nada, unless some youth players unexpectedly break through, though Gent and Freiburg stand a good chance of qualifying and Brugge stands a good chance of winding up here after losing in CL qualifiers.

Last year, Pulisic and FJ were the only two Americans to appear in the CL group stage and nobody played in the EL group stage.

Down 2-0 into the 83rd minute in a friendly against Bochum, and having gotten a little clowned in failing to block the earlier shot that made it 2-0, Pulisic becomes a man of action. Just... watch the highlights, skipping to ~60% if you prefer.

If reports are correct, Miazga will return to Vitesse and put an American in the Europa League group stage.

Hrmm, I am unsure if that's good because it gives him the opportunity to play in European competition and for a season more cemented in a first team, or bad because there's no league progression.

Not sure missing the start of preseason to warm a Gold Cup bench helped him all that much either.

Well, if we're questioning these things, we might as well question why in hell he went to Chelsea in the first place when there wasn't a snowball's chance he'd ever see first team action.

I don't understand why any American prospects would go just about anywhere in England at this point.

I might be wearing Pulisic-blinders, but even if you take his case as extraordinary and throw it out it seems like the Bundesliga clubs are so much better at developing younger talent that if you're an American 18 year old, even if your dream was to play in the Premiere League, you'd be better off going to Germany and developing there to then angle for a sale in your early 20s.

There's more money in England than anywhere else. While I want Pulisic to stay in Dortmund as long as possible for development purposes, I find it hard to be overly critical of any young player, American or otherwise, who secures their financial future with a move that makes no practical football sense. The value of these players rise and fall so dramatically that if you can find someone who is willing to give you life changing money in signing on fees and weekly salary, you have to consider it.

I don't know if Miazga got a great deal or not when he moved to Chelsea, but these very young players have very uncertain financial futures at these very young age groups. It's kind of astonishing to me that there isn't more movement at very young ages because it's so easy for your star to burn out and end up middling around in leagues where you make very little.

Yeah, on top of that, you don't even need to play for a first-division team in England in order to have a lucrative career.

And for even more context... you know, it's not the EPL, but the Bundesliga isn't exactly MLS...

(no, I don't know why the two charts are so disparate for England, they're contemporaneous, the latter is from here, go figure)

It's really noticeable how many more American players are going to Germany rather than England at this point. Part of the reason is that it is legally easier to go to Germany (no passport restrictions) whereas you need the right second passport to go to England (something that gives you access to the UK labor market). I also think that US raw materials (e.g. 18 year olds) have improved to the point where more German clubs are interested in giving young guys a whirl. Some work out, some don't, but the resounding success of guys like Pulisic will probably open doors for others. I expect McKennie to be a good advertisement for US youth as well. When you are signing amateurs for no transfer fee, the cost/benefit is in your favor.

As rumored, Chelsea has officially loaned Matt Miazga back to Vitesse. I suppose some stability doesn't hurt. Hopefully he bosses the Eredivisie.

18 year old midfielder Juan Pablo Torres signed for Lokeren in Belgium. He had been with Atlanta-area DA club Concorde Fire this season and Georgia United prior to that. Georgia United has since been absorbed by Atlanta United.

22 year old winger Gboly Ariyibi has gone on loan to MK Dons from Nottingham Forest. Forest signed him from Chesterfield last winter but he never played. He has been a steady League One player for a few seasons, which perhaps is his ceiling.

The long legal ordeal of Keaton Parks is finally, officially over. His transfer to Benfica B has been announced:

He's a wild card / mystery man sort of player. He hasn't played an official game since late 2016 due to his dispute with Varzim. I find it interesting that Benfica is giving him a four year contract; he feels like a player who they are just taking a flyer on, but four years is not a flyer type contract.

Nicolas Defreitas-Hansen, a 16 year old goalkeeper, has apparently joined Everton. He's supposed to be a fairly good prospect, but who knows with young GKs.

Left back Jesus Vazquez (on loan from Tigres) and midfielder Adrian Villa have made their professional debut for Atlante in Copa MX. Villa is a mystery 18 year old from Illinois who just showed up in Mexico this season.

Adu sighting! He's on trial with Sandecja Nowy Saçz in Poland's Ekstraklasa.

Or anyway, he's supposed to be on trial.

