The New New 2017 Draft Contest!

By popular demand (okay, I only got one email on it, but Pappymojo is popular, right?), it's back! Unlike last year, when the Pats had no 1, they now (at least as of today) have no 1 or 2. What does this mean? a) I'm highly unlikely to guess any of the draft picks correctly, and b) someone else will get a year's worth of bragging rights, and a charity will get some dough.

As in years past, here's the contest for 2017.

You get to name 20 players who you think the Pats will/might pick, plus the charity you think is most deserving of a contribution in your (screen) name. If you leave out a charity name, I'll plug in the Jimmy Fund/Dana Farber.

Scoring is just like previous years: three points for each player selected by the Pats in the first three rounds - 4 for round 4, 5 for round 5, 6 for round 6, 7 for round 7, and 8 pts for naming UDFAs signed by the Pats within 72 hours of the end of the draft. In a reprise of sorts from last year, 4 bonus points if a player on your list gets picked #118.

Free to enter, and bragging rights for whoever picks best - plus I'll donate $100 to the SoSH charity of choice in the name of whoever wins. In case you've forgotten, Eck's Sneaky Cheese is the reigning champ.

In the event of a tie, the earliest entry is the winner.

Looking forward to hearing what/who you think the Pats will add through the draft!

Thanks for getting us started! And you're right, seems like there aren't a lot of picks...and will this be the first year I can remember when a UFA doesn't make the team?

Quick request for all others - could you please enter your choices "last name, first name, everything else (position, school, why you like this person for the Pats, etc.) - it'll make it easier for me to keep up. ZMart, no need for you to change, I've got you covered. Good luck!

1 thank you for doing this again.
2 I am not popular.
3 I would actually expect quite a few undated free agents this year. The Pats have a bunch of open spots on their 90 man roster but only a few draft picks.
4 I will get my picks in later.

I believe that the Patriots only have 66 players under contract (not counting Gillislee). With seven draft picks, that would leave room on the 90 man roster for 17 more players.

Here are my picks

Walker, Demarcus, DE/OLB, Florida State
Kpassagnon, Tanoh, DE/OLB, Villanova
Hendrickson, Trey, DE/OLB, Florida Atlantic
Rivers, Derek, DE/OLB, Youngstown
Wise Jr., Deatrich, DE/OLB, Arkansas
Langi, Harvey, DE/OLB, BYU
McMillan, Raekwon, LB, Ohio State
Anderson, Ryan, LB, Alabama
Stribling, Channing, CB, Michigan
Murray, Najee, CB, Kent State
Jackson, Eddie, S, Alabama
Gerry, Nathan, S, Nebraska
Pocic, Ethan, C, LSU
Morgan, Jordan, OG, Kulztown
Davenport, Julie'n, OT, Bucknell
Seaton, Brad, OT, Villanova
McDermott, Conor, OT, UCLA
Kittle, George, TE, Iowa
Auclair, Antony, TE, Laval
Perine, Samaje, RB, Oklahoma

Perine is probably a mistake to include as the Patriots don't really need a running back, and McMillan is probably a mistake to include as he will probably be drafted before the Patriots make a pick, but a person can't really choose their draft binkies.

It's probably due to not having a 1 or 2, but I have done less work on prospects this year than in any of the previous 5 years or so. And it feels great. Not having to tune into the first couple rounds of the draft feels even better. Now watch me nail this thing:

Update: 4/21
1. BUTT, Jake - TE Michigan
2. Anderson, Ryan- LB Alabama
3. McMillan, Raekwon- LB OSU
4. Jones, DJ- DL Ole Miss
5. Hunt, Kareem - RB Toledo
6. McNichols, Jeremy - RB Boise St
7. Taylor, Trent - WR LaTech
8. Tevi, Sam- OT Utah
9. Hodges, Bucky - TE VaTech
10. Skipper, Dan - OT Arkansas
11. Davenport, Julie'n - OT Bucknell
12. Pocic, Ethan- C LSU
13. Johnson, Jaleel- DT Iowa
14. Glasgow, Ryan- DT Michigan
15. Basham, Tarell- DE Ohio
16. Wise, Deatrich- DE Arkansas
17. Mathis, JoJo- LB Washington
18. Sutton, Cameron- CB Tennessee
19. Beckwith, Kendall- LB LSU
20. Tabor, Teez- CB Florida

I would be happy if he landed on the Patriots. I had him on my initial list but he didn't make the final cut. If the Bills don't match on Gillislee, I don't see much room with the Patriots for another RB.

