R-Dub: Time Lord, Tantalizing Sleeper, or Just a Late Flier?

This is a true statement, but also annoys me because I liked seeing "The Tantalizer" so much whenever I checked the board.
I'm with "The Tantalizer" too. If Williams comes in, shows all kinds of promise, but just doesn't put it together, Tantalizer is perfect. There have been scores of Sleeper picks, but not many Tantalizers.

How many of those scores slept through their introductory team phone call?

I don't have any of that data, but I'm sure someone on this board will put a chart together.
Ainge's track record of drafting those with questionable maturity who quickly exhibit these traits are not good.

Gerald Green - Falling asleep during a one-on-one film study with Ainge.
Fab Melo - Unable to get through a photo shoot without falling through a chair.
Robert Williams - Future Mattress Firm endorser?

Like most of the rest of you, I have a lot of love for what the Celts are doing on and off the court. As BobWill's PC was wrapping up today he was asked about his supposed low motor. While the kid is a slow talking, laid back, small town southern boy, he answered that he has, can and will work hard. Ainge piped in to wrap up the PC, "“It’s hard to have a low motor and be Defensive Player of the Year for two years in a row in a tough conference,”.

I know it seems like a small thing but when you're trying to guide people in a direction, tone is vital.

What are the odds that he's embracing his role as the anti-... whoever that Twitter GM was?

Of course, he'll never tell.

Yeah, not looking good early on. Hopefully he gets his act together quickly. Maybe he should hire a planner.

Hey Jaylen,

Need a roomie?
it's striking that pretty much everyone on the team is a hard worker other than Williams. I'm trying to go down the roster in my head and think of someone that's even close to lazy. All the starters and primary backups are freakish competitors.

Who is representing this cat? I’m 31 and my folks would still make sure I was like 3 hours early for any flight if I let them know my itinerary ahead of time. And nobody is depending on me getting somewhere on time.

That said, dude needs to get it together ASAP.

I mean I forget everything too but I also have ADHD so I set 9 million reminders in my phone.

Does his phone not have that ability?

We need to call Iyanla.

I don't think any of this necessarily means his work ethic will suck on the court, it just means he needs a swift kick in the ass like many 20 year olds do.

Yeah when you can't get on a flight has no bearing on if he can figure out timing in NBA offense

Seriously though this isn't a great start, you had to hope that his collapse in the draft would have given a kick in the ass. Esp as it's to do with shit like this

Interesting question: can you discipline a player that’s not under contract?

He’s a lottery ticket for a reason. It seems like he needs it drilled into him that being a professional extends to everything you do, not just the effort in the gym and on the court. I’ll worry if stuff like this is still happening 6 months from now.

Has he met with Horford yet? Because a sit down with him and other members of what is probably a great locker room would help set him straight from the start. Smart would be another good guy to talk to if he re-signs. And some older ex-Celts who can wax poetic about Celtic pride and tradition like maybe Bird/Parish/Cowens.

This is nothing that 10 days of unsupervised supervision in Las Vegas shouldn't cure. I mean, what could possibly go wrong out there?

You deserve this moment, enjoy it.

Its been a while since Danny hasn't drafted a high motor guy with his first pick (Smart, Rozier, Brown, Tatum). Fab Melo was also defensive POY in the Big East his final season.

So Williams is in Boston on Friday for the presser, is expected to be here on Sunday and doesn't stick around? For 48hours he could have stuck himself in the gym, done some windmill dunks on the court, and found a decent apartment for the next few seasons.

On the bright side, the Red Claws have found their center for the upcoming season.

The traffic to Maine on Friday would have been unbearable.

It’s not good, but I don’t think it’s awful either.

Oversleeping a call the night after the most important night of his life is not that big of a deal. If there was ever a time to excuse oversleeping that was it. Basically I write that event off altogether.

Missing this flight then is strike 1 for me. Now it’s time to take action, but don’t connect it to the earlier event - treat it on its own.

Williams was DPoY twice. Has there been any indication he has a low motor? He might just be a shithead off it. We’ll see.

He is penciled in as their #4 or 5 Center (welcome back Guershon). Bob probably had Maine in his future anyways so it's not really impactful. BUT the Boston media will be asking Danny/Brad/fellow players this week, next week and all season about this kids motor/attitude/tardiness/etc. Unnecessary distraction.

Let's see what we have in Vegas/pre-season, maybe the talent is there. We can move him into the apartment next to Brandy Tatum. She can babysit him.

My thread title suggestion: "What About Bob?"

Of course it's still possible the Celtics don't actually sign him. Bob Will would have to really fuck up though.

I don't know, I think the oversleeping was a big deal. What other draftee overslept his press conference? It wasn't an insurmountable thing, but it certainly should've been a... wait for it... huge wake up call for this guy.

So how does he show the C's that was a one-time screw up and he's ready to work? A week later he misses a flight and practice. I mean, come on.

He's a superfluous player on the '18-'19 team, and I don't begrudge Ainge drafting him. His talent upside may be worth the risk that he doesn't have the maturity to stick in the NBA. But that risk seems to be increasing by the day.

Yeah, the constant "big deal he overslept" makes it sound common. To the contrary, if it's so understandable, why is virtually (or literally?) every other draftee in memory able to get up. And add on the missed flight/practice....let's just say the teams that passed on him are hardly feeling worried right now that it'll bite them in the ass.
