So what happens if/when Tony Romo decides to sign with Denver instead?

Do they give up more picks for a Jimmy G or stick with Savage?

Browns get Osweiler, Houston's 2018 2cnd rounder, and Houston's 2017 6th rounder, Houston get the Browns 2017 4th rounder and $10M in cap space.

This is like an NHL cap floor move. Browns need to hit that 90% mark in a few years and this helps and gets them a pick. They're still run like shit, though.

Different sport, but... For those advocating a trade of Craig, Toolsney or Panda -- this is an example of how it would go down.

So Cleveland just bought a 2nd for $16M? Makes sense if they didn't want to spend that money elsewhere, build with youth and have the cap space next off-season.

I wouldn't let Garrapolo near Osweiler's stink for a full season. If they wanted JG and he's supposedly plug and play, this doesn't make much sense.
Except for the salary floor rule and the fact that Brock won't cost as much for Cleveland to jettison.

Did they maybe fall in love with a QB at the combine and want to buy a year or two of developmental time for him?
So you literally think being in physical proximity to Brock Osweiller would make Jimmy G perform worse? You might actually be right, but I'm still a skeptic.

So who made the first phone call?

HOU (going through the motions because everyone is laughing at them): "Hey Cleveland, look we're a little bored today and just wondered, you know, for shits and giggles, what we would have to include with Osweiler in order for you guys to take him off our hands?"

or

CLE: "Hey Houston---you've got a problem!!! HA HA, see what I did there? Anyway, that problem is Brock. And we're the solution"
HOU: "Um, seriously? Hold on." HOLY SHIT GET EVERYONE IN HERE THE FUCKING BROWNS ARE SERIOUS!!!

So, Cleveland essentially is buying a draft pick with their cap space?

This move is scary -- I think Houston was clicking on all cylinders on defense at the end of the year without Watt. With a QB they are very scary in the AFC.

What does it cost the Browns if they just cut him?
No one seems to have that yet.

EDIT: $16 million.

Saw a tweet that said after Broncos won the Super Bowl, Osweiler skipped the White House visit to hang out with new team. That just gave up 2nd rounder to get rid of him a year later.

Now we have our answer... Sonny Weaver, Jr. IS running the Browns.

I do like this particular deal for the Browns from the minimum cap/draft pick perspective.

From the field perspective, they just spent a shitload of money on an OL. Anyone they put under center at this point should be relatively safe. Maybe Osweiler could be competent in that scenario.

Now they are an Adrian Peterson away from feeling like Super Bowl contenders.

It's a brilliant move. They have to hit the salary floor, why handcuff yourself to long term deals. Instead buy a 2 round pick. Out of the box thinking that the NFL lacks. Now just give us the 12 pick and a 2 next year for Jimmy g.

From Mary Kay Cabot to get the Cleveland perspective.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns acquired Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler and a second-round pick in 2018, a league source told cleveland.com.

The Browns sent a 2017 fourth-round pick (142 overall) to Houston.

The Browns also get a 2017 sixth-round pick (188 overall).

For the Browns, it's all about acquiring that second-round pick and not as much about Osweiler. For the Texans, it's about unloading Osweiler's $16 million guaranteed contract for 2017.

His $18 million and $17 million base salaries in 2018 and 2019 are not guaranteed.

The move will not preclude them from trying to trade for Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo, which they're still expected to do.

OK, would you trade Jimmy G for the Browns 2017 2nd and both of their top 2 2018 2nds (they currently have 3, I believe?)

I'd think long and hard about that deal.

Maybe it's just because I'm an NBA guy and used to these sort of moves, but I love this from Cleveland's perspective. Take an asset you aren't using (cap space) and turn it into something useful. Cut Brock now or let him be a punching bag for 16 weeks. Either way you walk with a 2nd round pick for doing almost nothing.

Not a chance. Not enough.
Maybe not quite enough but it's still a decent starting point. Pick value wise, if all 3 picks are near the top of the second round in two straight drafts, that would be the equivalent value of a top 10 first rounder. What if they gave their two 2017 seconds and their top two 2018 seconds?

Saw this on twitter, but I'm an idiot so I can't post the link:

The Browns' picks in the next two drafts:
2017: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6
2018: 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 7

Holy shit.

This was my reaction as well. Who are you realistically giving a FA deal to with that cash who is still going to help you when you get good again? It's not all that different from BB reaping excess value in the draft all those years by exploiting differing perceptions of present vs future value.
