NYY Trade Deadline Thread

For the first time in quite awhile, the Yankees are in the position to be big time sellers at the trade deadline. Miller, Chapman and Betances will be in high demand and apparently already are. MLB.com is speculating that the Cubs could want Miller and Chapman in the same deal. I suspect that everyone is on the table and players like Beltran, Eovaldi and McCann could also draw serious interest.

If the Yankees play their cards right, they could rebuild this team quickly. If I were Cashman the first two teams I would be looking to deal away the bullpen aces to would be the Cubs to see if I can pry away either Schwarber or Baez and the Rangers to see if they could grab Gallo.

Anyway, as this team continues to lose (as I suspect they will) there should be lots of rumors to track until deadline day. And the time is finally right for the Yankees to sell, sell, sell.

Everyone seems to know this except Yankee management, I hope they give Cashman the go-ahead by the All-Star break, if not before. The exciting thing to me is that most of the genuine contenders could really use Chapman or Miller or both, so we have the makings of a nice bidding war, since if a team loses out, they could easily face the double whammy of one of the other top contenders landing one or both.

Not sure how good a match they are with the Cubs, Schwarber is a DH masquerading as a LF, and where would Baez would be a long-term solution for NY? Gallo would be a good get, maybe Headley could move to 1B until Bird is ready.

Many/most/all of these guys are question marks, but this is their general set of building blocks going forward:

C: Sanchez
1B: Bird
2B: Castro (still 26 and signed through 2019)
SS: Didi (also 26 and signed through 2019)
3B:
LF:
CF: Rutherford (even more of a projection than these other guys, he's not even signed yet)
RF: Judge
DH:

SP: Severino, Kaprielian
RP: Betances (under contract through 2019)

Other top 10 prospects who may factor in: Mateo (SS/2B), Dustin Fowler (CF), Miguel Andujar (3B). All three are 21 (Mateo turns 21 next week) and doing very well at high A or AA.

So assuming they're targeting prospects who are ready or close to ready, they should be focusing on outfielders, a 3B and of course starting pitching, always starting pitching.

Well, Baez has played the majority of his games at 3B this season. I know Gallo has said that he prefers to play 3B. But if they could do a Chapman for Baez and a Miller for Gallo deal (with various other pieces included but those would be the centerpieces), Baez could play 3B and Gallo could play LF. Or you could flip them, Baez has played some OF this year too.

I'd look at trading Betances as well. He's pitched the most innings of any reliever in baseball over the past couple of years. It wouldn't surprise me if he continues to decline.
Totally agree, and they could probably get alot for him given his price tag. I am fully in fleecing teams by sending them relievers for high-end every day players.

I would think the Nationals and Cubs could create a healthy bidding war themselves. Looking at last night's game both teams blew ninth inning leads.

Oh yeah, absolutely no doubt that the Nats will be interested in those bullpen guys in the Yankees make them available. The bullpen was an issue last year due to youth and inconsistency at the back end, and Papelbon and his 90 MPH fastball ain't the answer this year, I think they have seen enough evidence of that now. They have some nice set up pieces, but nothing like what the Yankees could offer, and going into the postseason against other teams with great starting pitching (Mets, Giants & Cubs) you are going to need to hold the other teams from scoring alot, hence the need to upgrade the bullpen.

May be a tricky match, as beyond Turner and Robles most of the top rated Nats prospects are pitchers, some quite young (21 to 23)...

This is what I was talking about in my first post above, from Jon Heyman's column today. Everyone seems to know NY should be moving whatever veterans they can except NY's decision-makers:

"For all the speculation about Yankees trades, the Yankees intend to wait until late July before deciding whether to pull the trigger. “We’re three (now four) games out of the wild card!” practically screamed a Yankees person the other day."

I'm sure the Nats (and other interested suitors) will be more than happy to wait until nearer the trade deadline, as that will lower the cost somewhat...

Their next 8 games are against the Twins & Rockies, so if they move a few games above .500 as a result that won't help move the team execs to the conclusion that they should deal the bullpen depth sooner rather than later. However the schedule gets much harder post ASG, so who knows...

I would be shocked if the Yankees sold before the waiver deadline? And why would you trade Miller? He's probably on one of the best FA contracts in baseball and I doubt the Yankees feel like they will also be uncompetitive in 2017-2018. That's crazy talk for a team with their resources.

I'd think it just as likely that the Yankees win the division as finish 4th. With Sabathia and Tanaka rolling, and Pineda looking like he's coming around I could see them easily winning 60% of their games over the next month.

