Willard Nixon and Don Larsen both battled into the 11th inning unscathed. Only one would make it through. Nixon retired the first two Yankees in the inning, but Mickey Mantle reached 2nd on an error by Ted Williams. Willard got Yogi Berra on a lineout to end the frame and gave the Sox a chance for a W.

The first two Red Sox to bat in the 11th reached on errors. The third, Billy Klaus, drew a walk from the tiring Larsen. Tommy Byrne was then called upon out of the Yankees bullpen to replace Don. His assignment, a Ted Williams looking to atone for his error in the top half of the inning. Byrne was understandably careful, however, with the bases loaded he was unduly cautious, issuing Teddy the free pass and sending Billy Consolo plateward.
