I'm sort of not buying the endorsement loss as well. Sounds more like something you would say to Fox to make your trials and tribulations into a more impressive narrative about faith and redemption than something that actually happened.

But hey, what do I know?

After reflection I think I agree with someone up thread who said it more eloquently than I could: I never minded him as a football player - a great college one, a bad pro one - but the phenomenon is what continues to grate on me. YMMV.

He is going bananas on your podcast and your goalie play on the Sons of Reidel Anthony board.

Do we even know what the endorsement was? What if it was the pro-life part 2 commercial that would have caused a media ruckus that BB didn't want?
I'm assuming the pro-life stuff he did for free. If he's charging a million bucks to get on TV and do ads advocating against abortion, that's kind of messed up. But even if it was something like that, why would it matter if he was on the Pats, and why wouldn't the offer have still been on the table after he was cut?

If Tebow had been offered an endorsement when he came to camp with the Pats, it would have fallen into one of two categories: (1) someone looking to get an endorsement from Tim Tebow "the phenomenon", in which case it would not have mattered if he was on the Pats or any other NFL team, or (2) a situation (like maybe a Dunkin commercial or something) where the endorsement only made sense if Tim Tebow was a member of the New England Patriots. Considering that Tebow was by that time (a) on his third NFL franchise, (b) just cut by the Jets who didn't exactly have a ton of great QB options on the roster ahead of him and (c) a good bet to get cut by the Pats during training camp, what company in that situation is just going to give him a million bucks to endorse something, and not make it conditional on him at least making the roster out of camp or something? Or why not just wait to see if he makes it? Tebow having an offer out there that was pulled after he got cut makes zero sense.

I don't want to go so far as to say he made up the story, because I have nothing against Tebow and I'd like to think he wouldn't do something like that, but it sure sounds like a convenient way to talk about how he was willing to give up a whole bunch of money to pursue his dream (and he has no regrets and he'd do it again!). And even though he's not saying it, it allows everyone reading the story who already hates Bill Belichick to hate him even more for telling Tebow to leave the million bucks on the table right before he cut him.

A marginal player asks a notoriously hardass coach for a day off from training camp (where presumably he should be doing everything possible to make the team)....to shoot a commercial?

How fucking stupid can someone be? It would be fair to question that player's commitment to football at that point. Tebow was listed as the 3rd QB that entire preseason, he should have been under no illusions as to the security of his roster spot.

to be fair....I was guessing at the "asked for time off." I haven't actually seen that anywhere. But that's the only real reason I could think of BB advising against it.

According to the Deadspin article, Tebow described the commercial as a "one-day commercial," which to me sounds like needing to be excused for one day from camp.

In the interview linked in the Yahoo story, it doesn't sound like he's asking for time off. He explains that he called BB asking for "advice" because he "didn't want to be a distraction" and BB's answer was that he "preferred he didn't do it". I don't take that to mean that he was asking for a day off from practice to shoot a commercial.

Then that whole thing is weird and Tebow is being obtuse. Unless the commercial involved losing his virginity to a member of the Belichick family, why would Tebow ask BB advice about something in the future like that. I dont know that it's a day off, or some time, but it seems like unless there was some affect on training camp, there would be no need to ask.

The excerpt from his book is here:

Doesn't really shed much light on it, except it was a one-day commercial shoot. Doesn't say he was asking to be excused from practice, does suggest that once he said no to the one-day opportunity it was gone forever.

I still think this doesn't really add up for any number of reasons, but who the hell knows.

I completely believe that even if it didn't involve him being absent from practice that, if asked, BB might have told him that he would appreciate it if Tebow didn't do the commercial. But I find it odd that whoever wanted Tebow for a one-day commercial and was willing to pay him a million dollars to do it wasn't still interested once he got cut.

Maybe it was a scissors or band-aid commercial?

Look, if the Nigerian Prince didn't get a place to send the money that day, he was going to get robbed of it. If Tim Tebow were such a good christian, he'd help a guy in need like that!

In conclusion, Bill Belichick hates Good Samardzijans or something.
