Apparently, Coleman can't grasp enough X's and O's to win a game of Tic-tac-toe.
That has been the reporting and certainly could be true. I wonder if the Pats are just seeing how they evaluate him, or whether perhaps they imagine a role that is simple enough for him? I know that's not their general approach but they also are masters of making the system fit what the players can execute.

Pats are signing Corey Coleman per Rap Sheet. I'll be surprised if he sticks. First round talent but can't seem to shake the injury bug.

I think his bigger problem is between his ears. New England’s system is notoriously demanding on receivers mentally. I can’t see this working out, but I’ve been wrong before.

No Dez :(

I don't see how this has any chance of working out.

Corey Coleman has not been good. Has a 39% and 44% catch rate respectively the last two years. Don't think he is going to last a few more weeks. Just give us Dez.

Why do you say the bolded? Isn't it as likely that he has trouble learning the system and struggles to mesh with Brady? It's not like we haven't had this happen before (see: Ochocinco, Chad) -- and this is not even consider the potential for a distraction in the locker room. This team does not exactly have a great track record of wringing a last year or two out of old receivers who've lost a step.
As any player that comes in with no time to learn the system, what you said is true of most players. It absolutely could not work with Bryant. But, given his talent level and the fact he is coming off a 69-838-6 season I think he could contribute moreso than Corey Coleman or Bennie Fowler.

Worth a look. More upside than Dez. I don't see anything on length. Hopefully an option on next year.

Dez isn't a good fit, imo. He's looking to showcase his talents and establish value. Not sure how happy he'd be being the 4th or 5th option

Here is a complete list of all of the QBs he has worked with in his two previous years in the league: Cody Kessler, Josh McCown, RG III, DeShone Kizer, Kevin Hogan

Safe to say that some of his "targets" may have been difficult to catch with that motley crew.

My understanding is that, separate from the money or throw-me-the-damn-ball demands, Dez looked cooked last year AND doesn't have a very diverse route-tree skill set. Any Cowboy fans want to weigh in?

Not saying this will work, but he also had some bad injury luck. From wikipedia:

In his first regular season game on September 11, 2016, Coleman recorded two receptions for 69 yards. In Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, Coleman made five receptions for 104 receiving yards and two touchdowns.Coleman broke his hand during practice on September 21, and was ruled out 4–6 weeks.

In Week 1 of the 2017 season, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Coleman caught the first career touchdown pass from quarterback DeShone Kizer. He finished the game with five receptions for 53 yards. In Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, Coleman suffered another broken hand, the same hand that hindered him in the 2016 season. He had surgery on the hand on September 18, 2017 and was ruled out 6–8 weeks. He was placed on injured reserve the next day. He was activated off injured reserve to the active roster on November 16, 2017. On December 31, 2017, he dropped a pass late in the fourth quarter to seal the Browns' 0-16 season.

where I was last at
Coleman was the star of Hard Knocks E2- he's got 1000 pair of sneakers and a great attitude. Demanded to be traded when he was working with the Browns 2nd team. So they did.

I'd also throw in that his coach was Hue Jackson. And his offensive coordinator ... I have no clue whatsoever.
Yeah, I made this point in the other thread before it got split out, I'm not sure "can't learn a playbook" means a whole lot with the Cleveland coaching staff. Buffalo, his OC was Daboll, which does give a minute of pause since he's basically the same offense; that being said, it seems it was more of an attitude issue there and, yeah, they suck too.

I understand there's a decent chance that Corey Coleman won't make it too far past this week's game, for which he will almost certainly be one of the Game Day inactives. He will very likely not contribute much of anything, even if he manages to stick with the 53 for the entire rest of the season. Having said that...I am surely not the only one here hoping against hope that he can somehow finally take the reins and be WHO HE WAS MEANT TO BE, if for no other reason ('though there are many others, not the least of which is an iffy-ish WR depth chart) than to completely piss off the entire NFL. Here's a decent, subscriber-only article from Chris Price at BSJ. Good stuff. Here's hoping...

Pretty much this...

Dez can definitely still get the jump balls though and fight into the end zone on WR screens, etc, even last year. He would be great in the red zone. The biggest problem for Dez is even in his prime, he never was much of a route-runner. He just used his ridiculous physical skills to get the ball. He lost a half step after the broken leg a couple years ago and that was the end of his "elite" days. He probably wishes he had learned to run more precise routes now.

I will say this, and mentioned it in the Cowboys thread last year...Dak IMHO was a significantly worse QB for Dez's skill set than Romo was so at least a little of his dropoff could be due to that. Romo threw a lot more touch passes and Dak seems to throw a lot of low liners even when he throws it fairly deep. Dez needs the ball up where he can exploit his physical advantage.

I assume the patriots don't want the distraction but at this point, I would think you could sign him for very little risk and just cut him if it isn't working.

After these last two signings the bigger issue is practice reps. There are only so many fliers you can evaluate at once.
