deep inside Guido territory
If Pedroia is out for any length of time, I would have to guess that Rutledge goes to 2B, Sandoval comes back up to play 3rd, and Marrero goes to the bench as the utility infielder. There's absolutely no depth.

Injuries are going to end up keeping him out of the Hall, unfortunately. He must hold the record for injuries running to first base. Sad!

In FWAR, he's already ahead of Bobby Doerr, Red Schoendienst and Nellie Fox, maybe more second basemen that are already in, and more than 10 behind Cano. Doerr missed one year because of WWII. Pedey's got the ROY and MVP. I'd like to see Pedey add at least another 10-15.

Really unbelievable that the only day all 9 Opening Day starters have started has been ... Opening Day. That despite the fact that the leader for most starts at each position has been the Opening Day starter (Marrero is now joint leader with Panda at 3B with 16 starts). Now even if Panda comes back this week we'll likely have Pedey out.

Hopefully just a sprain, see how he respond soon the next few days before deciding on a DL stint. Worst-case scenario would probably be a non-displaced scaphoid fracture, which could be missed on an X-ray but show up on an MRI. That would entail 6-10 weeks of cast/splint, depending where the bone is actually broken

Hopefully it's just a sprain

I worry that this will linger into one of those situations where, in august sometime, we see a comment in an article explaining Pedroias lack of run production with a phase like "it's bothered him since he initially sprained it on Memorial Day"

You come into spring training with a healthy Pedroia, Holt, and Hernandez feeling pretty damn good about things...

I'm pretty bearish on this based on what we've seen from Dustin in the past. He may comeback but the production is going to suffer

X-rays done in Chicago but Pedroia wanted to go back to Boston for MRI via Red Sox medical team since he feels more comfortable with them-DD

Why couldn't Pedroia have the MRI in Chicago and then have the results read by the Sox doctors he trusts in Boston? What's the reasoning behind having the MRI itself performed in Boston? Maybe if he's for sure going to be out at least several days, it doesn't matter.

Edit: I'm assuming they can email/upload/somehow transmit the MRI results electronically to Boston from Chicago.

Don't assume it's easy for MRIs to be uploaded/transmitted - they are huge files and there are significant HIPPA obstacles to just emailing/uploading them.

Also, it makes sense to be physically examined by the person interpreting the MRI. It really helps to interpret if a subtle radiographic finding is at all clinically relevant.

Lastly, Pedroia (unfortunately) has a long track record with the Sox' hand specialist. They have a great relationship, it doesn't surprise me at all that Pedroia is coming back

Maybe this could actually be a good thing if it's on the less severe end of the spectrum of possibilities-- ~2-3 weeks on the shelf. It seems like he's still bothered by the knee injury from the Machado slide, so maybe a couple weeks on the DL will allow that injury to heal up. Ironically, after years and years of ill advised head first slides into first it looked like he hesitated on sliding headfirst (someone finally told him to cut the shit?) and that lead to the awkward tumble he took.

When my son's x-rays from a Bellevue hospital were needed at Seattle Children's, they burned a disc and put the disc into a taxi.

I doubt this will prove to be a good thing in any way, but I am a pessimist when it comes to injuries to Red Sox players.

I don't think it was any sort of indecision about sliding or not that led to the collision/tumble, it was all down to where Abreu ended up in his slide to the bag. He put himself in Pedey's running path to where Pedey couldn't avoid him. Any appearance of hesitation was him trying to find a way to avoid Abreu. Ultimately, it's the pitcher's fault for being so late getting over to cover that Abreu had to do what he did to get the out.

Merloni said it was an unathletic move on Pedey's part and speculated he might be playing with an undisclosed knee ailment because he couldn't jump over Abreu.

Did Loomer take into account the idea that Pedroia might have also been considering trying to touch first base amid the hoopla.

Huh? Abreu was sprawled all over the place---did Loomer want Pedey to be a psychic & then play hopscotch?

Jen McCaffrey Retweeted MLB Network Radio

Farrell on MLB Network Radio indicating this isn't a long-term injury for Pedroia. Headed back to Chicago today.
Definition of long term? Way to go out on a limb, Farrell or Jen (not to shoot the messenger, Paul). It's his left wrist; hadn't seen that mentioned.

Edit, there's the 10 day post from Red.

There have been a few "only a few days" injuries in the Farrell regime that have lasted quite a while. Hope he's being candid this time.

Is that supposed to be a knock against Pablo? I don't know about you but I'd rather have Panda's bat on the 25-man than whatever non-Devers replacement AAA can barf up. I get that he hasn't been great this year but he's hit for some power and seemed to be coming around before the knee thing.

Just looking at some 10-game logs (I know, 10 games does not even 1/16th of a season make) indicates they're going to need some people to step up in Pedroia's absence:

Bradley: 5/31 = .161
Marrero: 6/31 = .193
Betts: 8/40 = .200
Benintendi: 8/34 = .235
Leon: 7/32 = .219

That's 4 starters in mini-slumps...with Sandoval soon to join.

Fine, let him spell Hanley and be a bad DH or a late inning offensive replacement, but I really don't want to see him with a glove on ever.
