On October 9th, 1916, during the second game of the 1916 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers (also known as the Robins), Babe Ruth pitched for Boston against Sherry Smith at Braves Field in Boston. In the first inning, Brooklyn's center fielder Henry Myers hit an inside the park home run. Boston tied in the third as short-stop Everett Scott leadoff the inning with a triple and was driven home by a Babe Ruth ground-out. In the bottom of the 14th inning with the game tied at 1-1 and Ruth and Smith still pitching, the Sox first baseman Dick Hoblitzel got a lead off walk, and a sacrifice bunt from left fielder Duffy Lewis got him to second base with one out. A pinch runner Mike McNally (in his debut game) was substituted for Hoblitzer, and Del Gainer pinch hit for Larry Gardner and singled to drive home the winning run from second.
