From Mike Guardi, Boston Sports Journal:

The Pats' offensive coordinator search has generated little buzz league-wide:

"I can't stress enough how little buzz the Pats' offensive coordinator search has generated league-wide. Talking to league sources, there's a lot of hemming and hawing about the quality of the position. "Their best playmaker is a 6th round liliputian (Pop Douglas). Sure. Where do I sign up?" says one. Another added, "What does Mayo want them to be? I don't know that anyone knows the answer yet." And finally, "The job looks worse on paper than it did a year ago when Billy (O'Brien) took over. The QB (he was referring to Mac) can't play. They did what (?) with JuJu (Smith-Schuster) and Devante Parker (a sizeable contract for one, an extension for another)? They have some key free agents. It could be rough if they don't hit a home run in the draft." Some of the names they're spoken to, including Luke Getsy, drew shrugs from sources I've talked to here in Alabama."
I read this as folks that didn't get an interview. Lots of hires are going into tough spots, that's why they're open.

Some of the same media folks who screamed for a ‘wide open search’ for a new OC are now claiming they are nervous that there isn’t ‘a sense of urgency.’ Good times.

I can kind of see that, but honestly if I'm sitting 3 and hate the QBs, I want to trade down get more shots at blue chip guys, definitely not trade away any picks.
What is interesting to me is that we don’t have any idea who in the New England front office is going to decide whether they hate or like whatever QB is sitting at 3. Although we are reasonably sure that the GM of some team is absolutely going to like that QB enough to take them at 3, or at worst 4.

And the Patriots need a QB at least as much as any team in the league.

If BB was in charge I could imagine him saying Maye/Daniels not worth it and making the sort of trade you suggest. But he’s not and, whoever it is, I will be absolutely shocked if they don’t take QB3.