Conner wrote a letter to NFL GMs in the Players Tribune. I'm a little bit surprised the Players Tribune published such an article because it's basically an advertisement for himself, but whatever, I like the guy and hope he has a successful career.

Edit: Created a separate thread to discuss the draft.

In the absence of any positive feedback (read: success) from my earlier attempts to guess at the Pats' draft, I've decided to change up my approach. I picked 3-4 positions where I think the Pats might look early - then broadened my search, emphasizing special teams and/or development potential - and then looked for the guys with the coolest names. That latter part might not be scientific, but how else would I have ended up with Ironhead Gallon on my list? Or the ability to imagine rooting for Michael Tyson or Weston Steelhammer or Samson (Ebukam) to go hit somebody? Or the Verdi takeoffs that could accompany a kick by Rigoberto (Sanchez. Warning - Rigoletto is a tragedy!).

Given my criteria, Jake Butt should be at the top of my list, but I decided a TE duo of Sprinkle/Butt was better than the alternative. Anyway...

Sprinkle, Jeremy - TE, Arkansas
Butt, Jake - TE, Michigan
Garcia, Antonio - OT, Troy
Sharpe, David - OT, Florida
Bisnowati, Adam - OT, Pittsburgh
Banner, Zach - OG, USC
Bullough, Riley - LB, Michigan State
Boulware, Ben - LB, Clemson
Steelhammer, Weston - S, Air Force
Tyson, Michael - S, Cincinnati
McQuay III, Leon - S, USC
Walker, DeMarcus - DE, Florida State
Williams, Marquez - FB, Miami
Ebukam, Samson - LB, Eastern Washington
Feeney, Dan - OG, Indiana
Milano, Matt - LB, BC
Sanchez, Rigoberto - K, Hawaii
Roulier, Chase - C, Wyoming
Rivers, Derek - DE, Youngstown State
Gallon, Ironhead - S, Georgia Southern

Further to...Now that I've reviewed the lists above mine - is it me, or is this draft deep in great names? In Eck's post alone, I see a Kpassagnon and a Smoot, the second coming of Barry Sanders, and the opportunity to root for Harvard's Rich...

Maine
Augusta, Josh - DT
Basham, Tarell - DE
Hendrickson, Trey - DE
Rivers, Derek - DE
Walker, Demarcus - DE
McMillan Raekwon - LB
Reeves-Maybin, Jalen - LB
Garcia, Antonio - OT
McDermott, Conor - OT
Tevi, Sam - OT
Kittle, George - TE
Leggett, Jordan - TE
Saubert, Eric - TE
Hodges, Bucky - TE
Shaheen, Adam - TE
Jones, Sidney - CB
Wilson, Brandon - CB
Wilson, Howard - CB
Lewis, Jourdan - CB
Tabor, Jalen - CB

Had a lot of WR & RB I thought were great fits for the Pats, but not so much after the Amendola and Gillislee deals.

EDIT: looks like I have far less original names this year, meaning I should do rather poorly. ;)

So - draft starts Thursday at 8:00 pm. Pending trades, there's not a lot of early-found drama for the Pats, so we don't need to close off too too early - but in fairness, we need a cut-off. So: please get your picks in (or edits in) before 6:00 pm Thursday April 27th...entries after that time won't be considered; no edits after that time either!

Quick update - through the end of the draft...

