2005 Greenville Bombers Season-Ending Report

  • Record 72-66

What is the South Atlantic League?

The South Atlantic League (SAL) is full season A-ball league. SAL teams are generally made up of players who have been through at least a year of rookie league and/or short-season A-Ball. A few players from the 2004 Draft Class and a few international players may get the immediate call to duty in Full-Season A-Ball.

The SAL is made up of 16 teams in 2 divisions.

How did we do?

Well enough that our new affiliation seems happy. Greenville finished both halves of the season over .500... and gave the city it's first winning team since, I believe, 1998.

Players

First... a note of caution:

I haven't seen these players. I have no idea how they look. I can only base my opinions solely on the stats provided.

Offensive Player of the Year:
Andrew Pinckney

Andrew was named to the post-season SAL All-Star team, and finished the season with a line of .311/.362/.535 while playing in a team high 128 games. Andrew led the team in all the critical cummulative categories (Runs - 91, Hits - 158, Doubles - 33, Triples - 9, HR - 21, RBI - 98), was a perfect 6/6 in stolen base attempts, walked 36 times while striking out 78.

Pitcher of the Year:
Andrew Dobies

This was a very difficult pick. There were no players that stood out, but quite a few which were good. I decided on Andrew for a couple of reasons. Andrew had 10 good starts, going 5-3 in 57 1/3 innings, finishing with a 3.59 ERA. Now, based on those numbers alone, others would seem to merit this pick. However, Andrew only allowed 2 unearned runs, walked only 12, gave up only 5 HRs and, perhaps most importantly, struck out 52. When you look at the rest of the staff, Dobies peripherals stand out (in comparison with the rest).

OK... those are the stars. What about the rest?

That's a fair enough question. I'll split this up into various categories.

2005 Signees

Offensive Players
  • Jeff Natale: The 32nd round draft pick out of Trinity simply picked up where he left off in Lowell, going .338/.463/.544 in 47 games for Greenville. Jeff had 19 doubles, 4 triples and 2 HRs, walking 28 times while striking out only 14 times.
  • Jeff Corsaletti: The 6th round draft pick out of Florida had a fine start to his professional career, going .357/.429/.490 in 59 games, hitting 17 doubles, 2 triples and 4 HRs, walking 32 times while striking out 38 times.
Pitching
  • Kevin Guyette: The 10th rounder got the bump up from Lowell and participated in 12 games, including 3 starts, going 30 1/3 innings. Kevin finished with a record of 4-0 with a save and a 3.26 ERA. Kevin walked 6 and struck out 28 in 30 1/3 innings.
