Non-Stanton news – Houston/Tigers talking Verlander per Heyman.

Source: https://www.fanragsports.com/news/heyman-tigers-astros-discussing-verlander-deal/
The Astros are in a tricky spot. Players voiced displeasure after the front office did nothing of significance at the deadline; the front office was seen as sticking to the long-view at the expense of making a push when the time was right. They've been mediocre, at best, since the ASB and injuries to both players and pitchers have started to mount.

Houston's been seen as the low-rent flip side to the Cubs tear-down-and-rebuild process. If it sticks to their guns and doesn't make a trade, they put the success of that process at risk

The Tigers are shopping Verlander, maybe?

Source: #Tigers in active discussions on Justin Verlander trade possibility. They are making clear to teams that this is a rebuild. @MLB

11:30 update: Ken Rosenthal saying deal to Astros was basically done, but Verlander nixed it with his no-trade clause.

Deal has shockingly gone through at the very last minute. Astros pick up a stud here. Verlander has been pretty great this year.

Wow, yeah, that is huge. Wasn't there talk the Houston clubhouse felt let down by their not doing much by the 7/31 deadline? This addresses that for the final push. They're not missing the playoffs, so this gives them a nice bump holding the 1 seed and in the playoffs.

I'd heard it was dead too, that should be a good story.

He's been good, I wouldn't go as far as to say great. I'd expect an uptick with something to play for, but he's been somewhat inconsistent this season. He's rocking a 4.04 FIP.

I'll potentially like this deal a lot more for the Astros when I see how much money Detroit chipped in.

That must be a large chunk of money Detroit is eating, because straight up, Verlander wasn't worth a ton.

That's a lot of young talent from an organization that had been hesitant to trade prospects, interesting. Perez is a top 50 guy.

Cameron is interesting if they can rework his swing, 55 speed, solid CF glove. Mike's father, reminds me a bit of him too. Perez is a mid rotation guy, but can he stay healthy? Very solid command with 3:1 K:BB ratio, like his delivery and breaking pitches, curveball especially. Rogers is Ausmus-lite of the 2020s; great glove catcher with no bat, future backup. KATOH+ isn't nearly as high on these guys. None of them crack Chris Mitchell's mid-season 100. Sickles at the beginning of last month put Cameron at 10, Rodgers failed to make an honorable mentioned. Perez, it depends which one. If it's Franklin, given the high ranks, #5, prize in the deal.

Without knowledge of money eaten by Houston, no Martes, Tucker, or Whitley is not too big of a price for Houston IMO given the contract left remaining, even with Verlander's concerning 11.4% HR/FB, which raises his standard FIP up 0.36 points alone when talking xFIP , with his SIERA similar at 4.31, and a league average xFIP- at 100 even. xBACON of .349 against (Perpetua's xBABIP .313) tells me he's probably been a bit lucky to only have a .283 BABIP, relatively speaking. bbFIP puts him at 4.96, scFIP likes him a touch more at 4.43.

For those that can't read Kenny Rosenthal's tweets:

@Ken_Rosenthal Verlander to #Astros, source confirms to The Athletic. @anthonyfenech first. Perez, Cameron and Rodgers to #Tigers, per @JonHeyman.

@Ken_Rosenthal RHP Perez was #Astros’ No. 3 prospect, per http://MLBPipeline.com , OF Cameron No. 9, C Rogers #11. #Tigers likely included significant $$$.

Fuck yes. I'm still dreading the idea of the 'Stros facing the Dodgers, but this will definitely help the team get through the AL playoffs.

That's only true if you assume all their starters in October will perfectly reflect their overall numbers from April through August. Verlander has turned his season around since early July, while most of the Astros starters have struggled for the past two months. Since July 4th, Verlander has pitched 13 more innings than any Astros starter and his 2.31 ERA in those 11 starts is nearly a full run lower than any of the others (McHugh's is 3.25).

Dallas Keuchel has been a bad roller coaster ride since returning from the DL, and when Lance McCullers takes the mound again, he'll be over 3 months removed from his last quality start. If they were making out their playoff rotation today, Verlander should be their #1 starter, even if we assume Brad Peacock's new arm slot makes him a legitimate top of the rotation guy. Their rotation still isn't in the same category as Cleveland or Boston, but unless Keuchel quickly straightens things out, Verlander will be their most reliable starter in October.

Even if we remove the terrible start from 7/2 he's got a 3.65 FIP, a 3.57 xFIP and he's still giving up 31% hard contanct with a 25.4% LD rate since "early July." Most of the improvement in ERA seems to be locked up in a .227 BABIP, so I don't think I'd start penciling him in as the best starter on the roster just yet. I'm gonna talk about this on today's podcast, though, so thanks for bringing it up and helping me to flesh out the segment a bit.