We have 11 entries, most with 20 picks. A total of 132 players were picked at least once, with 52 picked on two or more entries, and 23 mentioned three or more times. TE Bucky Hodges (Virginia Tech) and LB Raekwon McMillan (OSU) were the most popular picks, with five mentions each.

The Pats made four selections, two DEs (Rivers, Wise) and two OTs (Garcia, McDermott). Four of the 11 entries had Rivers, and three each had Garcia, McDermott and Wise.

Before we get into the UDFAs, pappymojo is in the lead with 13 points, followed by pxer at 12.

More when the UDFAs for the first 72 hours are finalized! If anyone has a link to a reliable source for these, please send it along...

Thanks, SSF! But y'know who's REALLY awsome - ZMart100 and Pxer.

Here are the six folks (culled from the UDFA frenzy thread) who appear to have confirmed contracts with the Pats

UDFAs #
Josh Augusta
Cody Hollister
Jacob Hollister
David Jones
DJ Killings
Jason Thompson

Nobody had Hollister, Hollister, Jones or Thompson. ZMart had both Augusta and Killings, and Pxer - who's now in the lead - had Augusta.

More (late-ish) tomorrow!

Interesting year as we didn't have to focus on the top 2 rounds, and the Pats really did stick to obvious positional needs in the draft.

Waiting on Max Rich and Damarius Travis confirmation...

The Globe has an article with more possible evidence that Rich signed, but the same twitter evidence originally from the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Travis intending to sign. Harvard Football has an article saying Rich signed.

Globe said:
After drafting just four players during the three-day draft, the Patriots signed 17 rookie free agents, including Harvard offensive tackle Max Rich and twin brothers, Cody Hollister, a wide receiver from Arkansas, and Jacob Hollister, a tight end from Wyoming.
[snip]
“I was excited and relieved — it was a long day,” Rich said Sunday when asked about his initial reaction to agreeing with the Patriots.
Pioneer Press said:
Later Saturday night, Travis told the Pioneer Press that he planned on signing with the New England Patriots
Harvard said:
Seniors Anthony Firsker and Max Rich of the Harvard football team have signed undrafted free agents with the New York Jets and New England Patriots, respectively, of the National Football League.

Okay, that seems pretty solid, I'll give you (and Eck) Rich, bringing you up to 24 points.

Anyone else have info that separates "signed" from "invited for a tryout?"

In the absence of better info, I'm using this list from CBS:

Austin Carr , WR, Northwestern Wildcats
Harvey Langi , LB, Brigham Young Cougars
Kenny Moore, CB, Valdosta State
David Jones , DB, Richmond
Jason Thompson , S, Utah Utes
Josh Augusta , DT, Missouri Tigers
Corey Vereen , DE, Tennessee Volunteers
Jason King, OL, Purdue
Jacob Hollister, TE, Wyoming
Cody Hollister, WR, Arkansas
Adam Butler, DT, Vanderbilt
Cole Croston, OL, Iowa
Max Rich, OL, Harvard
Damarius Travis, S, Minnesota
LeShun Daniels, RB, Iowa
D.J. Killings, CB, Central Florida
Dwayne Thomas, DB, LSU
D.J. Dean, CB, Arkansas

ZMart100 and pappymojo each got one of the newbies: ZMart got Travis, and pappy got Langi. Langi's getting most of the buzz, but ZMart got most of the points - 32, which is a record AFAIK. pappymojo ended up with 21, and Pxer with 20; everyone else was closer to my (single digit) tally.

Thanks to everyone for playing, and congrats, ZMart100! The Jimmy Fund (well, Dana Farber) is $100 richer too, so everybody wins.

I was just thrilled to get one this year with Wise - I think I've struck out multiple years I've done this in the past. ZMart getting FOUR undrafted free agents is absolutely unbelievable. You must have had some inside intel on the scouting process this year! Congrats. And thanks mwonow again for a fun contest and your generous donation.

Thanks! Doesn't change the final standings, though Brooks Ellis does add a notch (and 8 points) to Super Nomario's column
