2nd in the American League
Manager: Jack Barry
Most fans don't know that before the modern day all-star game, each league played their own all-star exhibition game. The game was played in last year's pennant winner's park, with that home team against an all-star team from the rest of the league. As the Red Sox won the 1916 WS, they played host at Fenway to the American League All-Star team in 1917.
The game was notable in that the all-star outfield was arguably the best outfield to ever take the field at one time. Ty Cobb played right, Tris Speaker in center and 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson in left. To this day, they remain the numbers 1, 3 and 6 career best batting averages in the record books.
The pitching matchup for the game was Walter Johnson for the all-stars versus Babe Ruth for the Red Sox.
The Sox won, 2-1. --monbo jumbo 22:09, 31 July 2006 (EDT)
