Danny Shelton entered the NFL as a 2015 first-round pick (No. 12 overall). Is scheduled to earn a base salary of $2.030 million in 2018. Joins Malcom Brown and Lawrence Guy atop interior DT depth chart.

Danny Shelton (6-2, 335) has played under three different defensive coordinators in 3 years -- Jim O'Neil (3-4 scheme), Ray Horton (3-4), Gregg Williams (4-3). Big, strong presence at nose. Projects as better scheme fit in Patriots' multiple D.

Shelton a really good run stuffer. Offsets losses of big bodies like RJF and Branch.

5th year option was 11.7M, so makes sense for the Browns to move him. Really good against the run, but they have a lot of interior D-line depth/

I like Shelton. Yet again we seem allergic to building a pass rush from the outside, but inn a vacuum this is a good pickup
When will Belichick ever learn?

Our third and their fifth? So basically 33 draft slots. Different years but still those packs are closer than they appear.

I know you are being snarky but we are near the bottom in QB pressure more often than not. Just saying may be nice every now and then to knock backup QBs on their asses so they don’t, you know, march up and down the field and win Super Bowls

The offseason is just beginning. They fucked up royally on Bennett, but they still have time and resources.

Valentine was hurt, Branch is gone, we needed to add depth there. Defensive tackle is not a strength in this year’s draft and it takes a year or two to develop those guys anyway. We had an immediate need so Bill plugged it.

But he didn't get something else they need.

Its damn near impossible to make it to the SuperBowl damn near every year AND be near the top offensively AND near the top defensively.

I concede to your superior logic.

Patriots were consistently gashed up the middle against the run last year. Football outsiders had them ranked worst in the NFL against runs to guard/mid. Shelton should help with that problem.

I love this move. Low cap hit for a young guy on a rookie deal who fills a need and looks like he is very coachable in our scheme.

My guess is a LB signing is next.

This is not true at least according to footballoutsiders. 10th in rush rate last year. We had like 7 sacks against Tennessee in the playoffs.

Trey Flowers continues to improve and is already a very good player. A healthy Hightower, even for about 12 games and a playoff run, equals a significant upgrade. Wise will likely play more and may make a leap. After spending the season on IR, Rivers will hopefully begin to contribute as well.

So while they’re far from great on the edge, there’s more talent there than was shown in ‘17, and they’ll add guys through free agency, the draft, or both.

Good move. Made solid strides last two seasons. For a 5th rounder it’s a steal even if they decline the 5th year option. Hopefully he can duplicate his success in Cleveland.

For those curious here are Shelton's combine numbers and percentiles. It doesn't matter to me but if we wanted to revisit the past, then yes, perhaps he should not have been a 1st round pick and if he came out this year, I think, would not likely be one. Again that doesn't matter for his role in 2018 with the Pats.

Height: 6021 33rd percentile
Weight: 339 (he's a big boy!) 98th percentile

40: 5.64, 1st percentile
10: 1.9, 5th percentile
20: 3.21, 1st percentile
Bench: 34, 93rd percentile
Vertical: 30.5, 74th percentile! Big boy has hops (that is by far my favorite new expression)
Broad: 7'11", 8th percentile
Shuttle: 4.65, 53rd percentile
3-Cone: 7.99, 20th percentile

Even adjusting for weight Danny Shelton is not a top tier athlete but he is huge and strong. If he ends up needing to rush the passer he can at least make it difficult for the QB to step up into the pocket.

It's a 2019 third-rounder they're trading. They get a 2018 fifth-rounder from Cleveland

The original thing I saw was a 5th this year and a 3rd next year. Either way still solid

Seems like a quality piece with some decent additional upside. We were getting gashed up the middle last year pretty good at times.

The more I think about it the more I think this is a 1 year deal.

They won’t pick up the 2019 option. Too expensive.

If he plays lousy, they won’t bring him back.

If he plays well, someone else will sign him for big $, but then that will result in a comp pick in 2020.

So it seems like a win-win. Even if he plays lousy the cost wasn’t enormous.

I feel like the Patriots have made a lot of trades over the past three or four years where they traded for a player on the last year of their rookie contract.

According to Kyed, the option for both DTs is "upwards of $7 million." I have no idea how any of this works, just throwing this out there.

I love this deal, especially trading a future pick for a current one, while TB12 is still young. They can always trade for a 2019 pick after next season.

He's not going to be as good as prime Wilfork, but can certainly be TWash or better.

He was a state champion shot-putter and an Academic All-American. Sounds like a Belichickian player.

There's no chance they're picking up Dorsett's 9. I do fear that this means Brown hasn't progressed as expected.
