2002-2003 -- Bartolo Colon or Javier Vazquez from Montreal for Shea Hillenbrand and Freddy Sanchez or Casey Fossum and Freddy Sanchez
From SoSH
Overview
In the winter of 2002-2003, the Red Sox entered serious negotiations with the Expos over Montreal starting pitchers Javier Vazquez and Bartolo Colon; the Expos needed to pare payroll, so one of them had to go. The Sox offered Freddy Sanchez and Casey Fossum for Vazquez, but the Expos wanted Shea Hillenbrand involved in the trade somehow, and the Sox offered Hillenbrand and a prospect for Colon but balked at Montreal's price of Hillenbrand and Fossum. The trade talks collapsed when the Yankees engineered a three team deal for Colon, completed on January 15, 2003, for the purpose of keeping Colon and Vazquez from the Red Sox.
