Series Information
Oakland Athletics (99-63) vs. San Francisco Giants (92-70) The 1989 World Series featured two teams from California. In fact, the two teams were just across San Francisco Bay from each other. The Oakland A's were appearing in their second straight Fall Classic after being beaten by the LA Dodgers in 5 games the year before. The A's had the best record in baseball and were fueled by the bash brothers Mark McGuire and Jose Canseco and the leagues best pitching led by Dave Stewart. The A's cruised through the regular season and won the AL West by 7 games. They then beat the Toronto Blue Jays four games to one in the ALCS to advance to the World Series. The A's cross Bay rivals, the San Francisco Giants, had won the NL West by 3 games over the San Diego Padres with a balanced attack of hitting and pitching. The Giants then went on to beat the Chicago Cubs four games to one in the NLCS.
In the World Series the A's batters crushed the Giants pitchers while their pitching silenced the Giants bats. The A's rolled over the Giants sweeping the series 4-0. However, this Bay Series ended up being over shadowed by the massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit the area before game 3 and caused chaos and destruction in the two cities.
- Managers: Tony LaRussa (Oakland) and Roger Craig (San Francisco)
- Venues: Oakland Coliseum (Oakland, CA) and Candlestick Park (San Francisco, CA)
