Positional Team Needs
Updated daily with reports from Rotoworld and ESPN's Rumor Central (plus the occasional overview such as Cafardo's in a recent Sunday Globe), leavened throughout with editorial comment.
All listed numbers are Bill James projected OBP / SA in their 2006 MLB or affiliate park, except where noted.

AL
| Team | Notes |
| Baltimore Orioles | Signed 3B / 1B / OF Aubrey Huff (.346 / .472) as DH. Signed LF Jay Payton (.324 / .414) and resigned 1B Kevin Millar (.364 / .447); Jay Gibbons (.325 / .464) claims to be 100% after last year's knee injury and is likely to relegate one of them to a platoon role, the choice probably coming down to how good his OF defense is. There's still the possibility of adding another bat to the mix, either by signing Shannon Stewart or trading excess young pitching for Marcus Thames, Ben Broussard, Richie Sexson, or Adam Dunn. Still rumors of a Tejada deal, either to the White Sox for Uribe+ or to the Angels as a 3B. |
| Boston Red Sox | Signed J. D. Drew (.398 / .493) (pending resolution of his contract) to play RF and Julio Lugo (.343 / .399) to play SS. Unlikely to trade LF Manny Ramirez, and if they don't, has Coco Crisp (.337 / .419) or Wily Mo Pena (.332 / .496) to deal to a team that needs a CF, although they would need to get full value for either and would need a good 4th OF as a replacement. Would like to trade 3B Mike Lowell (.341 / .452) and move 1B Kevin Youkilis (.395 / .433) back to 3B, but it's unclear who would then play 1B. Re-signed Doug Mirabelli to be the backup catcher. |
| New York Yankees | Signed Doug Mientkiewicz (.356 / .401) to platoon with Andy Phillips (.309 / .461) or Rule 5 draftee Josh Phelps (.316 / .4666 PECOTA) at first base; also interested in Richie Sexson. May deal 4th OF Melky Cabrera (.351 / .411) and would re-sign Bernie Williams (who will probably otherwise retire) to replace him. Also looking for a backup C and a utility INF. |
| Tampa Bay Devil Rays | Their long-range plan has never been clear (to them or anyone) as long as the jury was out on the best eventual position for 3B B. J. Upton (.348 / .396 but still just 22). Things were complicated further by acquiring 3B/OF Joel Guzman (.257 / .352 MLE after projecting .318 / .440 the year before, and 3 months younger than Upton) from the Dodgers, drafting 3B mega-prospect Evan Longoria (ETA 2008), and signing Japanese 3B (and reportedly 2B and CF) Akinori Iwamura. Earlier reports had Upton getting another year to work on his 3B defense and Iwamura as an upgrade to Cantu (.303 / .441) at 2B, with Cantu being traded to unknown suitors. Now they're talking Iwamura at 3B, which could mean Upton in CF or LF and hot comoddity Rocco Baldelli (.348 / .495) traded for pitching (which is likely to happen eventually); they say that LF Carl Crawford (.339 / .457) is not on the block. OF prospect Elijah Dukes (.349 / .415 MLE), after playing 1B in the AFL, probably starts the season there in AAA as an eventual upgrade to Ty Wigginton (.328 / .455) or Greg Norton (.331 / .428), while Guzman likely plays RF and some 1B in AAA and is on the trading block a year later unless he beats out Dukes. Reportedly interested in Darren Erstad for 1B. |
| Toronto Blue Jays | Signed DH Frank Thomas (.380 / .523) to replace Frank Catalanotto. Phenom Adam Lind (.396 / .590) will platoon in LF with Reed Johnson (.349 / .421). Re-signed CF Vernon Wells (.344 / .508) to a 7-year extension at $18 AAV, which is a fair price if he's actually a 53 VORP player (he's been 61.9, 23.2, 23.8, 58.9 the last 4 years). Talking to the Mets about dealing Alex Rios (.350 / .472) for Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman or a pitching prospect. Re-upped Greg Zaun (.352 / .393) to be their backstop. Signed Royce Clayton (.307 / .338) to be in the SS mix with John McDonald (.283 / .307), but Ricciardi has said they're open to another signing up the middle -- which we're guessing would be Belliard but only if the price is irresistable. Hill (.351 / .400) would then move to SS. Signed Matt Stairs (.351 / .422) as 10th player. Possibly needs a backup C as an upgrade to Jason Phillips (.310 / .371). |
