Chance Adams had a no-hitter through five against Pawtucket, loses it on a leadoff double in the sixth.

I haven't heard reports yet on Andujar's defense in AAA, but if he plays well there and continues to hit (.967 OPS in his first 4 games), he will vault the injured Torres (who I think is better suited for 2B or SS anyway) and Wade to be NY's best minor league option at 3B, especially since he is already on the 40 man.

The Castro injury tonight pushes Tyler Wade to the bigs, Abiatal Avelino to AAA, and Jorge Mateo an undeserved promotion to AA, but maybe it'll spark him.

Jorge Mateo has maybe woken up a bit after his unwarranted promotion to AA (promoted because of injuries higher up, not his meh performance). He has been on base nine times in his first three games (and tonight's not over yet), 4-9 with 5 walks.

Last night's injury to Fowler seems preventable:
Girardi blamed what he described as an electrical box that was at the top of the short wall for the severity of the injury.

"I'm not blaming the White Sox, but it is something that needs to be inspected," Girardi said. "It should've been padded or not put there or put lower because if the kid doesn't hit the electrical box, he might still be hurt but my guess is he doesn't rupture his patellar tendon."

Girardi also said MLB needs to figure out a better plan than having the short walls in foul territory in the outfield. He said plexiglass, like in hockey, should be considered.

I wonder why the box couldn't go on the other side of the wall?

Billy McKinney up to AAA and Tito Polo up to AA, both talented outfielders on the border of 40 man protection this winter.

NY lost a top prospect for the year in Fowler but they may have regained one in Mateo, who is killing it since being promoted to AA, 2-2 with a bases loaded triple so far tonight.

FWIW, the White Sox said they don't think he actually hit the box after looking at a bunch of replays. I just think he was running way way way too fast, geeked up for his first inning in the bigs after a three hour rain delay and more used to playing CF (although he has played RF, 14 games there this year).

He finished 4-4, 8-14 with 5 walks in 4 games in AA now.

Not as many exciting position players to watch in the minors with Frazier and Fowler and Wade promoted or injured, but a bunch of pitchers still, Adams and Acevedo and Tate all start today.

Brilliant performance by Tate, who will go shooting up prospect lists back into the top 100 if he keeps this up, 7 6 0 0 0 11 on just 88 pitches, 1.47 ERA now in 3 starts.

It seems to me like the bargain international signings pay off as often as the high profile ones, hard to really differentiate kids when they're 16. Happy to keep filling the pipeline though...

Well, it seems as if the Yankees went hard after high-end pitching talent in the amateur draft (I think the first 9 out of 10 picks were pitchers). With the strategy that they were going to load up on offense internationally.

Right, but my point is that guys like Severino and Mateo weren't highly touted initially, each got around $200K to sign. I have zero proof to back this up, but it feels like the cheaper, less touted international signings work out well just as often as the guys who are ranked in the top 25, Domingo Acevedo signed for $7500 when he was 18.

This isn't to say that NY shouldn't keep going after the highly ranked guys, it's just to say that it's hard for me to get excited until they actually show signs of talent in the minors.

Mateo and Polo running wild in today's doubleheader, game 2 is still going on, but between them today they are 10-17 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HRs, and 3 SBs, so they've combined to hit for the cycle twice in 12 total innings.

He's only played 2B and SS in AA so far (4 games), but with the Fowler injury, all of a sudden there is a possible opening for long-term CF, where he played 22 games in high A earlier this year.

I should have been more clear. I was thinking more of using him as trade bait.
But NY needs a CF, they are honestly covered long-term at almost every position if guys work out and that makes more sense than trading for short-term fixes while giving up guys who may be part of the long-term future. They do need a 1B if Bird isn't the answer, but they have plenty of pitching in the pipeline plus Tanaka's status is unclear (if he doesn't opt out, they have three rotation spots filled for 2018, and if he does, they only have two). If you want external pitching, Darvish in free agency seems to me like the best answer.

So if they want to make deals like last year, moving Gamel and Pazos and Goody to free up 40 man space, that makes total sense to me. If they can put together a package deal for someone like Felipe Rivero or another dominant young lefty reliever under team control for a while, that makes sense, but good luck prying him away from Pittsburgh.

Basically I think NY should only be trading for two kinds of players, guys under team control for a long time who can fit into an area of need (1B, lefty relief) immediately or guys who don't need to be protected on the 40 man next winter. It won't be easy getting guys who fit the first description and Mateo is too talented to move in the latter kind of deal.

TL/DR: I'm glad I'm not Cashman who is going to have some challenging decisions this month.

I just want to say thanks to especially Abbey, Wingack & Terry and those who are frequent posters here on the Yankee side of SOSH. I would love to post more but between Abbey, Wingack & Terry you guys say what I'm thinking 95% of the time. Its silly to just post "agreed" or "what he said". I hope you realize that you're not just talking to yourselves and i'm sure there are plenty of Lurkers who also appreciate what you do here. I know i check this board every day and am a better Yankee fan for it. You have my thanks and appreciation.

Thanks for the nice words, but it would be great to read more people's perspectives too, even just in the game threads, so I hope you can post some in the future.

Justus Sheffield left last night's game with an oblique strain, quote from the AA manager: "The MRI showed it's an oblique strain & not a minor one at that. We're going to be careful w/ him. He'll be out a while."

Billy McKinney with three more hits tonight, a 1.319 OPS through 27 AAA ABs. He turns 23 next month so still very young, a former #1 pick (2013) and a top 100 pick as recently as spring 2016 (#74 in BP).

Interesting to look at last July's BA list (http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/midseason-top-100-prospects/#EWCEyz8ltHc4LqD0.97), NY had four prospects on that list, none of whom is still there. Judge and Sanchez graduated, Kaprielian got hurt again and Mateo wasn't good until a week or so ago.

They of course traded for Torres, Frazier and Sheffield, Rutherford was a 2016 draftee and Adams, Florial and Fowler have worked their way up, NY continues to have great depth in the system. Andujar, Mateo, Tate, Acevedo, McKinney and Littell all can put themselves into serious consideration for offseason top 100 lists with a strong finish, plus Kaprielian if he ever gets healthy.

Not sure why Kap's injury should knock him off the list.
He has barely pitched two years in a row now, he wouldn't be in my top 10 NY prospect list either until he gets back and shows he has the same stuff. Fowler is a question mark too, Torres' injury seems like a more definite full recovery.

Mateo still crushing since his promotion to AA, .404/.507/.737 and up to 34 SBs in 42 attempts for the season (high A and AA combined on the SBs).

Scranton knocks the still underperforming Lucas Giolito out wtih a five run second inning, led by Tyler Wade's bases loaded triple.

Also Dillon Tate with another strong outing in high A, he is 5-0 with a 2.92 ERA in six starts, 7 4 2 2 4 3 tonight. I wonder if he'll get bumped to AA soon.

Terry's boy Cito Culver with his 9th HR of the year tonight (221 ABs). He has a .764 OPS in AAA, is reportedly a good defensive SS, and is still only 24, he may have a big league career after all.
