The 2005 Pawtucket Red Sox Season-Ending Report

  • Final Record: 75-69

What is the International League

The International League (IL) is a full season AAA league. IL teams are generally made up of 4 types of players: Prospects (Players that the team considers on the fast track to the majors), Semi-Prospects (Players that have a chance to make the majors, but are not thought of as highly as the prospects), AAAA Players (Players who can fill in at the ML level), and Filler (Players with a remote chance for the Majors who are necessary to fill the roster). It is very rare to see a first year professional player in the league.

The International League is made up of 14 teams (Divided in 3 divisions) in the Eastern United States.

How did we do?

The Pawsox finished above .500 and was in the playoff race until the final week of the season. In my view, it was the best managerial job done in the Sox minor league system, especially considering the lack of starting pitching that the Pawsox contended with throughout the entire year.

Player Evaluations

First, a note of caution...

I haven't seen these players much. I don't trust my few viewings are worth much against the weight of the statistical record. I will only base my opinions solely on the stats provided.

Offensive Player of the Year:

As I have said, I like to give my awards to players who were around for the entire season. So, I have decided to give this award to Kelly, who played 102 games with a line of .253/.352/.507 with 16 doubles and a team high 26 HRs while playing catcher. Kelly walked 46 times while striking out a total of 116 times. Kelly also led the team in RBI (75) and was third in runs scored (60).

Pitcher of the Year:

Last year's Rule 5 pick, Lenny was given a chance to start for the entire year and showed good promise, going 6-3 with a 3.15 ERA in 23 games (22 starts) and 108 2/3 innings. Lenny gave up 109 hits, walked 35 and struck out 93. On a slightly negative note, Lenny allowed 13 unearned runs.

OK... How about the rest?

That's a fair enough question. I'll split this up into various categories. In each of the two main categories, there will be a subsection under Pitching: Relievers who started. This is an important subsection as the Sox had 8 pitchers who primarily pitched in relief start at least one game for the Pawsox.

  • Luis Figueroa: Luis played in 109 games around the infield, going .289/.334/.400 with 22 doubles and 7 HRs. Luis walked 29 times, struck out 28 times, and showed a complete lack of stolen base abilities by going 2/8 in SB attempts.
