R-Dub: Time Lord, Tantalizing Sleeper, or Just a Late Flier?

Who is representing this cat? I’m 31 and my folks would still make sure I was like 3 hours early for any flight if I let them know my itinerary ahead of time. And nobody is depending on me getting somewhere on time.

That said, dude needs to get it together ASAP.
Just about any 22 year old with aspirations of a career as an NBA support staff would be thrilled to have "woke up Celtics draft pick for meetings" on their resume for 32k per year.

Hell, make her a cute recently graduated sorority girl and you can meet all her friends.

Get it done Robert, you don't have to do this yourself!

Btw, I second the questions about his representation. Vinny Chase hired his fuck up friends and they still got him squared away!

I’m sure it wasn’t your intent, but the bolded part comes off creepy as hell.

It actually occurred to me that R-Dub might benefit from having an entourage. My 20-year old self couldn’t have handled the responsibilities he suddenly has; being a minor celebrity with money to burn only would’ve made matters worse. But if five of my buddies were living with me, and their meal ticket depended on getting me to my engagements on time, they would’ve made sure I showed up.

Well, his assistant coach is now living with him along with someone else so he has a mini entourage.

He bumped knees with someone. They're calling it a contusion or a bruise. Sounds like they are just being cautious.

apparently it's the same knee that he has some tendonitis in.

there are reports that he slid in part because he has knee issues. I have not been able to find out what these issues could be.

I'm just hoping none of this is substantive.

Sources: Boston Celtics rookie Robert Williams has artery condition in his legs
LAS VEGAS -- Boston Celtics rookie Robert Williams has an artery condition in both of his legs, multiple sources tell MassLive.

A source described the condition as, "not too serious." It could, however, require a procedure if it were to degenerate down the line.

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES), the vascular disease Williams has been dealing with, is found most often in athletes. Because of where the muscles and tendons around Williams' knee are positioned, they end up compressing the "popliteal artery," the main one behind the knee, restricting blood flow to the lower leg. It can lead to cramping and calf pain during exercise, per Johns Hopkins Medicine.

NBA teams, including the Celtics, were aware of Williams' condition at the time of the draft -- as was Texas A&M, where Williams went to college. The rookie has been playing with the condition for years, sources told MassLive. The L.A. Clippers' doctors performed his predraft physical and disseminated results to other organizations upon request, standard procedure for a prospect. The Celtics have also done their own physicals on Williams.

The team will regularly monitor his PAES. There are no signs at this time of it getting any worse than it's previously been, per multiple sources.

The surgery for the condition sounds like it has a high success rate:
Surgery to relieve abnormal compression of the artery is performed in two approaches. In some types of PAES, a 4- to 6-inch incision behind the knee can provide the necessary exposure to relieve the popliteal artery. In other PAES types, a 4- to 6-inch incision along the inner side of the calf is required for complete relief ...

The vast majority of our patients recover fully from their surgery and have normal blood flow to the leg immediately. We will further assess the blood supply at four to six weeks after surgery with ultrasound imaging.

Interesting, I wonder if some of the reputation for effort issues stems from chronic pain. Seems like it’s been part of his life since college. Doesn’t explain missing the interview/flight etc. of course...

Well unless he gets a Gronkfection, or has some other later date Kyrieomplication.

He has missed 2 summer league games. In the one he did play 5 mins in he flashed as one of the best players on the floor. Give the kid a week and see where he is at.

Surgeries are kinda big deals. Even the minor ones, No reason to do it if its manageable. If it becomes unmanageable then its great that it seems relatively minor.

I’ve never seen such a complete destruction of my ability to talk myself into a rookie being a future star. Which is funny because of course he could be but this has been as anti climactic a start as I could imagine. It’s like a how to book on killing momentum and sentiment

Yup. Hopefully none of this is remembered in a matter of months as he’s giving us 10-15 high energy mpg off the bench but right now my buzz is gone.

It’s funny that you guys talked me into liking this pick (which I initially didn’t), and now y’all are having second thoughts.

Maybe someone else who was available at 27 will become the next Draymond Green, but ex ante, the opportunity cost of whiffing on that pick seems low. Once Danny didn’t trade up, I was kind of surprised he didn’t grab a stashable European to ease the pressure on this year’s payroll (though if Smart returns on the QO, we’ll be fine).

The Celtics always have the option to move MaMo, regardless of the contract Smart ends up signing. And if you're willing to essentially punt on the pick, due to the team being stacked with both stars and rotation guys, why not take a flier on a guy with tons of upside?

RW looks like he needs a year of finishing school with the Red Claws. And besides, Maine is might be eligible to join the EU, which would raise medical coverage to Irish levels.

The difference between R-Dub and a Euro prospect we wouldn’t see until at least 2019 wouldn’t be worth prematurely losing MaMo’s services. As noted, however, it looks like that’s a non-issue.

