Thanks, I put  an order in, and will have to see if it goes through when I pick up at the store.

I can confirm that the Micro Center $10 discount code works on items less than $50. I bought a $12 fan for $2.

Indeed, I got a $14.50 internal DVD burner drive for $4.50. The heads-up is much appreciated.

Acer Asprire TC-605 desktop       $400
Decent prebuilt i5 (3.1 Ghz), HDMI video, 4 Gb ram, 500 Gb HD, 300w PS Win 8.1 x64

Mushkin Enhanced Reactor 1 Tb SSD      $350

Thermaltake Level 10 GT case   after $30 rebate = $130
The 'uncase', hard to describe modular, it's a deconstruction of the concept of a case, more like an open breadboard framework. Useful for the inveterate techie, but can be argued defeats some of the reasons you use a case at all, rarely on sale.

Thermaltake 850W 80 Plus Gold PS    after $20 rebate = $80
A legit 850 Gold Plus quality PS, more than pretty much anyone will need, even running a pair of high end video cards, way overkill in power and quality for most builds.

ESET Smart Security   $15

Question. I want to buy a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit license. On Newegg and Amazon, the price I find ranges from $100-110 to $130.

On ebay however and on some other websites, I find some other deals that are significantly cheaper. One on Ebay has it on sale for $70. Another just sells the key for $36. Those seem questionable to me.

Does anyone any idea what's the catch with all those sales. What would the cheapest legitimate way to buy a license?

I never see a legit 7 Pro x64 license on sale for less than $90, and most places only sell 7 Home Premium, rarely Pro and never Ultimate, there is a very slight chance the $70 is legit OEM, but no guarantee it hasn't already been used, you didn't give a link, as for the $36 key only, you might as well save the $36 and pm me for an explanation of how to use the Daz loader......

LOL, interesting, they have carefully placed the label to cover the portion of the CD in the photo that reveals this is a distribution for their Regestered Refurber Program.  This install is supposed to be used ONLY by licensened Microsoft refurb companies to reload a fresh version onto rebuilt machines. The CD is, therefore...legit, but selling it to you is...not. This is comparable to dealers who sell OEM copies (which are identical) to someone naked (you're supposed to buy at least a bare motherboard...the minimum hardware to justify selling an OEM).  Once installed it will be legit for all intents and purposes. Microsoft should be throttling ACI Computer for this abuse, but probably haver stopped giving a shit and ACI probably has a substantial stack of these to dump.  $70 is cheaper than you will ever find it, and Pro or Ultimate are the versions you want. Good deal.

It is a great deal considering it also gives free upgrade to Windows 10. I have come across an Amazon review however which says you need to be a registered business with microsoft otherwise, you can't activate it.

While the seller is selling a genuine Microsoft product, most individuals will not be able to use it. The requirements by Microsoft to activate this product with the included Certificate of Authenticity are that you are a member of Microsoft's refurbisher program. In order to become a member, you are required to register a BUSINESS that will be refurbishing the computer. Microsoft will not register an individual. Most people have not heard of Microsoft's refurbisher program. The page selling this item plainly displays a COA with a normal Product key on it. The included COA I received only had a serial number, therefore I would have to activate it through the refurbisher program. The Product Description and Product Features section of the page stated where to find the Product key, indicating that the Product key would be included. The page was designed to indicate that any individual would have everything needed to activate this copy of windows, but this isn't true. I contacted the seller and he apologized, but stated that the page plainly stated that only a Microsoft refurbisher would be able to activate this product. I had intended to let it go, but still needing a legal copy of windows, I looked on a popular auction site. All the lowest priced copies of Windows 7 pro were also "Intended for distribution with a refurbished PC". Every single one of these pages indicated that a Product key would be included. My further reading indicated that some COA's for refurbished PC software would have the Product key on the COA, but mainly the refurbisher was responsible for including the key with the computer after getting it from Microsoft during the activation process. After reading all of this info, I was convinced that I had been mislead on purpose. I have requested that I be able to return this for a refund and it was authorized. If you are an authorized or listed system refurbisher, this version of Windows is fine, but unless you are willing to jump through all of Microsoft's hoops to get it activated, then please don't buy a copy of Windows "intended to be distributed with a refurbished PC".

That explains it, they are not furnishing a completed COA, which would alert MS exactly who sold this. There are ways to activate, but it would not be with a legit key...so it's a scam if you want a truly legit copy.
MS has already announced that 'upgrade to 10' will be free for at least 1 year from ANY legit copy of 7, 8 or 8.1 (after that no prices have been even suggested).  As it stands there's a fair shot 10 may actually be worth considering as they are correcting most of the idiocy of 8, and besides Classic Shell is already developed to work with the betas of 10, have yet to hear of the 'gotcha' that will make 10 unpalatable.

