This, and they're red. Very confusing.

I saw those Man U kits in the store today. I want to like them, i see that they're trying to do something other than template. It's. . . just. . . not. . . quite. . . it.

Ben Foster retired again. After 4 games Wrexham lead League Two in scoring with 13 goals, but also lead in goals conceded with 13.

He should never have to buy a drink in Wrexham, and good for him for not letting pride get in the way of the right decision. Lainton was playing really well last year before getting hurt. Big decision for the club whether he's their full time guy or whether they need to buy someone. It's a long year, but at this point you kind of have to think that without Mullin and with tumult at the keeper position, it's a year to just focus on playing good football, keeping their powder dry, and staying up -- which you would think should not be that hard. We'll see. Early days.

Before his retirement I thought they needed a defender. All of the goals allowed have not been Foster's fault (although he did look pretty bad). They're leaders in goals scored without Mullin? I would think they make for League One and invest in getting the defense up to snuff but maybe some of that money needs to go to GK now.

This is weird one and obviously off topic to this thread. I thought about posting it in the Scottish thread. Anyway, my wife knows an American billionaire who fell in love with Scotland a number of years ago. He also loves football ( the real sort of football) . He wanted to heavily invest in a small Scottish team, let’s say north of Aviemore. I think he’s obviously been watching the media coverage of Wrexham, but let’s face it, he’s not exactly Dead Pool material. He’s just a rich Yank. So I don’t think there would be a media frenzy. He some how got it in his head ( because it would be a great story !) that he wanted to invest in this small team so heavily and attract players beyond Celtic and Rangers capabilities and challenge them. I pointed out a few problems with this, like financial fair play rules in Scotland. He thought a way around it was like one of his companies sponsoring a team for let’s say 200M. My immediate reaction was I didn’t think FFP worked that way, but what do I know? Anyway haven’t heard a peep for 9 months about it. What’s truly bizarre is he’s smart with money, why the hell would you invest in a Scottish highland team? Just bizarre. But as I said, I think the idea is dead.

Seeing some of Foster’s comments were interesting to me personally. The way he describes it- shots going in that he has no idea how they slipped past- is exactly how it felt for me. I’d imagine hitting in baseball is something similar- meatballs you once hit to Mars are suddenly in the catcher’s mitt. You spend so much time training and taking reps that responses to certain situations become automatic. When once comfortable saves start hitting the net it’s awfully difficult to relearn your “new” body in time to adjust.

Sometimes you run into people with so much money that they have started to stress out about how to spend it. A football team is as good as anything. Why not -- if you can give some joy to people in a place you have taken to? Can't take it with you, that's for sure.

There was a time the SPL was good, wasn't it? That it wasn't just the Old Firm? And I mean beyond "Fergie at Aberdeen", I mean actually a deep and decent league.

I assume the money and market is there beyond Glasgow. Heck, you'd think one of the Edinburgh teams would have lots of untapped market potential, they're perpetually second-city in footballing terms.

Other teams have good seasons, but Celtic and Rangers have won 108 titles, the rest have won 19, and that includes Dunbarton, who last won in the 1890s. No other team has won since 1985. And after Aberdeen and Dundee, no team besides those 4 have won since 1965.

Back in the 2000's there was the curious case of Gretna F.C which entered the Scottish football pyramid. They had a multi-millionaire who pumped vast amounts of cash into them. They won the Div 3, 2, and 1 on the trot. They finally made it to the SPL. Also, during this time, they made it to the final of the Scottish Cup and lost to Hearts in the final. Talk about coming from nowhere. Well, the rich benefactor became seriously ill and pulled all financial resources from them. They were quickly liquidated. Suffice to say, the Scottish FA made more restrictions as far as financial fair play to prevent some rich guy pumping oodles of money into a club when otherwise it would be beyond their normal means.

I don't want to pollute this thread about the halcyon days of Scottish club football, it's been discussed in the Scottish thread several times over the years. But yeah, Dundee Utd and Aberdeen displaced the Old Firm as top dogs for a few years. One aspect that gets overlooked was the President of Roma bribing the ref of the European Cup semi-final second leg between Roma and Dundee Utd. United were 2:0 up and lost the second leg 3:0 to go out. Luckily Liverpool beat Roma on penalties in the final.

The 2nd episode with Millie and the other autistic children and the quiet place was exceptionally well done. A team being part of and helping the community is such an underrated part of small semi-pro and pro sports.

I watched the latest Reservation Dogs just before this. I was all kinds of fucked up for an entire day.

