Rosenthal says they're scouting NY's AA team tonight, which can only be Mateo or Acevedo, both guys I'd hate to lose, but Gray will likely necessitate some pain.
Gray's home/road splits this year wouldn't make me want to spend much to take him out of Oakland, but maybe that's BABIP? No real career split, but given how his pitching has changed this year I'm not sure how useful that is.

Yeah, I'm not thrilled about it, obviously depending on the price. I have said for a while I would rather go after Darvish in free agency, still think that's true.

Who is Marco Gonzales and why did the Mariners just trade their best prospect for him?

I guess O'Neill was blocked by guys like Gamel, Gonzales is a 25 year old LH starter who was a #1 pick in 2013 and who had Tommy John last year. His overall prospect ranking is much lower than O'Neill (how often do you see a one for one prospect deal where the guy leaving was a team's #1 and the guy coming back slots in at #7 for them?), but I guess a better positional fit.

Looks like a guy with average at best strikeout ability, okay control, and hasn't been a big time GB guy. Weird deal, unless they think he's slated for a 2-years-post-TJS boost.

The Mariners probably hope he can help them out of the bullpen this year and I'm guessing they like Kyle Lewis better than O'Neill long term. With Heredia hitting well enough in AAA and the Arizona Fall League last year, they could be keen on him as a long term outfielder and Haniger has emerged as a potential plus bat. So I guess, if I squint hard enough, I can see why they did it. It's not nonsensical, at least.

I wouldn't have made that deal if I was the Mariners, but maybe they believe they are selling high? O'Neill has a ton of helium right now.

mlbtr:
The Brewers and White Sox have reportedly agreed to a trade that will send right-handed reliever Anthony Swarzak from Chicago to Milwaukee in exchange for 25-year-old infield/outfield prospect Ryan Cordell.

Seems like Neshek should be worth about that. Swarzak is owed 400k and Neshek about 3mill.
Both have been roughly as dominant and will be free agents. The only downside is that Neshek has competition.

Here are the names, for the sake of record

The Rockies announced that they’ve acquired right-hander Pat Neshek from the Phillies in exchange for minor league infielder Jose Gomez and minor league right-handers J.D. Hammer and Alejandro Requena.

Gomez is #21 on the mlb.com Rockies top 30, the other two not listed. So unless one of them has taken a big leap this year, they didn't give up much.

people pretending like every reliever on their team that is having a good half season is worthy of an andrew miller/aroldis chapman return need to understand that those two guys are in a class of their own. Preller seems to want a kimbrel return for Hand, and I don't see anyone paying that much for him.

After dropping three straight games to the Dodgers and falling below .500 for the first time since April, the Twins are now fielding offers on their shorter-term assets, reports MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (on Twitter). That includes right-hander Ervin Santanaand newly acquired lefty Jaime Garcia. They’re also getting hits on closer Brandon Kintzler and second baseman Brian Dozier, Feinsand adds.

Duda to the Rays, per Twitter.

Wouldn't be holding out too much hope for a bat at this point.

edit--looks like it is for Drew Smith, RHP reliever, the Rays #30 prospect per MLB Pipeline

This trade season feels awfully different than previous years. It looks like every team out there is trying to match what the Yankees did last year and the White Sox have been doing for two years. GMs look very willing to offload every short-term piece based on earlier-than usual judgment calls not to compete.

It might appear that way to you because it was such a dramatic and successful strategy change for the Yankees; but teams have been trying to get prospect packages for stars and pieces for years

It's more then that imo. Qualifying offers have gotten a lot riskier for teams nowadays, and even then the overall chance that you'll still walk away with something good if/when they decline has been reduced with the new CBA.

IDK, I just see a lot more incentive for teams to sell and eventually start cashing out quicker on guys approaching FA then there used to be.

I can see a few of the sellers smartly making trades for useful pieces in a market flooding with RP options. They won't be this cheap for long, so why not pick up some decent arms. That being said, the Mets did trade 2 of their top 20 prospects for a closer and are rumored to be shopping their own pen pieces. I assume they think they'll get better in return, otherwise this makes absolutely no sense.

Same for Balt.

From what I read, both sides seem to think the deal was fair and the better of the two prospects was more of the "interesting" type than a big loss. They will have Ramos for next year which is part of the reason they dealt for him. He can close in 2018, and if they suck, they can just move him next deadline.

But I do think they'll do pretty well moving Reed, given the interest.

The Astros are “on the verge” of acquiring Francisco Liriano from the Blue Jays, reports USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (on Twitter). MLB Network’s Ken Rosenthal reported (also via Twitter) that the two sides were in talks and added that Houston plans to use Liriano as a reliever.

Are the Blue Jays in sudden need of outfield depth, or does this mean they're trading one of their outfielders?

Maybe just to offset the cost of Liriano, who is owed about 4.6 mil? Aoki is 1.8 mil.
