Guys on NFL Radio on Sirius seem to think Butler does NOT need to sign his tender, that NO would just take over his rights.

That said, I've found the guys that host some of those shows to be not very knowledgeable on some of this stuff, which strikes me as odd.
They should read the CBA.

Can't fault BB for offering what he thinks is fair value and can't fault Butler/his agent for trying to cash in. I love Butler forever for SB49 and wish him all the success in the world if he leaves.
Dave Roberts & Malcolm Butler never have to buy a drink in Boston.
I ditto this!!

Okay, for the moment I'm buying Schefter on JG that nothing is happening. Let's get this one cooking again to help pass a slow Friday.

Because I'm procrastinating at work...

I feel like I'd rather have Butler/Gilmore instead of Cooks/Gilmore.

Realistically, how many more points/wins is Cooks going to give this offense? Maybe they score 2-4 more points a game. But isn't the possibility of having two #1 corners a lot more tantalizing?

I'm personally looking at this like dominoes. If Butler gets traded for Cooks, then JG is the future of the Patriots. BB wants JG to have a weapon for the next decade.

Yes, this is how I'm rationalizing this entire thing. No, I do not feel comfortable with you judging me.

For one year I'd agree Cooks doesnt change the offense much, but I think Cooks would be a move to plan for the future without Edelman. He does have deep route speed though so it brings a little more versatility than someone like Amendola, who's probably gone.

I don't see why they need to make this trade this year. Assuming Butler signs his tender (which I won't believe he will refuse to sign), that gives the Patriots a solid secondary and a solid receiving core for this coming year. I know it gets more jumbled after next year, but I don't see the impetus to make the change now.

I touched upon this in the other thread (Ryan to TN) but this does have all the makings of opening up space not only this year but also next when Jimmy G will be a highly paid backup for at least one season. This is what I've felt would be the case with Jimmy based on what he's shown even in his brief time in the lineup but these moves position us to do just that. Cooks is on a cheap 2-year deal so he's cheaper than Amendola right now and while Gilmore costs us more than Butler this season it will likely be cheaper next year plus you have the savings from Ryan to his seemingly low-cost replacement.

These moves have a ton of financial planning involved in securing our most important position for the future but also giving us a chance to still win if Brady did go down over these next two seasons. What's the adage.....the backup QB position is the least important on your team until it isn't.

Maybe they just like Cooks a lot?
I think Bill likes his contract a lot too.

There is an awful lot here I agree with.

I think the floor with JG is BB thinks he could win with him even if he can't be expected to beat teams on his own. That's the floor. I'd have a hard time letting that go as well. Add in that Jacoby may not be ready to be the sole backup (non-energency situation) and the financial maneuvering you describing makes a lot of sense.

Wow. Sign Hightower for $11 Million and take the next few weeks off.

Rex Ryan didn't win the offseason.

I wonder what this says about how the Patriots view this draft class

So, their first and second this year for Cooks, Ealy, and 118. But doesn't Goodell take 118?

Love the trade, think Cooks is a monster in this offense.

Side note, BB must really hate this draft class.

Does this also make it more possible for Jimmy G to go to Cleveland for the 12th and a 2nd?

My thoughts as well. Browns have too many picks and the pats need to restock.

Edit: even more so with the reports that the Browns may not keep Brock (as evident by their press release announcing that trade yesterday)
