Starting this thread because NY will need to add a bunch of prospects to the 40 man this offseason to protect them, and I want to keep an eye on how that progresses.

Guys they will definitely need to add before the rule 5 draft, if not sooner:

Aaron Judge
Jorge Mateo (he's not close but you can't risk him being taken, I don't think)
Miguel Andujar
Kyle Higashioka
Tyler Austin
Ben Heller

Guys coming back from the 60 day DL:

Greg Bird
Bryan Mitchell

Guys who have spots now who are either FAs they will let leave or can painlessly be DFAd:

Richard Bleier
Ivan Nova
Anthony Swarzak
Mark Teixeira
Kirby Yates
J.R. Graham (who? a 26 year old reliever in AA who NY claimed from MIN a few months ago)

Guys who may be DFAd at any point due to lousy performance:

Alex Rodriguez
Aaron Hicks

So even without adding anyone from outside, the offseason 40 man roster already looks tight, which is why I'm guessing Cashman plans to open a few more spots by Monday if he can (Austin Romine, thanks for your service) to give him some more flexibility.

OK, so post trading deadline, let me take a shot at where they stand. Instead of mostly copying everything in post 1, this time I will list who I think actually needs to be on the list before the rule 5 draft:

Locks (29):

Betances
Cessa
Clippard
Green
Heller
Holder
Mitchell
Pineda
CC
Severino
Tanaka
Warren

Higashioka
Romine
Sanchez

*Andujar
Austin
Bird
Castro
Gregorius
Headley
*Mateo
Refsnyder
Torreyes

Ellsbury
Gardner
Hicks
Judge
Mason Williams

*Not on yet

Possible keepers, currently on the 40 man (13):

Ackley
Barbato
Bleier
Billy Butler
Eovaldi
Domingo German
Goody
Layne
Lindgren (he is going to be out all of 2017, so you could probably safely leave him unprotected and assume that no one will carry him all season on their 25 man, his upside isn't that high, especially after surgery)
Mantiply
Pazos
Rumbelow
Shreve

Parmelee

Possible keepers, not yet on 40 man DL (10)

Cave
Crawford
Enns
Giovanny Gallegos
Herrera
Lail
Tarpley
Torrens
Webb

So maybe Shreve, Enns, Herrera, Torrens, Goody, Gallegos, Pazos, Tarpley, Crawford, German, Lail?

It's hard to believe that Torrens, a catcher in low A, could really stick on a big league roster all year, but you hate to lose a talented catcher just in case. Crawford is a superior defender at a key positions (CF), and so could maybe stick with someone as a backup just based on that.

The two guys NY got from PIT yesterday are both rule 5 eligible, Tarpley probably needs to be protected and Polo they can probably roll the dice on not sticking elsewhere.

Gamel traded to help alleviate this coming crunch, good news for Mason Williams or Jake Cave maybe.

Holder added one year early, because NY called him up today.

Holder apparently throws a fastball in 92-95 range and drops in a slow curveball that tends to freeze hitters.

His control is his main selling point, 101 Ks and just 7 BBs this year in 65 innings. I thought maybe he wasn't as good as his numbers, but obviously Cashman believes in him at least somewhat to give up the 40 man spot.

Rashad Crawford is a superior, raw athlete who is playing himself into consideration to be protected, since he is evidently a stellar defensive center fielder and could maybe be stashed as a 4th or 5th OF all season by a rebuilding team. I will add him above.

Also I added Mason Williams to the Lock list because he is evidently playing great in AAA and NY traded Gamel to free up that spot.

Adding Giovanny Gallegos, a 25 year old reliever who has put up consistently remarkable numbers for two years in multi-inning relief at three levels, around a 1.50 ERA combined in 142 innings in 2015-2016.

Tonight he came in to Scranton's playoff game with a 11-3 lead in the 6th, bases loaded, no one out, and struck out JP Crawford (#2 prospect in all of baseball, between Moncada and Giolito), struck out the next guy and got the third out, all three guys stranded, and added two more hitless innings after that.

Blake Parker and Kirby Yates claimed off waivers by the Angels, Swarzak elected free agency, so that's three spots cleared.

Connor Mullee claimed off waivers by the Cubs, four major surgeries since being drafted in 2010, good luck to him.

Higashioka added to the 40 man, as well as Domingo German. The latter is a bit surprising, he has a great arm but is 24 and still in A ball, plus they non-tendered him last winter and managed to retain him (admittedly he is a year farther away from arm surgery now).

NY picks up LOOGY Joe Mantiply from Detroit and DFAd Branden Pinder, so Mantiply is on the 40 man for now although I bet they'll try to sneak him through waivers at some point.

Cito Culver declared as a minor league FA recently, so I took him off the list and added Domingo German to my projected set of keepers.

So we can officially say the Yanks got nothing out of Cito, their first-round draft pick from Rochester, NY in about 2009.