This show demonstrates how much richer it is to broaden the scope and show the sports club in its local context. The docu-series about squad dynamics is kind of growing stale. The community makes things to much bigger.

Holy shit the Susan Lucci cameo.

My mother watched every episode of “All My Children” from the first season to the end. 1-2pm was sacred time in my house. I learned to tell time because I could only ask her for something during a commercial break - I could time my requests.

So seeing Lucci triggered all those old memories, which are good ones. I swear my mother wasn’t neglecting me…as a parent now, I better understand needing to have alone time.

Episode 10 examined the club's connection to the mining workers, and the Gresford Colliery Disaster of 1934. The cold open gave an overview of the tragedy, then the opening credits replaced the visuals of contemporary Wrexham with archival footage of the miners. It elevated the opening song to a devastating accompaniment, and I was a puddle by the end of it. I started watching this show merely as a curiosity (not a big footy fan, nor reality TV ), but it has consistently surprised me with how deeply it has made me care about the town and the fans. The Rob'n'Ryan owner travails are the least interesting aspect of the show to me.

And the women's team is incredible!

They really have done a nice job. I'll be in Liverpool this weekend and will be driving around the Northern Welsh coast next week, and I'm absolutely stopping in Wrexham and having a pint at The Turf purely because of the show.

After following the team last season through the National League I was wondering how they were going to package this and not have it come across as a "Faith Rewarded" season celebration of the on field accomplishments. Apparently I had forgotten what makes the series so damn good in the first place. The focus off the pitch, or in some episodes on the women, is what makes this so fun to watch.

It's been a really good season so far and I think they are going to stick the landing with the Notts County and league title victory.

Wrexham take on Notts County in a League 2 match today at 10:00 am eastern. The two teams are currently #2 (Notre County) and #3 (Wrexham) in the League 2 table.

They have done a really nice job this year. You would think the narrative of last season would have been enough to hang the whole series on, but I think they rightly understood that many fans of the show were aware of how things ended up, and so they've done a great job interspersing episodes that are team-adjacent with episodes about the title race.

I thought that a few of the vignettes about how much the owners have invested/lost were like the only parts that came close to hitting a false note. But I think it is in service of building drama for the stakes of the league title. That said, all I could think was holy shit, you guys have made millions on paper at least in club value alone! But, they did actually make that point in the end.

The fact they've spent two entire episodes on the women's team is really quite remarkable.
Those episodes were great. Really well done. Everyone they profile seems really likeable, but not in a puff piece kind of way.

They don't exactly shy away from difficult subjects either -- I thought their hooligan episode last year was fair. But still, they really give you a sense of place while rooting for these folks.

Remarkable yes, but even more than that they've told their story so well that I've become really invested in it.

I was a nervous mess watching the episode where they play the pro/rel match.

Season finale was really, really good. Mentioned upthread that I had confidence they would stick the landing and still came away impressed. The turns they took on what could have been a simple 30 minute sportsgasm on the match should have come as no surprise - though that also would been a great thing to watch. They have masterfully told the story of a community and families that are bound together by the club, pulling into focus so many marginalized people and groups in the process. Starting with the town, going through sexual orientation, gender, disablity and others in a way that makes you care about them like you are a part of it. So many parts of this I just loved:

  • The opening song and the pregame scene with old guy crying kicked up my dust alergy something terrible.
  • Devoting time to Notts County and thier plight, instead of using them as a foil or forgotten side show.
  • Cutting away to Paul Mullin's son and visiting the school after scoring his 1st goal
  • Bringing Eliott Lee's tradgey and triumph full circle amid the celebration of promotion

Winning helps a lot, but the results on the pitch would not have changed the show fundementally. Can't wait for season 3.

I really like that they portrayed their main season long rival not as a set of bad guys that they have to beat, but were very complimentary to them and congratulated them on their impressive run. While also showing how nerve racking those final weeks were because of their winning. They brought the player and community stories together, and you really did get this feeling of relief and joy from them all. It was great story telling.

They really stuck the landing. An excellent season. They can keep this train rolling for a while. I really care about a number of these people and the town in general.

And what a player Mullin is. He does it all. Amazing.

Echoing everyone - what a lovely finale.

This show is special. Reynolds and McElhenney have put the absolute perfect production team in place. Would be absolutely amazing if Wrexham can win promotion again - currently in 2nd.

Can I ask how you were able to get tickets? I’m an International Member and we’ve planned a trip around going to the February 17th match against Notts County. I’ve been a doing a few dry runs on ticket release days and I’ve been struggling to get the tickets I need. It doesn’t help that International Members are all fighting over a total of 75 tickets.
