Torres is called up.

So now NY is 'down' to 11 of their 40 man roster on the DL.

How many of the 11 parked, I mean recuperating on the DL are guys who would be starting for the big club?
The two most important are Drury at 2b and Greg Bird at 1b. But we just got Hicks back and Kahnle, who has struggled, just got on. So, one of our prime setup guys and two pretty impactful bats have been shelved.

This is the full list:

Albert Abreu
Domingo Acevedo
Gio Gallegos
Ben Heller (60)
Tommy Kahnle
CC Sabathia
Greg Bird
Brandon Drury
Thairo Estrada
Clint Frazier
Jacoby Ellsbury
Billy McKinney

CC will be back tomorrow and only missed maybe one start. Bird and Drury would be starting, Kahnle is also certainly on the team when healthy. Abreu, Acevedo, and Estrada aren't big league options, the others are all possible but not definite, I guess.

The bigger deal is that with so many of the 40 man hurt, you need to put new guys on the 40 man and maybe lose better players. That hasn't quite been an issue yet, but they're close to that now. I wonder how far they could backdate Ellsbury if they put him on the 60 day DL, could it go back to early spring training or does it start at Opening Day?

Ellsbury 60-day clock would start from the same day as his 10-day clock started. So, from my quick google-fu... March 26.

Guys are slowly coming back, Acevedo's blister is better and he should start again in AA soon, and Abreu also should hopefully debut soon. More relevantly for the big club:

Bryan Hoch‏Verified account @BryanHoch

Clint Frazier is working out “full bore” with the Tampa Tarpons, according to Aaron Boone. At-bats in actual games could happen very soon.

Brandon Drury will begin a rehab assignment with AAA on Wednesday, Clint Frazier with high A Tampa on Thursday.

Sounds like Drury should be ready to come back this weekend if all goes well:

DJ Eberle‏ @ByDJEberle

Brandon Drury is scheduled to play seven innings at third tomorrow, then have the off day Thursday and travel with the team to Lehigh and play a full nine on Friday. Bobby Mitchell said he doesn’t expect him to stay with the team after that. #Yankees

Montgomery has a flexor strain, they are saying they expect him back in 6-8 weeks. Come on down, Domingo German.

Tommy Kahnle is throwing off a mound today for the first time since going out, yay.

And Greg Bird has played intrasquad games in Tampa the last few days, hitting a booming homer yesterday (no video). Soon he will go to Scranton or Tampa for rehab games, they've said they'd like him to play 10-14 days in the minors before bringing him back.

Adam Warren threw three scoreless innings in AA today, 3 1 0 0 0 3, 41 pitches. He told a beat reporter he is coming back this weekend in BAL, presumably on Saturday after 41 pitches tonight.

Ew. I don't think he's anything special, but innings are innings.

German needs to keep pitching well or that trade will be happening sooner than later (it probably will eventually either way).

German definitely has more long-term potential upside than Montgomery IMO, so this might not be the worst thing in the bigger picture. It probably raises the chances Sabathia is back next season also, but long way until then.

He's said that if they win it all, he's retiring, so I guess I hope he's not back?

But then he said he wants to pitch in the London series against Boston next year.

Oh I didn't see that. Interesting. That also implies that he's virtually guaranteed to re-sign if he keeps playing, which I guess isn't surprising at all but nice to know.

Gleyber onto the DL with a right hip strain, it seems like they're just trying to be safe but this will make the upcoming 11 games in 10 days road trip even tougher.

Lots of options to fill in for Gleyber, Walker and Drury can platoon at 2B and Tyler Wade can come back up since he has a .835 OPS in AAA since June 1 and seems to be fully recovered from his early season flu (he lost 15 pounds supposedly). Clint Frazier needs to come back too, you don't really need a 13 man pitching staff.
