He's basically due $300 mil over the next 10 years taking him to 37. His value is all in his power and seems to get hurt almost every year. Taking him on could cripple any team if he gets hurt or doesn't OPS .900+. Great risk, moderate return. The Marlins would be ecstatic for someone to take him.

No way from a PR standpoint (new owners) could Marlins let Stanton go with no return. If claimed he would get pulled back if no deal was worked out.

This a case where having Jeter as part of the ownership may make a difference. If he thinks Stanton is retarding their ability to win may make moving him more likely.

what is so terrible about that contract? paying that much in 2023-2024 for Stanton would be equal to what we are paying Hanley now. I would bet on Stanton being a better hitter at 34 than Hanley Ramirez. Especially if he could DH most of the time to help stay healthy

Rays sell high, such as it is, on Tim Beckham...flipping him to BAL for a class A pitcher. One last occasion to imagine what 2008-2014 look like with Buster Posey behind the plate for the Rays....
Beckham has been the best player in baseball since this deal, that is not an exaggeration. Better than Stanton, Trout, whoever. He had a 1.355 OPS for August coming into today, and he just homered to lead off the game for the second day. Unbelievably great move for BAL/awful move for TB, especially considering the guy going the other way was nothing exciting and it was in the division.

34 is one year away for Hanley and 7 years away for Stanton, that's a lot of time to project into the future. I'll take Hanley at 34, easily.

And people are already hoping he misses enough time that his 2019 option doesn't vest. Taking on Stanton through age 37 with his injury history is bonkers.

I don't understand that at all.
Decent power bat off the bench that can get on base from the LH side with rosters expanding soon, can play all three OF positions, solid baserunner (though not nearly as fast as he was). If he looks cooked in the next month-plus you just leave him off the playoff roster. For essentially nothing.

I think that's a sneaky solid pick up for LAD.

The question is what are the Mets doing? This and the Bruce trade are sort of head scratchers for them. Especially if the reports about turning down a more prospect heavy return for Bruce are true.

It's line their primary concern is getting veterans off the major league roster.

Granderson is likely retiring after this year. This is a "go win a WS" move for a popular and respected player. And saves the Mets like $50...

Ethier is back and Gonzalez will be in a few days, right? I get it costbthem nothing but seems like a bench guy that has a few in his way already.

But yea the Mets should be relegated to AAA.

I can't imagine the prospects for Bruce would have been any better than what they got for Duda since Bruce isn't even all that better and is more expensive.

Also they have been trying to trade all of those guys since last winter, no one wanted to give them real talent in exchange. And it's easy to mock them, but the Tigers didn't get much for JD Martinez either, and he's a better hitter than any of the Mets moved.

My guess is that the Dodgers will send struggling Joc Pederson back to AAA and Granderson will take his role then Joc will come back up to be a bench player when rosters expand.
It's already been reported by several Dodgers beat writers that Joc's locker is empty and he's been optioned.

California. Duh.
They've been tinkering with Pederson's swing to try and get him back on track. Clearly they want to get him some swings every day in the minors and see if he can adjust before the postseason.

Granderson just scored the first run of the game for the Dodgers to break a scoreless tie in the 7th after reaching on an error, because of course he did because the Dodgers always win.

The Mariners traded for Mike Leake today.

Per Jeff Passan, batters have hit .347/.394/.497 against Leake in nine starts since the All-Star Break. Leake's ERA is 6.90 in those games.

No word on what is going back. Leake is owed $48 million over the next three years, plus has a $5 million buyout for 2021.

They are sending a 21 year old SS in High-A back and $17M.

Remind me please, any specifIc time tomorrow a player has to be on the roster to qualify for postseason?
I believe the trade deadline is the same as the July one (4 PM ET), but I think if it's a call up, it's by the respective game time. I looked for a link to confirm, but was unsuccessful.

Callups should not matter. Anyone in the organization by August 31st is eligible to replace someone on the 60 day DL. I believe this is informally known as the "Francisco Rodriguez loophole".

Ken Rosenthal: Angels close to acquiring Justin Upton from Tigers.

He still has 4/88.5M left but does have an opt-out after this season. Interesting gamble for the Angels. They're a game out of the wildcard right now and 11 out in the division. Seems a big financial risk (that Upton stays) for what might not be much reward.

Yeah, he evidently told DET he was opting out, hence this deal.

Still a nice sell bailout score for the Tigers there.

Upton really hasn't had a year he hit this well since his early 20s, and just turned 30. If he does do better in free agency this winter it might not be by much. Guessing he wants out of there pretty bad.

Angels get Brandon Phillips and cash from the Braves for minor league C Tony Sanchez.

Cubs acquire Leonys Martin and cash from Marners for ptbnl or cash.

Not clear yet if Verlander nixed the deal or the Astros got cold feet. Bob Nightingale reports that Tigers are not blaming JV.

Edit. Now reporting the Verlander deal does go through with Astros for 3 minor leaguers.