| Cleveland Indians | Were rumored to have some interest in Drew or Gonzalez and ended up signing David Dellucci (.350 / .460) to play LF and Trot Nixon (.373 / .457) to play RF, with Shin-Soo Choo (.360 / .432) either going back to AAA or serving as 10th player. They still have Casey Blake (.327 / .435) and Jason Michaels (.357 / .413) as OF reserves. Blake should also get some PT at 1B, where they've been looking to upgrade Ryan Garko (.341 / .442), perhaps by moving Hafner to 1B, hence rumored interest in bringing Manny back. Signing Nixon presumably means they're no longer interested in Lastings Milledge as rumored. |
| Chicago White Sox | The OF now and for the future is a muddle. The logical thing to do would be to get a big LF bat as an upgrade to Podsednik (.339 / .368 and probably the worst hitting MLB regular relative to position), give former top prospect CF Brian Anderson (.324 / .421) another year to blossom, and give current top prospect Ryan Sweeney (.310 / .377 MLE) another AAA year to work on his hitting and CF defense (he is already good in a corner). However, their reported interest in trading for Roco Baldelli, Aaron Rowand, Lastings Milledge, Chone Figgins, Coco Crisp, or Melky Cabrera suggests that they're more concerned with CF than LF (where Drew was the only person they've been reported interested in). They have #2 prospect 3B Josh Fields (.347 / .481, but -33/150 on D despite reports of decency) making Joe Crede available in trade. They are also reportedly interested in upgrading Uribe (.296 / .446) at SS, perhaps in a deal for Miguel Tejada. |
| Detroit Tigers | Dombrowski had said that the team is pretty much set with the trade for Sheffield, but current rumored interest in Baldelii and Church suggests they're aware of the shortcomings of LF Craig Monroe (.315 / .468); earlier they had said he wasn't on the block, however. They'll deal either OF Marcus Thames (.332 / .504) or 1B Chris Shelton (a questionable .363 / .489) and keep the other as a 10th player and platoon partner / injury insurance for re-signed 1B Sean Casey (.363 / .433), even though he has no platoon split. Even if they don't add an OF, it might make more sense to sell high on Monroe and give Thames his shot. Three unspecified teams have inquired about Shelton, who still has an option year left. |
| Kansas City Royals | Word now is that Alex Gordon (.384 / .535) will be handed 3B and the defensively challenged Mark Teahen (.366 / .496) will be moved to an OF corner, presumably RF where he'd put Reggie Sanders (.318 / .452) on the trading block (although he's just a platoon bat now). They want to get younger (not necessarily better) in LF by dealing Emil Brown (.351 / .448) to make room for Justin Huber (.346 / .454); they are also reportedly interested in Ryan Church, although his bat isn't better than either. They've filled a bench spot by dealing for 1B Ross Gload (.352 / .495) to backup Ryan Sheely (.341 / .503). David DeJesus settles in CF with either Joey Gathright (.345 / .330) or Shane Costa (.324 / .439) as his backup (with Gload, there's probably no longer room for both, even if both Brown and Sanders are dealt). Being bad allows them further patience with SS Angel Berroa (.300 / .377). |
| Minnesota Twins | Re-signed LF Rondell White (.323 / .418), who should rival Jay Payton as the second-worst bat at the position (after Scott Podsednik). Jason Kubel (.316 / .439), limited by knee problems, gets a shot at DH; although ZiPS is much more optimistic about him, he still projects as the second-worst DH. Signed 3B Jeff Cirillo (.340 / .378) as a backup to Nick Punto (.344 / .345); either one projects to be the second-worst-hitting 3B (after Pedro Feliz). |
| Los Angeles Angels | LF Juan Rivera (.353 / .498) will miss at least the start of the season after breaking a tibia in winter ball, so DH Garret Anderson (.317 / .445) moves to LF and newly signed Shea Hillenbrand (.326 /.450) becomes the DH or 1B. They have been intent on adding a big bat but seem clueless to the fact that the obvious person to upgrade is Anderson. Instead, they've focused on 1B and 3B, where they have (or had) youthful alternatives. At 3B, they're reportedly interested in Joe Crede, Chad Tracy, and Miguel Tejada, and interest may intensify now that Dallas McPherson (.295 / .492) is out for the season with back surgery. The