I agree. The MFY are back to .500 after an execrable start to the season and are only 5.5 games behind the Orioles, plus 4 of their next 5 series are against teams with losing records. If they stumble during that stretch, and one of the top 3 teams catches fire, such that the MFY find themselves 10+ games back heading into a tough mid-July stretch, then yeah, they might be sellers, but until then, this discussion is premature to say the least.

They are in the process of going 3-3 in a trip to Colorado and Minnesota. That doesn't exactly strike confidence in staying in a race long-term.

It's always hard to disentangle public-speak from reality, but Cashman has been especially straightforward to reporters in recent years and I think NY is at risk of making a bad mistake here if they don't move at least one of their relievers by the deadline. Still more than a month to go, plenty of time, but still not crazy about reading this:

No one has mentioned him but they should really move Romine for a minor leaguer with options if at all possible, whether they incorrectly think they're still in it or not. Not only is Gary Sanchez healthy again and more than ready, but Kyle Higashioka has been absolutely killing it lately in both AA and AAA (he had to go back down when Sanchez came back):

"Since May 28, between AAA and AA, Higashioka is .426/.474/.941, 8 2B, 9 HR, 31 RBI."

https://twitter.com/DonnieCollinsTT

Both have good defensive reps also, time to bump them both up and Romine out the door. Thanks in advance.

Miller looks like he is staying a Yankee. Yankees are turning down offers for him and say he is staying

Well, he's the guy they shouldn't move unless they really have an offer they're happy with, but there's a long way to go. Luckily they have a brutal schedule starting soon and should be pretty buried in a few weeks, so Cashman will hopefully be able to do whatever he thinks best.

Barry Bloom of MLB.com reports that the Yankees informed Andrew Miller on Sunday that he will not be traded.
It appears that the star left-hander will remain as part of the Yankees late-inning crew for the remainder of the season. That doesn't mean that Aroldis Chapman won't be going anywhere though, and if he does, Miller could return to the ninth-inning role that he began the season in.

Come on, don't we know better than to reprint that kind of thing? We all know that no matter what's been said publicly and privately up to now, if someone makes Cashman an offer he likes, Miller is gone. Here's one of the best Yankee tweeters, a scout, in response to that:

Finally a bit of sanity from NY management, from an Olney Insider column posted an hour ago:

"Executives with other teams say they haven't been told specifically by the Yankees that New York will execute a sell-off before the Aug. 1 trade deadline. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner has not exactly climbed a mountain and shouted his intentions.

But rival evaluators say the Yankees are taking offers for Andrew Miller, Aroldis Chapman and other players right now, setting up the team to execute trades quickly whenever the club's leadership decides to refocus the organization's efforts to 2017.

Rival evaluators say that beyond Chapman and Miller, the Yankees are prepared to take offers on catcher Brian McCann and outfielders Carlos Beltran and Brett Gardner, as well as pitchers Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and Nathan Eovaldi. If the Yankees decide to move Miller and/or Chapman, it would make sense for them to go all-in with their deal-making and flip as many veterans as possible.

One rival evaluator said he felt his team made an "aggressive" proposal for one of the late-inning relievers, and that the Yankees seem serious about considering their offer."

Oh, c'mon ... you really shouldn't be selling off valuable pieces while you have a legit chance at a wild cad spot. Think of the children!

So as a fan I would really be excited by a fairly major cleaning house this month:

1) DFA A-Rod, sunken cost, swallow the rest in the interest of player development, bye.
2) Do your best to trade at least one of Beltran/McCann, the other can DH and Sanchez/Judge come up at C/RF. This also allows them to get Kyle Higashioka back to AAA because he is just destroying AA, another HR tonight.
3) Auction Chapman to the highest bidder, looking for ready or near-ready prospect/s.
4) Listen to any and all bids on Miller, but hold him if you're not very happy with the return.
5) Rotation: I'm open to ideas about moving any of these guys except I guess Tanaka/Severino. I don't know if any have much value, although Pineda is under contract through 2017 and does seem to have turned it around, for now anyway.

Tex I guess gets to stay because there aren't any great alternatives and he is still the best defensive option, he is lucky that Bird went down. So they would go from:

Ellsbury CF
Gardner LF
Beltran RF
A-Rod DH
Tex 1B
McCann C
Castro 2B
Headley 3B
Didi SS

To something more towards:

Ellsbury CF
Gardner LF
Castro 2B
McCann DH/C
Judge RF
Sanchez C/DH
Didi SS
Headley 3B
Tex 1B (wishful thinking)

I'd also be OK with moving both Beltran and McCann if possible and rotating the DH, maybe bringing up another outfielder like Puello or Cave or Gamel, or they have 1B options like Ike Davis or Tyler Austin plus hopefully Parmelee again before too long. I just think NY needs to see if some of these kids can play or not, and any moves they can make to clear playing time will help them proceed from there.