The move is not without drama, though, as the club’s manager Radosław Mroczkowski was reportedly unaware the Adu would be joining for a trial before the midfielder arrived in Europe. Mroczkowski added that he doesn’t plan on letting Adu train with the team.

“I just heard someone picked him up from the airport,” Mroczkowski said. “This is not my idea, so let’s face it, the man who wants to have Frank [sic] Adu on the team, I do not accept this, it was not consulted with me. I will not test it, as someone else wants, and they can do it. In my opinion, the club is so ridiculous. Instead of building a team in a sensible way, we are looking for old vacuum cleaners.”
Classic Freddy. I've never seen worse career management, though at this point it's been obvious for years that Adu isn't even trying anymore.

Rubio Rubin signed for Stabæk:

I really hope he turns it around, but his career has been a real disappointment. He was an Eredivisie starter at age 18, but since he got hurt in the fall of 2015 he just hasn't been the same.

Groningen signed a 15 year old left back from the SJ Earthquakes academy, Stuart Ritchie:

The release says that his contract goes into effect in January, which makes sense because he'll be 16 at that point. Like Pulisic, he can move abroad at 16 rather than 18 because he has the right second passport.

TB, what needs to happen, law- or treaty-wise, for Americans who can't get a European passport to move abroad and sign with UEFA clubs at 16?

The approach to the careers of "Professional Children" is something fairly settled in the US as far as the artistic professions go, but for sports careers I don't think there's been a lot of work to structure a solution yet in this country. Maybe there's an analogy in hockey (the Junior Hockey leagues, which play amateurs at 16 and give them stipends but not quite full salaries), but I don't think any other sport has figured out how to facilitate a pro career track for people under 18.

The US would have to join the European Union or the European Economic Area. Or, I suppose, create some sort of new structure to facilitate a common labor market that includes UEFA countries that also supersedes FIFA regulations.

The goal resulted from some truly godawful distribution from one of Ingolstadt's defenders:

Wooten is a first half striker, for some reason. In the previous three 2BL seasons with Sandhausen he's scored 19 goals before the winter break(s) and 4 goals after them.

Haji Wright (Schalke) loaned to Sandhausen for a year.
I'm pleased to see Wright secure a loan to the 2.Bundesliga. He wasn't going to get minutes for Schalke this year and the prospect of playing for Schalke II, who were just relegated to the Oberliga, was grim. I don't know exactly what his prospects for playing time at Sandhausen are, though.

A few other things:

Antonee Robinson made his professional debut in Bolton's League Cup win, starting at left wingback.

15 year old midfielder Lawson Sunderland has joined Levante. I'm guessing he won't be eligible for matches until he turns 16 later this year. I don't know anything about his abilities, but this raised my eyebrow because his dad is Portland's academy director. Never a great look when key FO staff have kids bolting the system ASAP.

No Pulisic in BVB's cup game today. He has a minor injury and there's no point in risking it against very low-level opposition.

Danny Williams on the bench for Huddersfield behind Mooy and Billing. Cameron starts at CB in what is apparently a 3-5-2.

  • De Anza Force (prominent Bay area youth club) goalkeeper Brady Scott is said to be joining FC Köln by a German blog. Supposedly he's pretty good, but I don't really know. Scott was the #3 keeper for the latest U20 World Cup team despite playing up a cycle. Based on that, he'll be the front-runner for the starting job heading into the 2019 U20 cycle.
Scott made the bench for Köln in their DFB Pokal match today because their #2 and #3 keepers are injured. It bodes well that he was viewed as next in line ahead of all the other reserve team and U19 goalkeepers despite his recent arrival. I've heard good things about him.

Central midfielder Kyle Scott (no relation) is on the bench for Chelsea today. Even though he's just keeping a seat warm for Danny Drinkwater (or whichever veteran(s) they sign), I'm surprise he's advanced this far because I assumed he was just U21 roster filler. He got called up to one U20 camp by Tab Ramos this past cycle, but that was it.

Pulisic is starting for Dortmund. Game on FS1.

EDIT: He hadn't had many touches til just now--blazing little run down right side, points where he wants ball, gets it and puts in a nice cross that's shot wide.

Then a long ball to him that could have been tough to handle, he settles right as his feet, gets in another cross.

Shane O'Neill has signed with Excelsior in the Eredivisie. One year deal with a club option for another.

