Thoughts after Week 1 PS

deep inside Guido territory
Offense
--Malcolm Mitchell really flashed. He seems to be the outside WR threat that was sorely missed last year with LaFell's injury/ineffectiveness. Hopefully the dislocated elbow does not stunt his growth too much but I really liked what I saw out of him.

--None of the other WRs that played last night did much of anything to stand out. If it wasn't for Mitchell's injury and questionable status for Week 1, I'd say Aaron Dobson should be very nervous about his place on the team.

--Joe Thuney looks to be a starter at LG. He was a bright spot on an otherwise very spotty OL performance.

--Nate Solder was very rusty after missing most of last season. He got bull rushed a couple times and got flat out beat in others. Luckily, he has a couple more weeks to shake off any rust he has and become that reliable blind side guy.

--When it was starters vs. starters, the OL did a bad job of run blocking and an average job in pass protection at best. There were times the Saints were sending guys through the interior unblocked. That goes to a lack of communication.

--I thought Jimmy G was pretty good overall. I was looking for quick decision making and command of the pocket and the offense. He had to rush throws and take some sacks due to constant pressure in the 1st quarter, but when he got time to throw he read the defense and made quick decisions. He still needs a lot of reps to fine-tune things and hopefully he gets to work with guys like Edelman, Amendola, and Gronk more before Week 1.

--Martellus Bennett is going to be a very nice weapon. He is leaner than I remembered him being and that should play well in this high-octane offense. He got a lot of attention from the defense last night but that will change when the rest of the first unit is in the game.

Defense
--Jamie Collins is a total beast. He was everywhere last night. One minute he's catching a tipped INT and returning it 40 plus yards and the next play he's getting a TFL 5 yards in the backfield.

--Hightower is in clear control of the unit. He looks great.

--Loved the DL. The ends all flashed and the depth of the DT position is evident. It looks like they have enough depth at end to survive the short time Ninkovich is out.

--Coleman and C. Jones flashed. They are feisty and physical corners who are extremely aggressive.

--Shea McLellin looked pretty good at both rush end and outside backer. Consistency is an issue with him so we'll see if he can bring it every week.

--Everything as expected was very vanilla in terms of schemes and coverages.

Shea McClellian did flash some last night, that was good to see. They need the LBer depth. Though he pretty much lined up at the end of the line all night.

Chris Long had some good pass pressure. But I noted him losing the edge 2-3 times in the run game. I remember him losing contain at least once and getting blown out of a play from a pulling lineman which left a huge running lane. It's a tiny sample, but something to keep watching. I'd think they would hesitate to put him on the field as much if he can't effectively play the run.

Wasn't sure what to make of the interior line. I thought Andrews struggled some and Mason gave up 1-2 hurries/hits on the QB. But it did look like some free rushers/missed assignments, so that's really hard to know who messed up.

Going to be some hard cuts to get down to 53. It just looks like there is a lot of talent on the roster right now.

For those of us able to see highlights only...how did Flowers look besides the awesome Sack/Fumble/TD rumble play?

98 was in the Saints backfield more often than not. They had to chip him or double team him or he was getting consistent pressure.

Grugier-Hill was intriguing. He's safety sized and he gets all over the field well. I thought him calling the D plays spoke highly of how he's being viewed.

Jonathan Jones looked really good in coverage. Had a few nice plays against Thomas.

Jordan Richards on ST was a maniac.

Gaffney was impressive. Bolden might have the edge when cuts come because of his ST play but Gaffney could overtake him.

That pick by Cre'von was legit.

Mitchell was damn good. Routes were crisp and his awareness is pretty unreal for a rook in this system. Hope he's a quick healer.

OL as a whole outside from wunderkind Thuney looked poor. Outside OL looks thin. Plenty of bodies on the interior but I wish they addressed the Tackle spot more in the off-season. Solder looked awful. I wish I could chalk it up to rust but he's been trending downward for a couple years now. He can't handle even mediocre pass rushers anymore.

Bennett is going to be extremely valuable. Opposing secondaries are likely shitting themselves. Derby could make the 3rd TE competition interesting, but I still need to see my draft binkie Bryce Williams too.

Defensive starters are beastly. This unit, assuming health, is going to have a special year. Collins, Sheard, Hightower, Long, McClellin and Chung looked great.

After a pretty bad start, Jimmy G settled in nicely. IF the o-line can block he's going to do well.

Brissett looked good. He has a ways to go but I can see the draw to this kid. Big kid, cannon arm, decent wheels.

He was playing against the B/C team but was consistently in the backfield on many snaps disrupting the offense and generally being in the middle of things. Wasn't just that one play, he was a going concern for the time that he was in there.

Jones taking punts and kickoffs will be a plus. He'll take one all the way at some point.

James White is no Dion Lewis but if they're on the field together defenses will be very challenged to handle them both.

Seeing Develin back was nice, too.

Jimmy G got off to a brutal start against a defense not utilizing schemes he is going to see in Arizona. Some of this can be attributed to the pressure but he's going to also be facing that pressure come Week One. It was nice to see him get settled in so hopefully this was simply a result of him seeing game speed defenses for the first time since last August but that should be the bare minimum expectations. I'm not sold yet that Week One won't be a complete trainwreck especially considering he'll have zero pre-season game time with Gronk, and probably Edelman and Amendola as well.

Brissett I like a lot, liked him a lot at NC State, but he did play last night against guys who may be in the Arena League next year. He has NFL skills though no doubt.

Agree with all of the above.
JG looked rusty but worked his way out of it as the OL did him no favors. If this keeps up I wonder if they will gameplan in some moving pockets and rollouts to give him some more time?
Brissett looked like he belonged, which is something for a QB rookie in his first PS game. No idea how he pans out but he he could be something, which is what most rookie QBs are not.

I had a different impression of Jimmy. Without the top receivers and without an actual game plan, I think there is very little you can actually take away from that game. The one thing that I think does matter, is that for the most part he looked composed. He had an ill advised throw off the back foot across the middle and one sack he probably tried to do too much instead of just going down. But the game did not look like it was going too fast for him. He stood tall in the pocket and went through his reads. He even stood in there and made a couple throws knowing that he was going to get hit.

I'm taking his composure as a sign of growth and a positive going forward.

I was a little bit multi-tasking but, while JG did at times look like he was doing the best he could with questionable pass protection, I also thought he was doing a lot of 'snap...look middle...see first read and throw'.
He didn't telegraph his read, but I couldn't see that he was going through much progression. But, maybe that's just how preseason game 1 works. Just a thought.
