World B. Flat: Kyrie Irving on being "a generational leader"

From what I’ve seen in interviews...especially comedic settings.. I feel the exact opposite. He may have an odd way of saying things and a quirky sense of humor.. but the world is full of disinteresting, normal jerks. I think he’s a nice change from what’s normal.
Maybe inarticulate (which was the word I used to which you were responding) isn't the right word. I've quoted this before but here is Irving's explanation to SAS as to why he wanted a trade:

"as a 25 year old evolving man coming in to perfect my craft every single day I just wanted to be in an environment where I felt I could be taught every single day and have that demand from my coaching staff and have that demand from a franchise that would propel me to exceed my potential and see how far I can go."

On the one hand I got what he was saying....the second time around when I listened carefully.

He's no worse than Brady. Brady tries to say all the right things and instead looks as if he's hiding something. Irving tries to seem really smart* but over does it a bit and it comes out in kind of a convoluted or over-stylized way.

ED: *And forces us to read between the lines a lot.

Nobody can exceed their potential. That would just mean we hadn't measured their potential correctly.

That's what I mean about reading between the lines. One can exceed their potential (in Cleveland).

Some relatively encouraging signs after the Mannix article from a couple days ago.

I keep saying this, this is his team. It even has a guy that he tried to recruit to Cleveland years ago (Hayward). He might decide to leave for New York after his next contract, but he's re-signing here to build his brand as the best player on the best team in the NBA.

To further the NBA silly rumor mongering season: James Stewart on 98.5 said don't be surprised to hear the Celtics are discussing a Kyrie trade. He says the last 24 hours may have altered the Celtics' thinking. When he says these kinds of things, remember that he has connections to people in the front office. They teased his nugget to the next segment so we'll see what else he has to say.

What’s the last 24 hours? Kyrie’s statement that he wouldn’t sign this summer? Everyone knew that.

So...are they playing chicken now?

KI says "if you're gonna talk to Lebron I'm gonna be cagey as fuck" and this is their response?

The NBA off season is way more fun when it doesn't involve a team you care about.

If it's news to Danny that Kyrie isn't willing to take a $80M discount, then we're in trouble.

I think everyone knew that he wasn't signing this summer. The only thing I can think of is that he didn't come out and give more of a firm commitment to playing in Boston long-term. Not saying I agree with what Stewart said, but we all know Ainge explores every option and I wouldn't be surprised if Kyrie goes in a trade that makes the team better.

The list of players who might be available where it makes sense to trade Kyrie is incredibly small. Obviously, Ainge would drive Kyrie to airport if LeBron wanted to come to Boston. Ditto for AD. I think Kawhi stays in SA but if he doesn’t, Ainge may investigate again.

Nothing else really makes sense for the Celtics. I’m sure the Knicks would love to make a run at Kyrie but they don’t have enough to offer. 2018 #9, Ntilikina, filler, and a future unprotected pick type deal wouldn’t make sense for a team like Boston that is ready to win now.

I prefer to think of it as: "this how I know my team has arrived."

From the Globe article, we can see his actual words in print:

https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/celtics/2018/06/12/kyrie-irving-noncommittal-about-possible-reunion-with-lebron-james/8Tl1FqJkYexPsqryN8Iv4M/story.html?event=event12

“Contractually or financially, it just wouldn’t make any sense,” Irving said.

Of course, the lack of an extension in no way means Irving will not be interested in re-signing with the Celtics.

“I think you guys can feel my attitude is really just redemption next year,” he said. “Really integrating myself with our team again and really focus on winning a championship. That’s the only thing I’m really worried about. Until I get to that point, then I can’t really answer any questions. I’m pretty sure management and I will have a talk, but that talk won’t happen now.”
I do not believe anyone that claims those words would cause Ainge to change his mind and decide to trade Kyrie. Of course, it's entirely possible that something else happened in the past 24 hours that made Ainge open to trading Kyrie. But it wasn't that interview.

Kyrie isn't very articulate. For example, I think the motivation behind his decision to ask for a trade was misrepresented by the media and his inability to clearly express himself was part of why that happened. The flat earth stuff is weird but I have zero (0) concerns that children are going to grow up disbelieving the round earth theory all because of Kyrie. That's a made up worry.
I don't think articulation is his problem. Even if you take him at his word that he thinks there should be a conversation about whether the world is flat, he's an idiot, a troll, or both.

Plus, he went to Duke.

The thread title is really good, praise be to whoever thought of that.
Yes it is.