alternatives are SS-by-trade Maicer Izturis (.345 / .392) and 10th man Chone Figgins (.348 / .391). Figgins could be dealt to a team that needs a CF or 2B, while Izturis could be traded to a team that needs a SS. At 1B, they have Casey Kotchman (.305 / .364) deserving a last shot after a year lost to mono, Kendry Morales (.314 / .443) perhaps needing less than a year in AAA to blossom, and Robb Quinlan (.341 / .458) as a stopgap (and platoon partner for Kotchman), but they're interested in Todd Helton. Earlier interest in Manny Ramirez and Vernon Wells suggested they were willing to move Rivera, but that's off the table now. They probably have another year before they have to worry about SS Orlando Cabrera (.324 / .392) blocking Brandon Wood (.266 / .463 and +14/150 on D); the present dilemma is that Wood means that Erick Aybar (.292 / .369 and -6/150) doesn't have a AAA spot to hone his game. Before the McPherson news, they were reportedly intent on either dealing Aybar or dealing Izturis to make room for him as the MLB backup SS. |
| Seattle Mariners | Signed Jose Guillen (.329 / .466) to play RF with Ichiro Suzuki (.367 / .413) playing CF. Traded potential 4th OF Chris Snelling for 2B Jose Vidro (.363 / .440), who will supplant Ben Broussard (.327 / .460) at DH; Broussard is on the trading block. Presumably, CF Jeremy Reed (.335 / .413) is now the 4th OF while top CF prospect Adam Jones (.316 / .434) gets another year in AAA. They may still have a mind to get big-bat LF like Floyd or Manny Ramirez in order to move Raul Ibanez (.343 / .461) to 1B and deal Richie Sexson (.349 / /506), but that seems like a longshot. |
| Texas Rangers | Signed Kenny Lofton (.356 / .386) to play CF, probably in a platoon with Marlon Byrd (.337 / .396). Brad Wilkerson (.351 / .437) moves to LF and Nelson Cruz (.342 / .495) inherits RF. Signed Frank Catalanotto (.369 / .443) as a DH; he'll also need to be platooned, probably with switch-hitter Jason Botts (.345 / .472). Catalanotto will get LF PT and Wilkerson could see time in RF, especially if Cruz falters vs. RHP. |
| Oakland Athletics | Signed Mike Piazza (.344 / .467) to DH and Erubiel Durazo ( .344 / .393 MLE) as his backup. Billy Beane says that Nick Swisher (.357 / .488) moves back to LF and Dan Johnson (.354 / .439 after raking in AAA) gets another shot at 1B, which given the BJ projections seems better than pursuing Nixon or Floyd as rumored earlier. The only credible rumor is a blockbuster that would land Lastings Milledge (and some combination of Heilman, Humber, and Pelfrey) for Harden, Blanton, or Haren. Also reported to be interested in Jeremy Reed, which sounds like Beane just going after devalued talent. |

NL
| Team | Notes |
| Atlanta Braves | Non-tendered 2B Marcus Giles. Although they could sign Belliard, the current favorite is former OF Kelly Johnson (.370 / .452), who is being re-converted back to the INF after missing 2005 with TJ surgery. If he doesn't pan out in ST, they could make do with the subpar D of 3B Willy Aybar (.351 / .418), convert newly acquired rookie SS Brent Lillibridge (.349 / .428 PECOTA) or rush prospect Martin Prado (.323 / .378 PECOTA). Dealt 1B Adam LaRoche to make room for a platoon of Scott Thorman (.335 / .494) and FA signee Craig Wilson (.344 / .463); earlier there was talk of Sexson. Boras had indicated that Andruw Jones will waive his no-trade in his walk year if the destination is right, and Will Carroll of BP has reported that the Braves are eager to unload him in a three or four-team blockbuster involving one or more of Rocco Baldelli, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Markakis (ESPN adds Chris Duffy and reports that they'd like the new guy to hit leadoff), and possibly the Rangers (Mark Teixeira), or Marlins (Dontrelle Willis). The new OF could play LF with Ryan Langerhans (.356 / .425) moving to CF and it's possible they could land an OF as an upgrade to Langerhans without moving Jones. |
| Florida Marlins | Would love to upgrade Alfredo Amezaga (.326 / .346) in CF by trading for Chris Denorfia, Baldelli, Crisp, or a prospect. Are reportedly working on signing arb-eligible 3B Miguel Cabrera (.412 / .575) to a Pujols-like contract. |