Nick, do you want the Win 7 license for a completely new build or for a VM install, or is it something else like your existing Win 7 PC needs repair?

Yeah, the thing is those guys at ebay have more than 700 positive feedback and I doubt all of those people hold a refurbishing license.

Windows 10 seems legit to me. I ve actually downloaded it when it came out and it seemed fine to me, although I didn't see a killer app that would want me to upgrade from Windows 7 immediately. I did do a Win 8 installation a couple of months ago and it was as bad as people said it was. Windows 8 was indeed counterproductive for the desktop usage. Windows 8.1 made it useable again. But all in all, you basically had to spend a good chunk of time in order to figure out what was going on and then try to mold it back to your liking.

So what is the problem you are trying to solve. Did the Win 7 install on the old hard drive lose its "activated" status when moved to the laptop?

That's what Classic Shell does, once you wade thru it's configuration, you wind up with exactly the combo of XP and/or Win 7 features and look you find most comfortable.

Yeah, you do and yet get annoying popups, you lose your wallapaper etc.

Actually, I shelled the big bucks for Start8. :buddy: But still, there was a time consuming learning curve that was unnecessary.

You can recover the Win 7 license keycode from that hard drive via Magical Jelly Bean. Of course, if you had a manufacturer-supplied keycode from the original PC (e.g., an HP) and you've "crossed the streams" and put it into a different manufacturer's laptop (e.g., Dell), that keycode likely won't successfully activate. If it's a retail/generic keycode, you should be fine. If you don't have the CD-ROM disc for Win 7, you can even download the .ISO file from Microsoft now.

I never see Pro or Ultimate on sale, MS assumes if you want/need them you're a business/enterprise user and can be soaked for more...period.

Ok, just talked to the guy, he confirmed the software is part of the refurbishing program, but he assured me that it's going to work regardless and if there's an issue, he ll either clear this up with microsoft or give me another product key.

I think it's legit.

Yes, it's likely legit = it will work. I am sure Microsoft would dispute it being legit under their licensing terms

We're back to what I said before: it's a 'legit' copy, the guys who are selling it to you are indisputably violating the terms of how they are supposed to utilize such copies. If MS allows you to authenticate the install, then what I said earlier has become true: MS has stopped giving a shit about Win 7 and is just happy with the revenue from product like this sitting out there. With Win 10 going to be free for almost everyone (except the die hard XP user base), one assumes their income projections going forward are based on rather different assumptions.

Well, the thing is, I use the vm and the laptop so rarely that I can probably tolerate the annoying messages to activate. Which means that even this price point is higher than I think it's worth and that microsoft is probably earning income that  wouldn't otherwise get.

Acer AXC-605-UR2B desktop i5 Quad     $400

http://flash.newegg.com/Product/N82E16883103978

Just about the cheapest way into a legit i5 Quad cpu in a brand new box. The small formfactor is often used to package i3 dual core cpus, making these disguised laptops. Here you get an i5-4440 Quad (3.1 Ghz), 4 Gb ram, 1 Tb 7200 rpm HD,  DVD burner, HDMI video out, smartcard reader, Gig ethernet, front panel USB 3.0 and Win 7 Home Premium x64.

All you can do is add a second stick of ram, the 2 expansion slots are both "mini PCIe" that means bracket and card are limited to half height, which eliminates 90% of all PCIe cards (including virtually any video card) and besides the 200w PS would probably have issues....

What's in this box is current and decent, no way you can stuff anywhere near this into any box on your own for this price, even without the OS. Amazon wants $490 for this today.

Remarkably little of real interest in this promotion:

Apropos of the recent search of a bargain in Win 7 Pro x64, you need a promo code to get a legit OEM copy for 'only' $120.

The LG 34UM95-P is a monster 34" 21:9 3440x1440 IPS monitor at $750 is a great price...if you have the video cards to support such a device. Reviews are decent but be aware LG only

This is getting almost silly...why buy an SSD today when someone will be selling it for less sometime in the next 2 weeks ? May as well wait... educated guess at the floors: 128 Gb SSD will wind up at $50 and 240/256 SSDs will wind up at $75-79 for the good brands, which makes buying 2nd tier brands a really stupid economy...you want Samsung, Intel, Crucial, OCZ ...pretty much anything that's not using an older generation Sandforce controller and quality nand.

Yeah, we both know they are not doing board level repairs on these, they are simply replacing the single board inside returns, and with a 1 year warranty IRL that's as good as anyone really needs to expose natal defects. Hard Drive prices never dropped below $50 for anything new no matter what the size, and recertified mechanical drives have always been a crapshoot. Perhaps the floor for SSD will drop to $40, but I can't imagine anyone left in the business will want to even bother selling anything for less than that....
