2003 Gulf Coast League Red Sox Season Ending Report

Final Record: 33-26

How did we do?

By record, quite well. The Red Sox won the Southern Division with a 33-26 Record. The GCL does have a playoff... and the Red Sox faced the GCL Pirates in the first round (1 game), with the winner facing the GCL Braves, who had the best record overall. The GCL Red Sox played a very competitive game, but lost to the Pirates 4-3 in 12 innings.

That being said, from a prospect point of view... it is more difficult to form an answer. Unlike previous years, the GCL Red Sox had very few 2003 Draft picks on the team, and an abnormally large number of Rehab assignments from all over the organization.

Players

Rehabbers

I'm going to first take some time to talk about the Rehab assignments, just to get that out of the way.

The following players and their nominal Organizational placement played in Rehab for the GCL Sox this year:

  • Osmar Castillo (A/A+ - Augusta/Sarasota) - 5 games
  • Stefan Bailie (A+ - Sarasota) - 5 games
  • Kenny Perez (A+ - Sarasota) -7 games
  • Eric West (A - Augusta) - 6 games
  • Chris Coste (AAA - Pawtucket) - 11 games
  • Sheldon Fulse (A+ - Sarasota) - 3 games
  • Brian Loyd (AA - Portland) - 6 games
  • Raul Nieves (AA - Portland) - 6 games
  • Ramiro Mendoza (ML - Boston) - 2 games
  • Aneudis Mateo (A - Augusta) - 3 games
  • Greg Montalbano (AA - Portland) - 3 games
  • Chris Smith (A - Augusta) - 3 games
  • Robert Person (MLB - Boston) - 1 game

It seems to me that this large number of games by players who are beyond this level may have artificially inflated the record of this team.

Well, who are the real players/prospects for this level?

First, a small note...

I haven't seen these players. I have no defensive stats for these players. I have no idea how they look. I can only base my opinions solely on the stats provided

2003 Draftees

  • 2nd Rd pick Michael Hall (18 YO), OF from Walton HS in Georgia. Played in 21 games with the following line: .227/.400/.318. Showed some double power (6 Doubles in 15 total Hits) and the ability to get on base (19 walks (4 more walks than hits)).

Question is, will he develop like Chad Spann, who had better power but lower OBP (.222/.271/.379) in the GCL the year before? I like the fact that he gets on base. Will likely jump at least to Lowell next year... and might make the jump to Augusta

  • 9th Rd Pick Jonathan Wilson (20 YO), RHP from Northeastern JC. Pitched in 10 games (7 starts), but like most of the 2003 Draft Pitchers, averaged only 3 innings per appearance. He went 0-2 with a 1.76 ERA (3.52 RA), 1.30 WHIP, 1.8 K/BB, 8.80 K/9. Likely to jump to Lowell.
  • 15th Rd Pick Christopher Turner (19 YO), OF from Texarkana JC. Played in 35 games with decent stats: .254/.338/.405. 13 of 32 hits went for Extra Bases. Likely to jump to Lowell or Augusta
  • 26th Rd Pick Jason Ramos (21 YO), Infielder from St. Petersburg JC. Played in 5 games: .200/.333/.200
  • 29th Rd Pick Douglas Fink (20 YO), RHP from Manatee JC. Pitched to 5 batters in one game, giving up an earned run and picking up the loss.
  • 41st Rd Pick Lance Schartz (20 YO), C from Garden City CC. Played 9 games in the GCL; .240/.321/.360. Also spent time in Lowell. Will probably jump to Lowell full time next season. (Odd note - was drafted in the 43rd Rd by the Red Sox in the 2002 Draft)
  • 49th Rd Pick, Jason Smith (19 YO), RHP from Bourne HS. Signed late... and at least some will say the Sox burned a year of control unnecessarily. He started one game, faced 9 batters, giving up 2 hits and a run.

Dominican/Venezuelan Prospects

I would state that these players tended to have the better stats and played more than the first group. Of course, for all these players, it is at least the second year in the organization.

  • Dirimo Chavez - Dirimo is a middle infielder who should make the jump to Augusta. Had a really nice final month as he started to play regularly. Final stats: .342/.413/.378. Struck out only 8 times in 111 ABs.
  • Salvador Paniagua - A Catcher who surprised after a rather poor season in the DSL in '02. May jump to Augusta or Lowell. Final Stats: .308/.345/.446
  • Alexander Penalo - Another middle infielder who will jump up a level or two next year. Put up stats very similar to his DSL numbers: .305/.370/.402
  • Argimiro Guanchez - Another surprise from the VSL who started out like gang busters before settling into his final numbers: 5-0, 1.95 ERA, 29K/9BB
  • Elpidio Hilario - Another relief pitcher... 3-3, 3.76 ERA, 21K/15BB
  • Dernier Orozco - 14 relief appearances with a deceptive record: 4-2, 6.07 ERA, 21K/4BB
  • Alexander Soriano - 2-1, 4.07 ERA, 20K/14 BB in 14 relief appearances

Other first year players

  • Thomas Bawden - An Undrafted Free Agent Signing, plays middle infield. Final Stats: .214/.298/.262
  • Edwin Boitel - Undrafted Free Agent (?), played 29 games in the outfield. Final Stats: .310/.365/.395. Probably deserves a bump to Lowell.
  • Adam Blackley - International Free Agent from Australia. Played in 7 games with some very nice numbers, 0.73 ERA, 1.09 RA, 0.73 WHIP, 24K/5BB in 24 2/3 innings. Likely Lowell Bound
  • Curt Borland - Undrafted Free Agent. Old for the League. Played in 13 games with very good numbers (with one small problem... lots of unearned runs). Final Stats: 6-0, 0.83 ERA, 2.28 RA, 1.13 WHIP, 38K/7BB in 43 1/3 IP. Considering age, needs to be bumped to Augusta (at least).
  • Tyler Pelland - 9th Rd Pick from '02, signed in Mid August of '02. Was a very good looking pitcher in 39 Innings... good enough to be included in the trade to Cincinatti for Scott Williamson. Final Stats: 3-4, 1.62 ERA, 34K/18BB.
  • Scott White - 3rd Rd Pick from '02... was miserable this year. In 38 games, put up these numbers: .168/.241/.176. Had exactly 1 extra base hit. Needs to do something next year... or this will become the first high profile bust of the new administration.

Repeaters

You hate to see repeaters at this level... but at least the majority improved.

  • Peter Ciofrone: 2002 Stats: .243/.333/.360; 2003 Stats: .276/.381/.366
  • Carlos De La Cruz: 2002 Stats: .168/.234/.217; 2003 Stats: .270/.339/.358
  • Heriberto Guzman: 2002 Stats: .168/.234/.217; 2003 Stats: .248/.322/.510 (9 Doubles, 5 Triples, 7 HRs)
  • Devoris Williams: 2002 Stats: .088/.272/.112; 2003 Stats: .202/.298/.298 (Likely to be waived)
  • Junior Frias: 2002 Stats: 2-3.5.83 ERA, 21K/13BB, in 41 2/3 IP; 2003 Stats: 2-4, 6.06 ERA, 17K/19BB in 32 2/3 IPs. (You never know with Pitchers... they could promote him to Augusta and he will be lights out. But, he regressed from a poor '02 so a waiving would not surprise me)
  • Kyle Jackson: This is a Jason Smith situation... pitched in 2 innings in 2002. Had a very nice year and earned a promotion to Lowell at the end of the year. Final Stats: 5-2, 1.85 ERA, 37K/11BB in 58 1/3 IP.