| New York Mets | Signed Moises Alou (.355 / .481) to replace Cliff Floyd in LF. Trading for backup CF Ben Johnson (.317 / .421) allows them to either deal CF Lastings Milledge (.356 / .434), or give him a year he doesn't need in AAA, after which they can decide whether he has more value in trade or as an overqualified corner OF for them. Current rumors have him bundled with Aaraon Heilman, Philip Humber of Mike Pelfrey to upgrade either the rotation or Shawn Green (.353 / .459) in RF. |
| Philadelphia Phillies | Wanted a big RHB for RF to balance Howard and Utley, but were outbid for Soriano and Vernon Wells proved unavailable, so settled for non-tender FA Jayson Werth (.336 / .427). Signed C Rod Barajas (.288 / .417) to back up rookie Carlos Ruiz (.352 / .469), relegating Chris Coste (.321 / .419) to a utility role. Are willing to deal CF Aaron Rowand (.328 / .433) and go with Shane Victorino (.319 / .401). |
| Washington Nationals | They hate CF Ryan Church (.337 / .445) enough that they dealt for Chris Snelling (.342 / .410) to play LF instead; interest in Church remains high. Alex Escobar (.350 / .492) finally gets a shot to play everyday in CF. They dumped 2B Jose Vidro and most of his big contract; Felipe Lopez (.348 / .416) moves to 2B and Christian Guzman (.299 / .366) reclaims SS. |
| Chicago Cubs | Signing LF Cliff Floyd (.354 / .471) to platoon in LF with Matt Murton (.383 / .481) clarifies the OF picture a good deal. As of now, FA signee Alfonso Soriano (.331 / .522) is the CF, but they reportedly would rather play him in RF and trade Jacque Jones (.326 / .459). That would open up CF for either rookie Felix Pie (.337 / .480) or a trade for Aaron Rowand or Ryan Church. No talk of upgrading SS, even though Ronny Cedeno (.308 / .377) and Cesar Izturis (.307 / .339) project poorly. Mark DeRosa (.333 / .408 in Texas) is the new 2B. |
| Cincinnati Reds | Chris Denorfia (.379 / .463) plays RF and Ryan Freel (.354 / .378) is 10th player again if he or Denorfia isn't traded, but they have talked to Griffey about playing RF in ST with an eye to one of the two playing CF, a good idea considering Griffey’s defense these days. Also reported to be interested in trading Dunn, although it's unclear whether they'd replace him or just remix the remaining trio (they were interested in Luis Gonzalez). Needs a 1B but will settle for a RHB to platoon with Scott Hatteberg (.359 / .385). |
| Houston Astros | They've soured on Morgan Ensberg (.380 / .479) and want to deal him and probably go with Mike Lamb (.341 / .441). Dealt CF Willy Taveras and could still in theory be looking to upgrade his replacement, Chris Burke (.324 / .393); they'll see if ST if Jason Lane (.331 / .460) can handle it defensively after playing there in winter ball (he's off the trading block now that Burke has moved into the starting lineup). Signed Carlos Lee (.350 / .514) to play LF forever rather than gamble on a comeback by Lane as a stopgap until top RF prospect Hunter Pence arrives in 2008. Luke Scott (.366 / .528) moves from LF to RF, although it’s unclear he can handle it defensively. |
| Milwaukee Brewers | They have a great SS in Hall (.330 / .485) and a decent one in Hardy (.325 / .403), and a LF in Mench (.332 / .466) they badly want to upgrade and a CF in Brady Clark (.352 / .374) that they would also like to improve on. So they’re moving Hall to LF, where he loses 23 runs of value, or CF, where he loses 10. Little talk of who might play LF if Hall plays CF, while the only CF rumor besides an interest in Roberts has been of a trade of Clark for Clint Barmes (the idea apparently being to populate the OF with as many good-fielding SS as possible). Over in RF, they're smitten with Corey Hart (.338 / .483) and want to dump Geoff Jenkins (.351 / .476). Surpisingly (or not), there's no talk of giving LHB Gabe Gross (.353 / .414) a promotion from 4th OF to a share of the CF job. |
