Amusing tweet about Joey Bats.

Heyman: Orioles prefer to keep draft, too, but to explain why Bautista doesn't fit, they told JB camp: O's fans just don't like him

The Rangers continue looking for a center fielder following the potential departures of Ian Desmond and Carlos Gomez, and it appears one possible answer could be the Padres’ Travis Jankowski, according to T.R. Sullivan and AJ Cassavell, both of MLB.com.

Jankowski, of course, is not a big, or even medium, name, as Desmond, Gomez and potential trade target Billy Hamilton are. Jankowski graded as an outstanding defender in 2016, however, and could keep the Rangers strong up the middle. He posted an excellent 12.8 UZR and 8 Defensive Runs Saved in 2016, accumulating 2.1 Wins Above Replacement even as he batted just .245/.332/.313.

Wade Davis to Cubs for Jorge Soler. In a crazy market for closers, Theo gets Davis for a guy who got 13 AB the entire postseason and a WAR of 0.1 over the past 2 seasons (187 games).

It's for one year of Davis
I know. And Davis has forearm issues. But Soler isn't very good. And if he does turn it around, he will be a FA by the time the Royals become good again. This seems very light compared to what the Yanks got for a couple of months of Aroldis Chapman (or Beltran even). And the Cubs did't have the QO option with Champan that they will with Davis.

I know #Athletics fans are thrilled today that the late Bill King is the winner of the Ford C. Frick Award. Well-earned and overdue.

When we moved to the Left Coast, the only games we could get on the radio were Oakland games. Quickly grew to be a fan of King. He did both radio and TV for the A's, but he really was a strong radio guy

That's the difference between a team desperately trying to win their first world series in a million years, and one who just won it...

I think this is a good lesson on trying to identify and capitalize on peak value. Not very long ago, Soler was basically a can't miss top-15 prospect like Moncada. Cuban, high-profile signing, puts up strong numbers in the minor leagues. Albeit slightly older and bit by injury, he puts up really good performances in the minors and rises fast. Plus physical tools, athleticism, built like a linebacker (6ft 4, 215lb). He put up insane ISO's the upper minors in limited samples during 2014. (.446 over 79 PA in AA, .336 over 127 PA in AAA) He didn't have the strikeout flags associated with Moncada, only K'ing around 20% at both levels while walking around 14-15% of the time. He gets promoted to the majors late August and exceeds expectations, slashing .292/.330/.573 with 5HR over 24 games, 97 PA. I mean, he didn't walk much (6.2%) and struck out more (24.7%)...but not so bad for a cup of coffee from a 22 year old with limited minor league action.

That was maybe the peak of Soler's career so far - it's gone downhill since. He strikes out in 30% of the time in 101 games in 2015, barely putting up a replacement level season. He did better in 2016, cutting 5% off his K-rate, walking a bit more, added some more power (.198 ISO) over 264 PA.

Soler could have been packaged for a Sale-like talent in 2014 and now he's only bringing back a potentially gimpy Wade Davis with 1 year left. This is the inherent risk of prospects and I'm sure the Cubs regret not pulling the trigger earlier. Theo kinda has a habit of that though, which was inherited by Cherington as well. They weren't all that great on identifying peak value and capitalizing on it. DD does have a track record of doing rather well with this. And recognizing market trends and aggressively capitalizing on it rather than reacting to it.

What in the hell is Colorado doing? Surrendering the 11th pick to fill sing an OF when they have no hole in the OF?
As the resident Rox fan here, this is a good question. Hopefully, this is the first move in a series that will involve moving one of their surplus outfielders (likely Cargo or Blackmon) for relief pitching plus whatever else; the former is their biggest need. Then, if they are able to free up some payroll by perhaps moving Cargo, they can possibly jump in on EE or maybe Trumbo for first base since they've already surrendered their first pick. Under this scenario, the Desmond signing makes sense. The price is certainly right, but for now you're right that giving up the 11th overall pick for Desmond when they already have Story and a surplus outfield makes little sense.

Wow, that seems like an insane price for Adam Eaton.

Eaton is signed for 32 mil over the next 5 years. You could argue he's a more valuable chip than Sale. Over the past 3 years, Eaton has a WAR of 15.4, Sale 14.8.

Eaton is really cheap, controlled for 5 years, and still only 27 years old, so maybe he gets even better. But, that seems like a hell of a lot to give up, especially with Strasburg a huge question mark. Plus, The Nats still don't have a closer or a set up man. Maybe getting Eaton so cheap in dollars frees payroll to sign Jansen. Wow. Rick Hahn making early case for executive of the year.

Eaton
Turner
Harper
Rendon
Murphy
Worth
Zimmerman
Norris

Is a pretty sick lineup though if they can keep people healthy this year.

Saw somewhere on Twitter today that the Nats were talking to the Rays about Colome.

Not reasonably. Though the argument would be a fine example of not understanding the fickle nature of defensive value incorporated in WAR.

I'm almost pissed that DD didn't ship Bradley Jr to Washington for Giolito and just sign Fowler. Adam Eaton is a nice player but that's crazy.

Say what you will about Sale and Eaton's contracts but Chicago now have the #1 Minor League pitcher and position player in baseball. That's got to be exciting.

Really makes me wonder what WAS offered PIT for McCutchen...

Wasn't this the rumored return for Sale? If so, holy crap is right.
The package for Sale was Giolito + Robles or Giolito + Robles + Lopez depending on who you ask.

Robles is universally ranked as a top 15-20 prospect in the MLB but is really far away.

A lot of that is based on defensive metrics rating him exceptional in RF, similar to Jason Heyward. I didn't think Heyward was worth anywhere near $180M and I don't think 5 years of Eaton are worth anywhere near 3 years of Sale.

Edit: Or what Pap's Poutine said, in a less snide way. :)