Oof, Aaron Sanchez and Noah Syndergaard both taken in the six picks following Culver, too, and if you stick to slick-fielding shortstops, Andrelton Simmons went in the second round.

Culver actually showed signs of life last year, he may still have a big league career somewhere but almost certainly not in NY.

McCann traded frees up another 40 man spot before tomorrow's 7 PM deadline before the Rule 5 draft, updated list in the next post.

40 man roster needs to be finalized by 8 PM on Friday, here is my latest guess:

Locks (30):

Betances
Cessa
Clippard
Green
Heller
Herrera
Holder
Mitchell
Pineda
CC
Severino
Tanaka
Warren

Higashioka
Romine
Sanchez

Andujar
Austin

Gregorius
Headley
Mateo
Refsnyder
Torreyes

Ellsbury
Gardner
Hicks
Judge
Mason Williams

Possible keepers, currently on the 40 man (10):

Barbato
Bleier
Domingo German
Goody
Layne
Lindgren (he is going to be out all of 2017, so you could probably safely leave him unprotected and assume that no one will carry him all season on their 25 man, his upside isn't that high, especially after surgery)
Mantiply
Pazos
Rumbelow
Shreve

Possible keepers, not yet on 40 man DL (9)

Cave
Crawford
Enns
Giovanny Gallegos
Lail
Tarpley
Torrens
Webb

So maybe Shreve, Enns, Torrens, Goody, Gallegos, Pazos, Tarpley, Crawford, German, Lail are the 10 added to the 30 above?

It's hard to believe that Torrens, a catcher in low A, could really stick on a big league roster all year, but you hate to lose a talented catcher just in case. Crawford is a superior defender at a key position (CF), and so could maybe stick with someone as a backup just based on that.

Andujar, Mateo and Herrera all added to the 40 man, Eovaldi and Ackley DFAd/released. I'll be pretty surprised if that's it, but they are running out of time, deadline at 8 PM EST.

That is a ton of seemingly disposable and interchangeable relievers they are protecting if that is the final list, 23 pitchers total. If that is the final list, Enns and Torrens and Gallegos are the ones I wouldn't be happy about losing, but obviously NY knows way way way more than me.

Ah, OK, they did make additional moves:

Yankees add Miguel Andujar, Jorge Mateo, Dietrich Enns, Giovanny Gallegos, Ronald Herrera and Yefrey Ramirez to the 40-man roster...

Yankees also traded James Pazos to Seattle for RHP Zack Littel, who was assigned to High-A Tampa...

Yankees also DFA'd Nathan Eovaldi, Nick Rumbelow and Joe Mantiply and outrighted Branden Pinder to the RailRiders.

So here is the final 40 man roster going into the Rule 5 draft, a little surprised they didn't protect Torrens after trading McCann but everyone else I understand. Very glad they protected Gallegos, no one seemed to think he'd get protected but that seemed like a mistake to me, one they didn't end up actually making.

Interesting that they just outright released Eovaldi. I know he's hurt but he pitched well this year.
His contract was up after 2017 anyway and he almost certainly won't be able to pitch until 2018, so no reason to protect him and lose someone else.

Also he was arb-eligible and would have made $6 or $7M if they had kept him, his fate was sealed as soon as he got hurt given the timing. I hope he comes back strong, for NY or for someone else, I liked him.

Yep, definitely more intriguing than most of those shuttle relievers. I still don't get why they needed to protect Lindgren (out all of 2017) or Bleier or Barbato, but at least they thinned out that group a bunch.

Thinking about that last, maybe it's a question of strategy and timing, guys will need to be released when NY signs FAs and this way you have a few guys you don't mind losing on the 40 man.

So, for instance, Tyler Webb was in one of those spots and they had to drop him off to clear a spot, they would be way more likely to lose him for good if a team didn't have to keep him on their 25 man roster all year. Not that Tyler Webb is such a huge asset, just saying.

Actually looking at Bleier's numbers now, way better than I remembered/expected. In a world where Brett Cecil gets 4/30, worth protecting Bleier, it seems.

Bleier, 29 year old LHP in the AL East, 2016: 1.96 ERA, 2.67 FIP, 1.04 WHIP, 23 innings
Cecil: 30 year old LHP in the AL East 2016: 3.93 ERA, 3.64 FIP, 1.28 WHIP, 36.2 innings

Lindgren non-tendered, so NY has an open spot on their 40 man for now.

Torrens goes as the #2 pick, to the Reds and then moved to the Padres. Fuck, I called this one, this is a loss, assuming he sticks all year with them.

Four out of the first thirteen picks, the other three I don't think are anything to worry about but Torrens is a real loss.

NY finally makes the Carter signing official, Richard Bleier DFAd off the 40 man to make room but I bet Cashman is hoping to sneak him through unclaimed and get him back.