I’m back to where I was before you guys talked me up — I wish the C’s had moved up to get someone who was more likely to become the cost-controlled rotation player that teams subject to the luxury tax desperately need, but if we were going to stay at 27, R-Dub is as good a flier as any so long as his salary isn’t forcing us to skimp elsewhere. And with Baynes back, he’s unlikely to play as big a role on the 2018-19 team as we were anticipating on draft night.

We'd have to consider it. Have to have Great Britain comeback so we could have BBC Portland.

Declaring him a bust after 5 minutes of summer league action seems a bit premature. Thankfully, Ainge likely has more patience.

Looks like more details have emerged about RWill's leg condition (the chronic one, not the knee contusion he recently suffered).

https://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2018/07/sources_boston_celtics_rookie.html

In addition to tendinitis in his left knee, he has Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES). This is when the muscles and tendons around the knee compress the "popliteal artery," the main one behind the knee, restricting blood flow to the lower leg & leading to cramping and calf pain during exercise. He has been playing with it for years, and apparently it's not considered very serious.

He's 20.
20 year olds lose shit. Especially ones who, like big time college basketball players, have spent years getting shit free.

NCAA basketball is a fucked up world. But maybe there's a reason that Tatum (Duke) and Brown (Cal) had their shit more together than the Aggie when they entered the NBA.

My 22-year old -- who didn't get shit for free -- loses a lot less shit now than she did 2 years ago.

I read or heard somewhere "Some people mature. Some just collect birthdays." I'm not ready to start shitting on a non-criminally behaving 20 year old. There'll be plenty of time for that.

I too am on the Bob Will Band wagon. If he turns out to be something great. if not....who cares. Its not like we wasted a lottery pick.

So question for the BB Peeps, How often has a rookie NOT played (at all, or very little due to choice or injury) in the Summer league then added value to his NBA roster? Any Rookies of the year candidates? Year 1? Year 2?I ask cause I really dont know.

I really think part of the frustration with this kid is that he cant watch him in basically meaningless games against inferior competition and have collective (if minor) sploogefests the following mornings on Sosh.

I get it I was excited too.

If he was putting up 10pts/10 Rebounds/3 Blocks in SL would any of us care he lost something or slept late. Sure we would say "he needs to grow up......this is the perfect roster for him to do just that" and that would be the end of it.

Besides injury (Tendinits and PAES) which the Celts certainly knew about and figured they were minor enough or manageable enough to chance, is there any reason to think he wouldnt be putting up that stat line? His first (and only) 5 mins showed me as much.

I saw a glimpse of what appeared to be explosive leaping ability in those 5 short minutes. Not just getting up high, but getting up there quickly. The smooth mid range jumper was also a nice tease since I was under the impression he didn't have that. Those 2 things alone keep me optimistic. A 20 year old being irresponsible doesn't bother me much. That can be fixed.

The five minutes I watched, I really liked what I saw. I liked how he moved when covering littles on switches on the perimeter, and I like how he challenged shots. Once he gets healthy and gets Stevens-ed, we're going to see some inspiring play from him in small doses in pre-season.

Or he might be a total disaster and never get on the court. However, from what I've seen from Yabu this summer, if Williams can just get with the program, he's got enough ability to beat that slug out for 14th man. And I was a Yabusele fan.

Same. I have been thoroughly unimpressed with the latter. He shows glimpses of explosion on offense occasionally and sometimes a nose for rebounds. But most of the time, he looks like he just crawled off the trainer's table. The game is too fast for him.

In his brief stint, Williams looked like he belonged.

100% this. After squinting hard on Yabu for over a year, he has lost me as a fan. His $2.6M this year could have been spent better elsewhere. He's a foul machine on defense, one head fake and his momentum carries him into the opposing player. Plus he has no qualms launching 3pointers when there are better options.
His only value at this point is the club options the next 2yrs, but that's minimal. Danny needs to stick Yabu on eBay and find a sucker rebuilder to take him off our hands.

Nice longish article on RDub's hometown and family life: https://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2018/08/boston_celtics_robert_williams.html. One bit:

[His sister] Bri is happy to claim the credit for Williams' rise.

"I spent a lot of time outside with him," she said. "We had a very, very good childhood -- everything a kid could want, we got it. Toys, clothes, everything. But he would play with something for like two weeks, something new, then it was on the backburner. He loved basketball.

"He's very, very, very family oriented. It scares his agent that he's like that. I've never seen a kid like this. When it comes to people like, 'Oh, you're about to be in the NBA, you'll be able to get this or that,' the money and the fame? He doesn't care about that. As long as he can play basketball, he's okay. The only thing you can probably bribe him with and he'll be happy with it is food. That's it."
