They'd have to cut someone to bring up a player from Maine, though, right? Other than the two guys on 2-way contracts currently (Bird and Allen).
That's correct.

Does anyone know how many days left the 2-way guys have that they can play with the C's? I know they are capped at how long they can play with the team.

Well, this playoff run isn't looking to be as long as it once looked. A hobbled Kyrie, no Smart for a while, no Theis, no Hayward.
Once he went down, as big a deal as it is, they had no room for anymore significant injuries if they wanted to make a run at the Finals. That's not too realistic as we've seen in the last couple of weeks. Damn.

This is unreal. I can't remember a team so unlucky with injuries like this. And, as if they felt left out, half the Bruins are hurt now too. Awesome!

So Smart might have played his last game as a Celtic. Damn.
I actually think that this really means that the exact result you would have predicted vis a vis Smart and Rozier’s Celtics’ careers a couple of years ago is going to come to pass, for the exact opposite reason that you would have predicted then.

Rozier is hitting RFA status the summer that those crazy cap spike contracts start coming off the books, so he’s almost certain to draw a sub max, but still unaffordable by Boston luxury tax calculations, offer in free agency. Whereas Smart is hitting free agency with an injured hand in the worst possible summer.

So the odds are that Smart signs a three or four year MLE deal with an ETO for financial security, while I suspect that Boston gives a lot of consideration to trading Rozier this summer to maximize their return as they’re just not going to be able to justify $13-$15 million/year (plus luxury taxes) on Irving’s backup.

More or less.

I think it is still possible that some team steps in with a big money deal that Boston won't match. But that aside, he's likely back.

Rozier is the same age and has more marketable skills than Smart. Along with the salary cap situation, he's going to have plenty of teams after him. His competition for a long term contract in Boston is not Smart, it's Kyrie. But Rozier, impressive as he is, is no Kyrie.

Ainge's options with Rozier then, are:

1. Keep him until he becomes too expensive, then let him walk. This is the best option for 2018-19 plus provides some cheap Kyrie insurance in the event that Kyrie's knee is a bigger problem than we realize.
2. Deal him this offseason, when he's a great value for a year and then can be long-termed by the acquiring team.

Option #2 looks better if Smart returns.

The one element of this I haven't quite firgured out is how trades might come into play. The Celtics right now are full of max guys and cheap guys, with no intermediate level deals that would factor into salary cap matching for a big ticket pick up (eg, Davis). Smart and Rozier could both be signed and then factor into a deal for Davis or some other star.

Three years for Smart at $30M (starting at 9M and ending at 11M) with an opt-out in year 3 would be a pretty fair deal for both sides.

That's a bit more than either the QO or MLE, with only one extra year of team control, so Marcus would get some guaranteed money and a crack at UFA following his age 26 or 27 season.