I like the idea of trading McCann. I think he could have a lot of value on the market. He is a good receiver and has pop. Catcher has been a nightmare for many teams around the league this year so I bet they could get a pretty good prospect for him.

McCann has full no-trade protection, and $17M salaries in '17 and '18 (Cot's). Houston's in need of a catcher, but the Astros aren't paying that contract ... even if he agreed to go there.

Dealing him somewhere isn't impossible, but finding a contender with catching problems and a willingness to eat some of the contract -- and is a place that he will want to go -- isn't going to be easy. Then there's the entire matter of bringing in a starting catcher at the deadline to learn a completely new pitching staff.

Texas needs a catcher too, and agreed that it's not always so easy or prudent to switch catchers for a contender mid-year, but Texas did it in 2010 with Bengie Molina (acquired on July 1) and made the World Series.

I almost said Texas, but they clearly need so much in terms of pitching help that a catcher shouldn't be a priority for them ... not with that offense.

Again, would McCann waive the no trade?

I wouldn't worry about a guy like McCann having to learn a pitching staff. Aside from the fact he has a ton of experience, a couple of teams in desperate need of a catcher right now are just shuffling guys in and out of the role, so there is no harm in going out and getting a vet, I don't really see what the big deal is on that front.

I have no idea if he would accept a trade. I would if I was him, get off this sinking ship.

I would think anyone looking at a C would go after Lucroy first, no? Crazy cheap, younger, better and still has an option. Prospect price likely different but unless NYY pick up a ton of McCann $, can they get enough to make it worth it?

Yeah they probably would. Prospect price would be higher though. I also think multiple teams are in need of a catcher, so if a team misses out on Lucroy they could look to McCann.

I love this line

According to a baseball source who spoke to ESPN on condition of anonymity, the opposing factions are composed of the baseball operations people, led by general manager Brian Cashman, who believe the team should sell off its assets and plan for the future, and the business side of the Yankees, led by owner Hal Steinbrenner and team president Randy Levine, who hold to the belief that the club is still in contention.

"There's only two people in the tri-state area who think this team is still a contender," the source said. "Hal Steinbrenner and Randy Levine."

I still think they're it's gonna go a Miller + ? /Schwarber deal. Both teams are playing the "we're not trading him" way too hard, trying to up their values.

Chapman for Gallo and Miller for Schwarber.

Quick way to add a ton of young power to an old lineup.

Lots of strikeouts too, but nobody cares about that anymore.

I was listening to MLB Radio on my commute in today and they had on one of the Cubs pre/post game guys on and asked him specifically about Schwarber. He said a couple of things that I thought were interesting in regard to his trade value and how the Cubs front office sees using him going forward.

Basically it came down to that a) Schwarber isn't on the table for a 60 inning a year pitcher but might be for a younger ace caliber starter (predictably they mentioned Jose Fernandez) and that b) from what the doctors are saying Schwarber's recovery is going well enough that the Cubs FO is pencilling him in to play OF and be their backup catcher next season and preparing to walk away from the stink that is coming off Miguel Montero at the end of this year.

Also he suggested that if the Cubs and Arrieta can't come to a somewhat discounted extension this offseason that they will openly attempt to move him next year. Arrieta has stated that he won't do a "hometown discount" and is a Boras guy so I'd look for him to be on the market this time next year.

I don't really want Schwarber, unless they're planning to just make him the mostly full-time DH for his whole career, Edgar Martinez style. I would like that young Cubs OF prospect who looked awesome in the Futures game, though, Eloy Jimenez, #29 in Keith Law's list yesterday.

29. Eloy Jimenez, OF
Chicago Cubs
Previous rank: NR
Current level: Class A

Signed in the same July 2 class as Torres, Eloy has been the Cubs' biggest breakout prospect this year, showing that the system, which I ranked fourth coming into 2016, is far from depleted even after last year's wave of promotions. Eloy, still just 19 years old, is smashing the Midwest League, posting a .332/.372/.527 line, and he showed off his great range in right field and huge raw power in Sunday's Futures Game. He's tied for second in the league in homers and is fourth in batting average and slugging, so while he might see his power dip next year in Myrtle Beach, he has the potential to be the Cubs' next great middle-of-the-order bat.

And with a name like "Eloy", wouldn't he be a fan favorite of those seated in the infrequently occupied plutocrat seats behind the plate and just off the field and carefully kept a caste apart from the morlocks in the other seating sections of yankee stadium?
