Not only is every team the '85 Bears leading up to the game, but when the Patriots beat them, suddenly, they're the '76 Bucs and of course the Patriots beat them.
"Who are the Pats playing this weekend?"
"Not sure.....just know they are going to crush them."
"Totally, I may just skip the game. That's about it for Patriots talk. Right after this break, we're going to take calls about everyone's favorite ice cream"

Felger has said time and time again that it's boring radio if he just cheerleads for the local teams (esp. the Patriots) so he's fairly open that this is an act. He does do a good job of re-setting himself though as I've heard a few times this week "ok ok we're turning the (KC) into the '72 Dolphins."
Mazz on the other hand, goes further into the rabbit hole as time progresses. His take has morphed from "if a team came in and played a flawless game and forced the Patriots into lots of mistakes, they could win. " to "if a team could disrupt the Patriots passing attack just a little, the Patriots are in trouble" - which he said on Thursday

Worked in 2014! And they have had some easier divisional games in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015 and have struggled or lost in the AFCCG... they're right! Ha
F&M Logic: I'd rather have the Patriots play bad and win 24-21 than win 45-10. It will make them play better in the AFCCG.

They got their wish, Monday is going to be interesting.

And that ballbag Carlton from Norwell will be his usual insufferable self as well, he'll be ranting and raving about the four turnovers (they recovered one fumble, lost one and had two INT's).....................I'll take a pass tomorrow.

Six strait conference championship appearances is nothing to sneeze at, something the Packers, Steelers, 49ers, Cowboys, Redskins or Broncos never did, the Raiders got to five strait (although 1976 was joke, they should have been one and done).....................

Felger's anti-Blount hard-on is obnoxious.

He spends 5 years saying he only wants a RB who "takes the yards that are there," and blah, blah.... So Blount does that and more for barely above the league minimum and Felger is doing a victory dance because he was sparsely used in the Texan's game.

And yes, I know "why do you watch, this is what they do, blah, blah."

This is a forum for media discussion including the occasional rant.

I don't follow Mazz on twitter and only occasionally listen to them(usually when Bedard is on) but I saw this entirely typical Mazz tweet when Tom Caron retweeted it:

For those on mobile Mazz was complaining about Mason Crosby not hitting balls down the middle of the uprights, this after he had just made three(counting the one with the time out) kicks of over 50 yards with the game on the line.

Just remember, Felger will accept no celebrity callers.

For weeks every time he calls Carlton has been claiming the Pats will lose the turnover differential and the game. Part of me, when they were up 14-13 being down by 2 turnovers wanted the Pats to not get anymore so that could be shoved in his face (not that Felger & Mazz would ever bring it up).

You'd never know the Pats won by 18 points given the program I've listened to thus far (much of first hour).

That's funny as I thought the same thing; just what he needs, more ammo for the drum he's been beating since December.

"Y'know, it used to be you go to your local Tastee Freez and Old Man Wilson he'd give you three choices: vanilla, chocolate, or get the hell outta here you little bastard, I got work to do! I'm not complaining, that's the way it should be, that was the good ol' days! Nowadays you go into a 10-story Baskin Robbins, they got so many flavors in there, by the time you leave you don't know whether you're a man or a woman!"

"Is Chubby Hubby anywhere close to being an Ice Cream Championship contender? Who's the number one? Pretzel? You're telling me Pretzel is a number one? At best it's a 3. Chocolate might have been a number one back in the day, but now it's more like a max 2, more of a 3 as well. So we're left with peanut butter. I don't know how I feel about Peanut Butter, but it's not a true number 1. So at best we're talking a 2 and a pair of 3's. You can contend with that, but you're not winning with it."

"So who are the legit #1 ingredients to you right now?"

"I'd say Cookie Dough.......... And that's it. Yeah, Cookie Dough."

That pet theory of theirs has been completely debunked in the BBTL thread about the AFCCG. But, you know, Brady's had 2 poor playoff games in a row in 2 different seasons, so he must be done.

I was listening to CBS radio affiliate 670 The Score out here in Chicagoland this morning, and they teased that they would have a guest on to discuss the AFCCG offering the New England perspective. I was pretty excited about it, until Massarotti turned out to be their guest.

He was the biggest pessimist of the 3 people on the segment.

It's either Mazz, Tanguay, or Volin... all are horrible analysts when it comes to the Pats but tend to be the go to people for out of town radio stations for some reason.

Oh, there's a clear reason...they all tend to skew negative when it comes to the Pats, which is exactly what fans want to hear in any market outside of New England.

