The nation's tears --

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. --

Hawkins confirmed the deal on Uninterrupted, the network developed by LeBron James and his business partner Maverick Carter, saying, "I'm super excited about the opportunity to join the reigning football champions. I exited Cleveland, and I said it was about joining a contender and the Patriots are the contender, the reigning champs. The program is top-notch and you get the opportunity to play with the best quarterback and the best coach in NFL history."

Hawkins added that he passed up on deals that "were probably double the compensation" with other teams.

"It's all about winning for me at this point, and putting myself in the best position to do so. I have my work cut out for me, it's an opportunity, and that's how I'm approaching it: Go in there, seeing how I stack up with the best, and try to earn my keep and prove my worth. Hopefully I can be a part of something special and kind of join that Patriots legacy."

Kind of an odd signing. Is this just a warm body that ends up as a training camp casualty? I have a hard time seeing him breaking into the core group of Edelman, Cooks, Hogan, Amendola, and Mitchell.

As it stands now, Brandin Cooks, Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Malcolm Mitchell are viewed as "locks" to make the club. Special-teams captain Matthew Slater, while technically listed as a receiver despite playing only 53 snaps at the position in 2016, also falls into that category.
That leaves what would likely be just one spot on the initial 53-man roster for the remaining group of Danny Amendola, Hawkins, Devin Lucien, Devin Street, DeAndrew White, Austin Carr and Cody Hollister.
Many things can happen between now and that point, but if everyone is healthy, it could come down to Amendola versus Hawkins as the most likely options for that one spot.

I am somewhat disappointed to find that Artrell is not hosting a radio show somewhere. His interviews with D&H when he played for the Patriots were filled with candid, thoughtful answers and a rich, deep basso profoundo that would make Barry White jealous.

Yeah I had no idea he was his brother. Always appreciated what Artrell brough to the D back in 2005 - he helped stabilize the secondary while Rodney was hurt

He lost his broadcasting jobs after kicking down his wife's door while holding a knife.

Handwriting on the wall concerning making the team perhaps? Kind of odd...
Maybe BB talked him into just coming in and learning the plays so he could be emergency deep depth a la Colvin and Seau.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but this means that if he did play, it can only be for NE, right?

Hawkins said he wanted to play for the Patriots and they wanted him, but it just wasn’t going to work out.

“They were disappointed,” he said. “I told them I was appreciative of the opportunity to work with an organization as storied as they are.”

Hawkins played three seasons with the Browns and three with the Bengals. He recently got a master’s degree from Columbia and said the next step in his life will be working on a Ph.D. in business and economics.
Seems more like Hawkins figuring out the path he wanted his life to take was going to be something other than playing in the NFL. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/07/25/andrew-hawkins-announces-his-retirement/

He's 31, career earnings just under $13 million, good education, walking away in decent health.

Not a bad way to go, good luck.
