Had a subscription from the early 70's through the 80's. This is one of the first editions I had, and one of the more memorable ones. Now sitting somewhere in my parents' basement:

He *was* the best US NHL player for a long time.

And I think he was a bit more than "servicable." An 18 year career with 320 G and 728 pts (233rd all time; can't get a handle on where he was at retirement). I'm not sure there's any definition of "miss" that can reasonably include him.

Would you put him over LaFontaine for that era?

Post #4 nailed it. Even as a family that didn't get SI, this one had cultural penetration. I doubt any of the others except maybe some swimsuit covers had anywhere near that broad recognizability.