O'Neill spent last season on loan with NAC Breda and helped them win promotion to the top tier. His Cypriot parent club, Apollon Limassol, is incredibly sketchy and effectively acts as a third party ownership loophole for a big-time agent and a local partner. (THIS ARTICLE is a fascinating read, IMO.) He never suited up or played for them during his tenure and whoever advised him to sign with them should be fired with extreme prejudice.

I'm really happy to see O'Neill out from under Apollon's control. He's a solid CB who got derailed by his misguided Cypriot adventure, but he finally built some momentum with NAC where he even captained them at times despite being on loan.

Christian Pulisic, the only American who looks sure to play in the CL, is drawn with Real Madrid, Tottenham and APOEL. It's the second year in a row he'll have the opportunity to showcase himself to his future employers in Spain. ;)

Cameron Carter-Vickers is in Spurs' first team but never plays. I wish they'd loan him out, especially after spending big on Ajax's Davinson Sanchez. Dude needs games and he's hardly gotten any since 2015-16. Last year he didn't even play much for the U23s because he was frequently needed to twiddle his thumbs on the bench as a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency sub. CCV has struggled in preseason friendlies and cup games for Spurs thus far. Send him off to a Championship or League One club in need of a CB, please.

Kyle Scott has made the bench for Chelsea a few times this season, but he feels like a guy making up the numbers waiting for others to get healthy or be purchased rather than someone who is taken seriously. Still, I'm surprised that he's risen to the top of Chelsea's pile of disposable academy guys. Perhaps he can get a symbolic sub appearance against Qarabag before eventually transferring to a Championship club or whatever!

Keaton Parks is with Benfica B and Matthew Olosunde is with Manchester United U23, but, well, I wouldn't hold my breath.

He might only be a Vertonghen or Alderweireld injury away from starting in the EPL, though, and such an event isn't all that unlikely - they've each missed a fair amount of time the past few years.

I think he's further down the depth chart than that. In addition to the Belgians, there's Davinson Sanchez who they just bought for €40m. There's also Kevin Wimmer, who is not overly formidable but who nonetheless was above CCV in the pecking order last year. And then there's Eric Dier, who made 22 starts at CB last season. So basically, CCV would need three CBs to be unavailable and he'd also need Pochettino to be confident enough in him to not slide Dier back to CB. Two CBs if he can move ahead of Wimmer.

I don't like those odds, so I'll take the loan.

Gonzalez has continued to play for Monterrey across both league and cup games despite facing some pretty tough competition in what is a fairly high-priced squad. Monterrey uses a three-man midfield, where he's going up against NTers from Mexico, Uruguay, and Paraguay, as well as a guy who won Libertadores with Boca Juniors. Monterrey are in first place after six games.

Arena is monitoring him according to this report.

Gonzalez is playing as a box-to-box midfielder. While the full US team may be premature, he is definitely looking like part of the core of the next U20 team at the least. IMO he's the most interesting prospect we've had in Mexico for a while.

Europa League draw:

  • Maccabi Tel Aviv (Aaron Schoenfeld) were one of two clubs to make it all the way from the first qualifying round. Schoenfeld contributed an assist in their aggregate win over Austria's Rheindorf Altach. Consistent appearances in Europe propelled them into Pot 2 and they've been drawn with Villarreal, Astana, and Slavia Prague.
  • Vitesse (Matt Miazga) were in Pot 4 and drew Lazio, Nice, and Zulte Waregem.
  • A few youth players are kicking around EL clubs but are unlikely to play: Mukwelle Akale (Villarreal), Brady Scott (Köln), Jonathan Klinsmann (Hertha), and the injured Gedion Zelalem (Arsenal),

Emmanuel Sabbi signed for Hobro in the Danish Superliga.

I've seen a fair amount of Sabbi during the last U20 cycle and I'm not particularly enthusiastic about him. He's quite athletic, but doesn't bring all that much else to the table. He supposedly joined Las Palmas last summer, but he had some sort of paperwork issue and spent the whole year in limbo.

Going to a small club like Hobro is probably his best bet, as clubs like that tend to be more patient with developmental projects since they don't have too many other options.

Reports on 8/12 (which were all admittedly vague) said he'd only be out for "several weeks". I don't think there was a tear, just "damage", whatever that means.

In other news, Bobby Wood scored:

Hamburg beat Köln 3-1 away and are temporarily top of the league! It would be nice for Wood's scoring numbers if they weren't a total clownshow this season.