Some of it may have to do with the CBS affiliation. At least in the case of Felger and Mazz. I know CBS is strict about saying "in network" (which is why Boomer Essasion had to stop doing D & C after many, many years. Not sure if Voliin is in network, or if its just because the Globe is the largest newspaper in NE.

But surely, their general anti-Pats sentiment is an asset in radio markets outside NE

I got a chuckle out of how hard they were pimping Brady's playoff INTs as a harbinger of doom. Several callers in a row called to say "Okay... Enough! We get it!" And those two shitheads took it as an indicator that Pats fans won't tolerate anyone who dares to besmirch Brady.

No... seriously... we really meant just STFU about repeating the same stat 10,000 times in a row.

Let's talk about all that could go wrong with the Patriots and all that could go right with the Steelers and proclaim these things as what will happen.
Last year, they railed on the Patriots for blowing HFA and having to go to Denver for the AFCCG, the whole "If they played that game in Foxboro, they'd win"..........so I guess the Broncos would have just left their defense at home then.

Now this year, they have HFA, but the rub now is the 70's Steelers are coming to town and they are going to lose.

With these two clambrains, you just can't win, the captains of negativity.

33 more hours to go.......................

I wonder how our boys are doing tonight -- especially with Green Bay going down in the first one.

Actually, I don't. There is nothing to wonder about.

Felger's actually quite down on his hometown Packers, so he's probably not all upset about it.

Wow, after a week in which Felger & Mazz tought me that the Pats have the softest schedule in the history of the league, that their #1 in the league in points allowed defense is actually a horrendous defense, that they played horrendously in a game in which they won by 18 points and that Brady sucks in the playoffs, I'm surprised the Pats were even in the game tonight.

The best is when they complain that the pats havent faced any good QBs, the in the next segment complain that the NFL has like 5 elite QBs

He's been down on the Packers recently (mostly due to their injuries and lack of defense) so he won't be too upset about that.
As for Blunt having a good game... opinions may vary, i guess (although i do think the run where he carried the whole Steelers D basically broke PITT's will) but Blount had the EXACT type of game Felger always talks about.
He piles up yards when the score is basically out of reach and scores 1 yd touchdowns.

His problem with Blount is people thinking he's a top-tier RB.

Like everything else, Felger is over-the-top in his criticism of Blount. But when he gets into that mode the objection he has is with Pats fans who claim Blount is a "Top 5" running back, and the only thing separating him from Elliott is the Dallas O-line.

I think Blount is probably a bit underrated if anything, but Felger is not wrong on that point. But that kind of ammo to attack is red meat for him.

Prediction: "It wasn't a game anymore after Bell got hurt. That was it. We still don't know if the Pats D is any good because they haven't faced a good offense all year. Once again the Pats had a rabbit's foot up their tailpipe."

I do think Blount's run broke Pittsburgh's will, but I think the critical sequence came when James' TD was overturned and the Pats D shoved the Steelers back and they settled for a FG. From 17-12 and going for 2 to 17-9, tail between the legs, and a squander of precious momentum.

Felger was on TV after the game and gave the Pats complete credit for beating the Steelers.
As Ed Hillel did say there was some mild questioning as to why they took the ball and more serious questioning as to why they threw on the early 3rd and 1. Those are of course both pretty silly, on the 3rd and 1 the ball literally went through Mitchell's hands, but overall he gave them full credit.

He may come up with some more criticisms for the radio but it was pretty mild on TV.

Edit: Dick, you may be surprised to hear that in addition to the above Felger was saying essentially the same as you about the critical sequence being the (correctly) overturned touchdown and subsequent goal line stand.

Who exactly is arguing Blount is a top 5 back?
There are some callers who make that claim.

edit: I should say that I don't specifically recall a caller using "top 5" but, as posted above, callers have said he could replicate what Elliot has done in Dallas with a similar O-line and a number of callers have classified Blount as a top RB

I didn't watch the post game, so I'm curious what exactly was the criticism of the 3rd and 1 pass play on the first drive? I'm assuming that it was that they didn't run it, and that the fact that the Steelers did the exact same thing on their first possession was conveniently ignored.

In both cases, they were catchable balls that the receivers failed to reel in. The Steelers' play call might have been worse from a "they should have run it" standpoint since they arrived at 3rd and 1 thanks to two straight Bell runs of 3 and 6 yards, and their incompletion was a home run swing of a play. The Patriots were at least running their bread-and-butter short yardage quick throw offense on their failed 3rd and 1.

Fact is, 3rd and short situations are no longer automatic run-it-up-the-gut calls in today's NFL. Teams are throwing all the time on any down at any distance.
