Another gem:
I'd say that Belichik was interested in Harris to pick his brain about what, if anything, the Jets were going to do differently this season.

The 2nd year is almost certainly a benefit to the Patriots, not to the player.
Yeah but what if it has a player opt-o... um... nevermind.

I'm viewing this as Hightower injury insurance. Someone intelligent enough to be trusted by BB to run the defense, even if he doesn't have the wheels to make plays quite as dramatically or as often anymore.

Bill has to be going for the perfect season, right?
Shermanesque.

Most of the TGG thread are reasonable, measured reactions, with an appropriate dose of resigned humor. And then there's this:

If an owner of a company ever gave me $50+ Million over 10 years? Just to show up a couple of times per week (practice) & only work on Sunday's for 60 minutes?

I could never thank him enough.

I would work for pennies on the dollar during years 11 & 12 just to show him how thankful me and my family are.

But i could never. And would never... Leave him for a rival owner (after first refusing a paycut).

In the context of Trader Danny's perplexing off season, and seeing John Farrell botch yet another game yesterday, the David Harris signing was especially sweet.

Need LB depth? Check.

Need a finger in the eye of a franchise/fanbase that deserves a fist in the eye? Check.

But now I'm getting a little piggy. I need the Pats need to once again demonstrate their intellectual superiority over all others in the NFL and the other Boston sports franchises by picking up Nick Mangold for OL depth. He's out there, available and he'd probably take some sort of discount for the chance to play for a ring and shove it up the Jets' ass. Do this.

Leaving in a bit to the studio :)

The funniest recurring theme is to point out how Harris is getting so old and so slow and so hurt that he's going to be an embarrassment and a sieve on D for the Pats all season long. It's as if the Pats are building their entire D around him, and have no alternative than to play him every down of every game, in addition to his contract handcuffing them capwise for years to come.

For totally non-Jets, and purely for football, reasons, signing Mangold makes a ton of sense. The Jets piece would just make it sweeter.

Starting to actually feel a little sad for Jets fans. Not really, this is great.

TGG:
Brady, Bellichick & N.E are the Barry Bonds and Lance Armstrong of Football and should have been banned long ago (just like Pete Rose). I'd rather die & never have seen my team win than to live and know my team cheated while the whole world laughs and mocks our "accomplishments".
What happened to a player such as David Harris being loyal to his team & thankful for receiving (just one of his NFL contracts) in which paid him $21,500,00 with $15 million guaranteed?
Harris bit the hand that fed him over $54 Million during 10 years and REFUSED a paycut for the better of his team
I can't wait for Leonard Williams and Jamal Adams to become Patriots one day.
The unique sickness of being a Jets fan just gets deeper and deeper.

Cimini "...it's so perfect, so Jets": http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/69509/ex-jet-david-harris-gets-the-last-laugh-signs-with-super-bowl-champs

Here's the Victor Green's TD he mentions in the article:

...and this paragraph, which speaks to the move, Belichick, and the GG grousing:

Some will say this is Belichick sticking it to the Jets, but let me tell you something about Belichick: His idea of sticking it to the Jets is beating them, over and over, and he does that by adding useful players to his roster. Obviously, he believes Harris, 33, can help him win a sixth Super Bowl title.

Is there any history of Belichick doing something specifically to mess with or spite a particular opponent, rather than what was best for his football team in the abstract? Other than trick plays and goofiness like Testaverde's drop-kick FG of course. Revis, Browner, even acquisition of Welker seemed simply opportunistic rather than driven by the team he was hurting in the process.

Testaverde's drop-kick FG? You mean Flutie's drop kick extra point?

That would have been even better.

The best part about SoSH is I'm scrolling down reading posts about an hour old and I just KNEW someone would make this correction before I had the chance to do so. It took 2 minutes, for the record.
The corollary to this best part is knowing we've all been on both sides of that situation

I'm partial to this one:

"Will football ever be good again?"
My favorite, in response to the supposition that the Pats signed Harris so as to pick his brain regarding the Jets playbook:

Belichick doesn't need Harris to know what we're going to do, everyone knows what we're going to do.

Week 6, Pats @ Jets. We win the coin flip, which is the only thing we'll win all game. Bowles elects to receive because that's what he does. Gostkowski kicks it 9 yards deep into the endzone, Jalin Marshall bobbles it but still takes it out and gets tackled at the 5. McCown, who gives us the best chance to win, hands it off on first and second downs to bring up 3rd and 9. After recovering a high snap, the pocket breaks down, but he throws it anyway to avoid getting blasted. Revis intercepts it and takes a knee to save himself for the SB.

Meanwhile Josh McDaniels is too busy laughing to call plays, so the Pats run on first and second downs. Leonard Williams stuffs the RB twice bringing up 3rd and 10. Then Brady finds Brandin Cooks for the score after Marcus Williams falls down and Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye smack heads. Adams walks to the sideline and is placed in the concussion protocol. Maye runs to the Pats sideline and is cleared because he had the sense to run away from the Jets.

Belichick asks Harris if this is how it always is. Harris smiles softly and says a silent prayer of thanks that his suffering is, at long last, over.

This is just sad...

I'd be loyal for way less than $54 Million over 10 years too. I woulda rather joined a different team.

If my wife were to ever leave me? I could never go after the lady from her job who she hates. Out of my love for her I'd try an meet a woman she's never met before before ever using another woman as a weapon against her.

This is just sad...
If the other woman was Emily Ratajkowski this slob would would run over his ex wife on the way to Emily's bedroom.

These two comments were after the Jets lost in heartbreaking fashion Week 17 two seasons ago. It was a loss that kept them out of the playoffs. Sorry for the re-post but since we're quoting TGG...

The user name "Bill Belidouche" is a nice added touch as well.

From PFT:

David Harris “pretty much accepted on the spot” when Patriots called
The first and only visit Harris took during his brief time as a free agent was with the Patriots and he signed a two-year contract with the team before he left the building.

“They reached out to me and I pretty much accepted on the spot that I wanted to play there,” Harris said from his football camp in Grand Rapids, Michigan, via WOOD-TV. “Great organization. They’re the gold standard of the NFL. Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of that?”

Snaps played, regular season:

Week 1 ... 2
Week 2 ... 0
That seems strange to me. I mean, as a Jet, he was a starter, right? I wonder if he is hurt and they are hiding him, or if he just sucks and they are hiding him. Obviously since he is still on the roster, they are expecting him to be on the field.

First two opponents weren't exactly good matchups for him. I could see more of him vs. both Houston and Carolina.

From a running game perspective, I think I agree that Houston and Carolina would be better match-ups. But they both have mobile QBs, and in particular I think BB is going to want to spy Watson and make him beat them with his arm. Harris doesn't seem to have the speed to either cover guys or spy a QB like Watson.

Lack of speed means severely limited match-up potential these days. The fact that Roberts is getting so much more burn might just mean he's at the bottom of the depth chart regardless of match-up.

True, good point on the mobile QBs. I think Van Noy has played every snap so far this season. Need Shea back at some point.
