Paul George to OKC

I think the Lakers took a big risk in not topping this offer. The tandem of Russell and George probably makes this a 55-win team. Are the Lakers so sure that George is going to be willing to leave that for an LA team bound for the low lottery? Obviously if LeBron leads the way George will follow but if that doesn't happen they let a surefire chance of getting a star who is willing to extend because they didn't want to give up anything of real value.

Also, what's the point of this deal from OKC's perspective? Why bother with a one year George rental? If Westbrook+Durant couldn't get them to the promised land, Westbrook + George and a bunch of trash isn't going to either.

I don't disagree---though Presti might say it's an incentive for Westbrook to re-sign, with chance George does as well.

Isn't getting out of paying Dipo while having a top 4/5 team enough? Russ/PG/Adams is fun. I would go watch that

I would prefer Oladipo and Sabonis over any two of Bradley/Smart/Crowder
For a team in IND's position?

Frankly, if IND was worried about wins, it seems clear that AB + Jae are better. If they wanted to build for the future, the draft picks would have been better. And if it was just wanted to sell tickets, they should have seen if DA would have traded IT4.

The Celtics presumably offered actual picks that were half decent. You're comparing parts of two different deals.
And the Cs best offer was probably to come. If the Cs sign Heyward it could change Ainge's opinion about their ability to keep PG. Why not wait till after the free agency period? Were they really worried that the Olodipo and Sabonis package wasn't going to be available to them if they waited? Considering how unimpressive the return is and the fact that Pritchard could have had the number 1 overall pick and three extra first rounders just a few months ago, the man really deserves to be fired...

If the future draft picks are BOS18 or LAC19 or MEM19, those are more than likely not anywhere near as "good" as Sabonis or Oladipo. Or at least not as good through certain eyes.

I have to think that any C's deal of decent value was contingent on PG signing an extension.

It's a signal to Westbrook which says, we will find good players to help you." In OKC, everyone expects Russ to sign his super-max contract. Just because George is a one-year rental doesn't mean that Presti can't pull a rabbit out of the OKC hat again next year.

Don't think Pritchard was in charge at the trade deadline and #1 pock was never offered up.

How the fuck do you take Oladipo for 20 million a year over Love? Do they like Sabonis that much. Do they refuse to trade PG to an East team. This looks absurd right now. I feel like information must be missing
Upthread someone posted a report by Dave McMenamin which says that the Cavs believed that the Pacers were intent on trading PG13 to the West because "they didn't want him as competition in the way of their rebuild".

Now that train of thought is obscenely stupid but looking at this trade it's clear that their main goal was to ship him out of the Eastern Conference

The picks were in addition to AB + JC, who would have won more games for IND than VO and DS will.

If Pritchard really wanted to win now, he should have asked for all three of AB, JC, and MS and no draft pocks. I bet DA would have done that.

Not only that, IND would have more salary cap flexibility to complete/facilitate trade deadline deals, and/or compete for FA next year.

I cannot believe that they wanted PG out of the east so badly that they'd turn down better offers.

I'm not a Pacers fan but I'm kind of angry for them right now.

It's extremely obvious now that Pritchard just wanted PG13 out of the east
Like Indy is going to win in the next 3 years anyway. Any GM on a rebuilding team who uses "don't trade within the division" as anything but a tiebreaker is an idiot. Just take the best deal.

Especially when you're trading a player on the last year of his contract. Extract whatever you can from your competitor and hope the player moves on after that.

If Danny actually offered what was rumored doesn't everyone think George would be a Celtic? I call BS on the rumored offers.
Are you not seeing all these reports that suggest that Pritchard wanted to trade him out of the conference. Furthermore, George doesn't appear to be extending with anyone - that changes the complexion of any Celtics deal considerably.

The "we need to keep PG out of the East" excuse for this trade is the most laughable thing in the NBA since Phil Jackson identified a skipped exit interview as his reason for wanting to move Porzingis. Indiana is almost certainly going to be a non-contender for a long, long time. Their only path to relevancy again will be smart GMing, and worrying about the competition in a league where you are non-competitive either way, is not something that indicates Pritchard is up to that challenge..

