Andujar isn't going anywhere unless Baumgarner or DeGrom are on the market.
I hope those one of those two are gettable. SF will want Torres. Is Andujar plus Frazier and a top pitching prospect or two enough to get an elite starter? This is where Cashman's brains come in handy. His track record with starting pitchers is not great.

The names we are hearing that are available are guys like Danny Duffy, Cole Hamels and Michael Fulmer. I don't believe that Andujar will be moved for mediocre guys like that. Not the way that management has talked about the impact Andujar and Torres are having on team.

Also, when was the last time that a legit ROY candidate, like Andujar or Torres, was traded in their rookie year? I can't think of one.

I would make that deal too. I don't believe Snell will be on the market though.
I cannot imagine Snell on the market. Guy is an emerging stud, under team control through 2022. Granted, they probably could get a ton for him, so I guess anything is possible.

If I'm the Yanks, I ask about Archer. Know he's hurt at the moment, but he's only got one more year after this so he's getting to that point, contract-wise, where Tampa normally is starting to move guys. Archer isn't a stud anymore, but he's solid. And he's an innings-eater. I bet they could get Archer for less than Andujar.

Who is still talking about Danny Duffy? He is not only mediocre at best, he is pricy.

Archer has reasonably priced club options for 2020 and 2021, but Archer also has been a giant physical question mark since late 2017 and Archer has been shelled his entire career by Boston (2-12 wtih an ERA over 5) even at his best. I would barely offer anything for him, no way I see a match there with what TB would want.

Yanks should focus on getting a starter who can help them win in October, somebody to match up with the No. 2 guy from Houston or Boston. I agree with Wingack. Don't trade Andujar unless you get a 1 or a 2 starter in return.
I cannot think of a rookie having a big season who was traded in July. But I do remember quality St. Louis starter Ernie Broglio going for a young Cubs outfielder named Lou Brock. Cautionary tale.

I think Cashman will stick with what he has if the choice is that or having to overpay for a non-ace. I have said it periodically since Opening Day, but if NY doesn't win the World Series this year, that will give Cashman more leeway to go nuts this winter with trades and free agents, I'm honestly not sure which I am rooting for but 2019 has been the target to be at full strength for a couple of seasons now, I don't think NY's current record changes that as much as people think.

Also Torres is absolutely not going anywhere at this point, unless the Mets offer both DeGrom and Syndergaard (which they clearly won't). Does Cashman say no to 2+ years of control on DeGrom for 6+ of Torres? I think he does.

The long view still holds. That's how a smart organization should operate. You have been saying this for at least two years now, Jon, probably longer. Cashman has been very firm in this.
The fact that Machado and Harper are still so young is important. Let's keep this team young. But right now the focus is on pitching. This team won't go far in October with Tanaka and CC backing up Severino.

Duffy is the type of guy that gets mentioned in trade deadline articles all the time. These are the type of starters that are actually available.

I do like Happ though. Just not for anything close to Andujar.

Duffy isn't young (29 1/2) and NY would be locked into him through 2021 at somewhat big money ($16M per season). I think Corbin in the offseason is a similar/better option who would cost a similar amount and not cost prospects, I don't see a Duffy deal happening.

Also NY is able to offer a lot for a young cost-controlled SP they really crave, which is why I think Cashman might end up with someone unexpected like Snell or Reynaldo Lopez.

Well, those same three did take the team to the seventh game of the ALCS last year, and I think the rest of the team is decidedly better this year. NY was 6-0 at home in the postseason last year, so I wouldn't discount what the current personnel could do if they got the #1 seed.

NY right now has:

Severino
Gray
Sabathia
German
Loaisiga

And Tanaka back in 3-4 weeks, but I wonder how Sheffield factors into this down the stretch, not just readiness but innings issues.

Another factor is that if NY can't get someone to impact the rotation before the ASB, I think it actually becomes a lot less of a priority for them (depending on the health of other guys, of course). NY's post-ASB schedule is so easy that unless someone is a clear upgrade to their current top 4 (including Tanaka), I'm not sure they give up much. So, in other words, Happ now is a lot more valuable to NY than Happ on 7/31.

I am not saying the Yankees are interested in Duffy. Just that Duffy and his ilk are the guys that are available this year.

Right, and I'm saying most guys on non-contending teams are available depending on the price, whether they're being rumored or not.

I agree that Cashman is far more liable to make a non-significant move than he is to blow prospects on a non-ace who isn't a difference maker. Corbin or Snell would seem to be higher on the list than Hamels. I still believe we're going to get a big bullpen arm. 7 important innings across 7 playoff games could be just as important as the 1 start we get from a Hamels type.

I could definitely see him targeting Hand, lefty relief after Chapman is a weakness in the system, and Hand is under control through 2021. Hand will be pricy, but keeping him away from the Astros (although they will likely just get Herrera anyway) is worth something too.

I think NY ends up getting Happ and no one else, unless ARI or ATL or maybe SF fall out of the race enough to move a starter (Corbin, a bunch of ATL options, Bumgarner who I don't think is going anywhere no matter what). I also don't think they trade for a top reliever because I think Hand will be too pricy, but that one I can see at least.

Justus Sheffield has been held out two extra days in AAA now (last pitched on the 14th) and I wonder if it has anything to do with wanting to change the rotation and somehow get Sonny Gray out of the Boston series next weekend. Right now it is Gray/German/Loaisiga but Severino can flip for the Sunday game on full rest, so it is probably just trying to get CC over Gray in the opener if possible. Tanaka sounds like he'll be back pretty soon also, he was jumping around on the outskirts after the Stanton walkoff which was promising.

Also my man Cody Carroll has closed two nights in a row in AAA, which as Mike Axisa points out is often a precursor to a callup. I think they are playing service time games with both Drury and Kahnle for the next couple of weeks, but man do they have a lot of options if and when they decide to go to them. Even Tyler Wade has seemingly recovered from the flu that made him lose fifteen pounds in April and is looking like a pro again, so many guys.

The old farts here are in complete agreement, CC and Tanaka will fade this year, it's unavoidable without resorting to serious pharmacological enhancement which will not occur, neither is the reckless type.

Tanaka is getting some time off now, it looks like he should be about 20 innings behind his 2017 pace by the end of June. CC I don't think has ever faded down the stretch of a season, even this older version. At some point we have to start trusting this version more, he now is up to 71 starts and 404 innings since the start of 2016 with a 3.69 ERA and a 118 ERA+.

I think the question is who will be alongside those two and Severino in the postseason, Gray, German, an internal reinforcement (Sheffield?) or an external reinforcement. I am guessing it will be Happ or Fulmer at this point, we'll see.