| Pittsburgh Pirates | Dealt for 1B Adam LaRoche (.353 / .530) to fill their big stated need for a power LH bat (the former 1B of the future, big Brad Eldred (.310 / .541 projection for 2006) was limited to 70 unimpressive AAA PA by a thumb injury and was awful in the AFL and winter ball). That presumably puts an end to the conversion of Ryan Doumit (.361 / .450) from C to 1B (where he'd lose 31 runs of value) and gives them a tradeable surplus between him and Ronny Paulino (.351 / .413). The RF is Xavier Nady (.333 / .455), who would be an ideal 10th player (which is to say they could really still use a RF and deal one of the catchers). They reportedly plan to move RF / CF Jose Bautista (.344 / .435) back to his natural position, 3B, where he's reportedly a plus defender, and move Freddy Sanchez (.364 / .436) to 2B, supplanting Jose Castillo (.317 / .406). Chris Duffy (.343 / .388) has been handed the CF job after hitting .365 / .430 / .500 in his last 107 PA while reportedly playing great D; if that's helium, Nate McLouth (.320 / .392 but 2 years younger) remains an alternative, though not an attractive one. |
| St. Louis Cardinals | Chris Duncan (.351 / .511) should be taking over LF, at least vs. RHP. They want an upgrade over Encarnacion (.322 / .433) in RF, and John Rodriguez (.343 / .444) probably doesn’t have the glove. They were one of the three finalists for Luis Gonzalez and hence they're willing to bite the bullet and play Duncan in RF. |
| Arizona Diamondbacks | Chris Young (.341 / .514) takes over in CF. They're claiming that Eric Byrnes (.316 / .453) is moving to LF, but it would certainly make more sense to give former #1 prospect Scott Hairston (.342 / .516) a shot at the job instead. Young does give them an OF surplus, which means that either Byrnes, Hairston, or incumbent 4th OF Jeff DaVanon (.366 / .401) could be dealt. They're interested in dealing 3B Chad Tracy (.352 / .473), perhaps replacing him with Ensberg or rookie 2B Alberto Callaspo (.346 / .418 PECOTA but stellar D). |
| Colorado Rockies | Traded for Willy Taveras (.341 / .349) as an upgrade to Cory Sullivan (.335 / .402, and in Coors no less). Ryan Spilborghs (.382 / .476) looks like a 4th OF, as he doesn’t seem to have the glove for CF. Clint Barmes (.305 / .398) is expected to lose his job to uber-propsect Troy Tulowitzki (.340 / .434), but that projection suggests he's an upgrade to nobody, despite finishing 7th in the Fielding Bible Awards poll. |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | They have a surplus of hitters after signing Nomar Garciaparra (.364 / .504) to play 1B and Luis Gonzalez (.372 / .461) to play LF, with Andre Ethier (.367 / .466) moving to RF to replace J.D. Drew. The signings block 1B James Loney (.360 / .460 at age 23) and RF / CF Matt Kemp (.365 / .503 at age 22), whom they have apparently soured on; both are now presumably on the block and could be packaged with Ethier and excess pitching for Rocco Baldelli or Andruw Jones. It's unclear whether Andy LaRoche (.373 / .462 at age 23, and +14/150 in AAA) will be taking over 3B, and if he is, no word on whether Wilson Betemit (.331 / .443) is available for trade or will be kept as a super-utilityman. There remains the remote option of having Gaciaparra play 3B and Loney 1B if LaRoche and/or Betemit is dealt in one of the aforementioned blockbusters. |
| San Diego Padres | It’s a shame; they’ve got offensive candidates galore for the vacancy in LF but most seem to be defensive liabilities, if not downright butchers. They'll hope that Termel Sledge (.350 / .462) can play adequate defense and signed Jose Cruz Jr. (.345 / .427) to platoon with him. Other options are Paul McAnulty (.348/ .463 PECOTA, but a 1B by trade with almost no experience in LF), Russ Branyan (.329 / .475 but no gazelle), and Jack Cust (.386 / .454 PECOTA, but Jack Cust). They even non-tendered a RHB, Jon Knott (estimated .370 / .542 MLE vs. LHP) who fit the same description. May still be interested in Adam Dunn or Pat Burrell as an ugrade there. Signed baby bro Marcus Giles (.361 / .436) to play 2B, relegating Todd Walker (.349 / .423), who accepted arbitration, to a utility role. |
| San Francisco Giants | Signed Dave Roberts (.346 / .356) to play CF, which means Randy Winn (.346 / .426) plays RF. Re-signed LF Barry Bonds (.495 / .612), relegating Todd Linden (.338 / .416) to 4th OF. Signed Rich Aurilia (.333 / .444) and Ryan Klesko (.373 / .457) to play 1B, with Aurilia apparently penciled in as the regular. Re-signed 2B Ray Durham (.357 / .461) and 3B Pedro Feliz (.285 / .427). Signed C Bengie Molina (.314 / .424) as an upgrade to Eliezer Alfonzo (.302 / .433). |