Lot of pressure to close Hayward now.
Meh. Hayward would be nice, I guess, but he doesn't put them over the top any time soon and there will be plenty of other free agents/trade targets available in the next couple years. The Celtics would actually be best off making some big moves 2 years from now, though if the opportunity arises beforehand you obviously gotta take it.

I'm honestly not even sure I want Hayward on a max deal if there's no other shoe to drop at this point. Let's build for 2020. I'm ambivalent.

By the time the pacers are good enough to challenge the Celtics or Cavs in the east Paul George might be retired (or Lebron will be gone and the Cavs will suck)

In a world where Joe Ingles makes 15 million dollars, you sign Gordon Hayward for 30 million as fast as you can. I'd rather pay Gordon Hayward 40 million dollars than pay Oladipo 20.

You sign Hayward for a max deal all day e'rry day if he wants to come to Boston. Unlike George, he costs only money and select players whom the C's have to let go in exchange for years of control over him. Simply put, he makes the Celtics better the next season and years beyond.

Sure, but it kind of underscores how big the gap in talent between max players can be, as well. If they miss out on Hayward, there will be other opportunities the next few years and those players wouls come for years Boston is more likely to win a title. You can almost wipe out the first two seasons of Hayward's deal if he signs here, at least almost certainly the first.

I mean, I wouldn't be upset at all if he signs here, but I won't be devastated or anything if he goes back to Utah. The Celtics will be in excellent shape moving forward, regardless.

I really don't know what to believe DeJesus. It just a shock.
I agree this came out of nowhere but I am less unhappy about this than I would be if the Celtics traded Bradley, Crowder and a pick or two only to see George walk next summer.

That would have absolutely sucked and potentially set this franchise back years in terms of tradable assets as well as how this team is viewed by other free agents. If Danny can carefully construct a team via the draft and select signings (for players who don't have a huge axe to play in one place over another), he not only builds a contender for the post-Warriors years but also makes Boston a more attractive spot for veterans who are chasing rings.

I'm not a title or bust guy, so I don't agree. I enjoy the hell out of watching good Celtics basketball when it doesn't hurt the future. I only see positives to signing Hayward.

If Ainge really drew the line at Crowder + Bradley/Smart and 2-3 1st round draft picks (that were not Brooklyn 18 or LAL18/SAC19) then I am glad he didn't let the noise get to him. The reported offer is already far superior what Indiana actually accepted, and to trade more for 1 year of George with no guarantee of extension is foolish. Even if George were willing to extend, I am not convinced it would be a good deal because even with a core of IT/Hayward/George/Horford, they would be good enough to maybe get by Cleveland, but would fall short of GS.

I think folks fail to realize that (1) Indiana really wanted to ship PG to the West; (2) even if Ainge was willing to include LAL18/SAC19 Indiana still might have insisted on Brooklyn18'; and (3) Maintaining roster flexibility while holding onto two potential lottery picks in a robust 2018 draft (with 3-4 potentially transcendant players) is not a negative.

The issue with trading with Danny is that other teams are seemingly unwilling to accept lower valued assets from him.

If its the Brooklyn pick that turned out to be #1 (2017), the offer had to have been made last season at the trade deadline or last offseason. Brooklyn 2018 doesn't seem to have ever been on the table
Don't think anyone was trying to say that the 2018 pick was on the table. And yes, the rumor was that it was offered at the trade deadline..

I guess you could say this, but couldn't you say this for literally any team besides GSW and maybe the Cavs? But that won't stop plenty of teams from signing expensive free agents.

Agreed. They try to rob the millionaire, and end up settling for a chump change when he doesn't cave.
What's "chump change" here? The Brooklyn and LA draft picks? Are the millionaire's assets one year of Paul George?

Or are you talking about other GMs taking less in their trades? I think maybe that's what you meant.

Teams want to feel they are winning some part of any trade and they can't unless they get one of the top valued picks.
Then we're 'stuck' being a borderline one seed restocking our team with lottery picks to grow in a winning environment for another year.

Made the ECF. We're adding top young talent in Tatum and Zizic - maybe Yabu as well - in place of players like Amir and Gerald. We might get Hayward. Jaylen has a year under his belt and played well in a game seven before turning 21. Things look very good.
