I grew up with him as the voice of college football. Loved when he called games, and he made it more interesting. 89 years is a good run.

He seemed so sad the first season of MNF, as though he knew he was out of place in that looney bin. A great college football announcer

Hope he got to see the last Grandaddy of them all in person.

His call of the Charles Woodson Rose Bowl (1998) was the pantheon of college football announcing. Partly because his partner's son ended up MVP of the game, so that took major skill and finesse. And of course his swan song was arguably the greatest college football game ever, the 2006 Rose.

He retired on top.

Loved when he did BC games in the Flutie era with Frank Broyles. Broyles used to sound like Foghorn Leghorn.

they did the 1978 title game that UMass played in, and Broyles kept saying "massa-two-shits" all game long. We made it a drinking game
