This could, and should, have been what happened a decade ago. Quite a contrast.

You can read the whole statement here (and probably other places too).

The statement is pretty great. Apparently the Yankees were not fined for the YES camera allegations but instead because "we learned that during an earlier championship season (prior to 2017) the Yankees had violated a rule governing the use of the dugout phone." That sure seems like a "don't snitch" fine to me if ever there was one.

Also, I note that the NYT blurb on the story mentions that the Red Sox were fined and utterly omits any mention of the Yankees fine.

How I've longed for this moment Red Sox. The day when I would have the proof I needed to haul you out of your cushy lair and expose you to the light of justice as the monster that you are. A monster so vile....

Yep. By also fining the Yankees for some random old dugout phone violation, Manfred is essentially saying, "Both of you guys have been using technology illegally to gain a minimal advantage forever, so cut the shit." And by donating the fines to Hurricane victims, Manfred is almost explicitly saying he is going to focus on things that actually matter.

This is a rather brilliant troll job by Manfred, me thinks.

Could not agree more.

The contrast between Manfred's actions and the breathless predictions of firings, player releases and suspensions on the first page of this thread are pretty hilarious.

I think he's also sending a message that he'd rather not be dragged into this sort of thing and that the clubs should have dealt with each other directly first.

Well, I think they should have to forfeit that Championship. At the very least, you have to put an asterisk next to it.

This is exactly what this punishment is for. Not so much for the transgression, but for airing MLB's dirty laundry. The message isn't don't use electronic devices to steal signs. The message is either don't go looking for it or don't get caught.

Oh, before I forget.. 2009*.

Maybe I'm missing a joke, but it seems that a few posters think "championship season" means a season where the Yankees won the world series. That language is simply how MLB refers to any normal season - is all over the rule book and every other official MLB document. It's far more likely that they caught the Yankees illegal electronics use from 2016 than it is that they were looking back to 2009 or earlier.

Edit: the more I think about it, the more I think I should assume I'm missing a couple jokes... Oh well, I'll blame the beers...
