The Yankees will be in on Machado and Harper this offseason, Sale, Bumgarner and Goldschmidt next. They also have to make a decision on Betances who’s a free agent after next season, plus buy out arbitration years/extend all the young talent. That payroll is gonna be back to $250 million by 2021.

It's hard to see how Harper would fit at this point, although I guess he could just replace Gardner and they could deal Frazier, but that leaves them without a real backup in CF unless you think Judge or Harper can do that (maybe, but not ideal).

Machado I do think they will go after and they will likely not be the high bidder on (I'd bet Phillies), but he might come anyway, we'll see.

You've been waiting to get that one out of your system for awhile.

Cashman is going to spend money for sure, but I'm not sure that he's going to be willing to waste it. I can see the team being in play for Machado but Harper is unlikely. Sale or Bumgarner are possible but why would they want to sign a past his prime Goldschmidt?

Also the 2019-2020 offseason is a long long way away, let's see how things look after next Tuesday for starters.

I feel like the Diamondbacks would want to hold on to Goldschmidt, he is only two or three seasons away from being their franchise WAR leader. Maybe he will age like a slightly worse Joey Votto? Patrick Corbin is the DBack I expect you guys to sign

But anyway, just saw a rumor that the Nats might be in on Cole Hamels? How expensive could ge be, really, looking at his stats? The next few games are make or break for them, I feel like. It is a talented roster, just dogged by injuries. Will be interesting to see what they do this offseason, with the emergence of Soto and Robles in the wings, Harper is certainly gone.

The Brewers were rumored as a possible Sonny Gray destination even before Suter went out, so here is that again from tonight. He is under contract one more season, it would be amazing if Cashman could recoup some value for him, especially since 2 of the 3 guys he sent the A's are looking like duds currently.

If sonny gray is traded, brewers are probably a great spot for him. They were runners-up for him last year. Their pitching coach Derek Johnson was gray’s pitching coach st Vanderbilt. They could use him.

===========

NY would definitely need at least one external SP then to replace Gray, and Sheffield/Cessa/German/Loaisiga could try to cover the 5th spot.

Yep, no rumors on the other two yet, hopefully Josh Rogers is one.

Hilarious, Joel Sherman mentioned Josh Rogers like two minutes after I did.

"If deal is finalized #Yankees will be sending 3 pitches to #Orioles. Dillon Tate is definitely one and I’ve heard Balt likes Josh Rogers."

More confirmation on Rogers, one more name to come:

Dan Federico‏ @DanJFederico
Looks like Josh Rogers will be joining Dillon Tate in Baltimore. He’s been a pretty good rotation arm in SWB this year (3.95 ERA in 19 GS) but doesn’t have much of a future in NY. Plus, he was another name on the Rule 5 chopping block.

Again no rumors along these lines yet, but hopefully NY will get some international spending money in this deal as they need more to sign the guys already committed to them.

The return for Britton IMO was always going to be overblown in terms of expected vs. reality. No one was ever going to have to give up a top 100 guy for him. Yankees have enough pieces to put together a good package that doesn't touch anything close to a top prospect for them. Tate is not a top prospect anymore.

Some writer said it would be three pitchers, but I'd love to see Thairo Estrada go as the third piece. His health is still a question mark and NY has very able replacements behind him in Avellino and Holder.

Britton trade is agreed to. Cody Carroll going to Orioles too

If it is indeed Carroll, Rogers and Tate for Britton and all is finalized, those 3 all would have had to be protected on the 40-man roster this offseason or risk being lost to Rule 5 and #Yankees have a pitching jam in that area.

Seems like a really fair trade. This is what happens when you have legitimate system depth. I think Baltimore got some interesting arms while Yankees didn't overpay for 2 months of RP work.

It's a great pick up.

Good deal for both teams
Baltimore desperately needed some arms and I think Carroll and Tate could really help them.
The Rogers love I don’t really get but whatever

Good trade for the Yankees. I'd bet the only major league they got is Carroll and he screams "Heath Hembree" to me. This sucks.

So Shreve should get dealt now, probably by Thursday (noon start for NY in Tampa tomorrow, Britton will presumably meet them in NY Thursday).

Rogers and Carroll were both 2015 draft picks, 11th round and 22nd round respectively. Nice job getting value out of a couple of late draft picks by NY.

I wonder what a Danny Duffy/Salvador Perez package would cost, neither are cheap and neither have been that great so that helps. I think their combined luxury tax hit would be about $10M, so still under $197M. I haven't been a big Duffy fan and he really sounded in the offseason like he didn't want to come to NY, but 8 of his last 11 starts he has allowed only 0 or 1 runs. Maybe Frazier/Drury/Wade/Romine/Adams plus a second lower level pitcher?

Or if you really want to get wild, what about a deal based around Sheffield for Realmuto and a simultaneous one led by Sanchez for deGrom?

I usually suck at predictions, but the Britton thing made too much sense.

The starting pitchers available, just plain suck this year. Not to mention half of them are on the DL

Although that guy's timelime is a hilarious line of things that didn't happen.

"Source: #Astros "nearing the finish line" for #Orioles Zach Britton"

"Hearing Jorge Mateo is being discussed as a possible name from the #Athletics going to #Mets in Jeurys Familia trade"

"Source: #Phillies "in the forefront" of Zach Britton trade talks with #Orioles. It's possible they could use a trade piece or two from Manny Machado trade talks for Britton. Situation remains very fluid with many teams involved."

I'm starting to think that it wouldn't be a problem to avoid the starting pitching market. There isn't anyone out there attractive. With Sanchez's injury, get an upgrade on Romine, and call up Sheffield. Our rotation woes are overstated and we're actually losing games at this point because of a RISP issue.

It's a reasonable perspective, but if one of our rotation guys goes down after August 1, we'd be scary thin. Cessa seems like he may have turned a corner into back of the rotation competency, Sonny Gray has shown flashes, Cashman said yesterday Loaisiga will be back, and Sheffield is around the corner. What about trading for Happ and then moving Gray to one of the teams that are allegedly hungry for him (MIL, OAK)? Then you'd have:

Severino
Tanaka
Happ
Sabathia
Cessa/Sheffield/Loaisiga/German/Adams

Then maybe sign Corbin in the offseason for that Gray/Happ spot and let the kids fight it out for the 5th spot in spring training, Sheffield getting the edge all else being equal.

Wade can play third too, and so can Walker if he is still around.
